My god... I may be on a learner license but does every freaking Joe Blow have to get their car right up my ass!? I mean.. one of them even had the guts to honk at me... I'm going the damn speed limit mate! So I tried a little experiment... As illegal as it seems, I'm sorry if I violate the AUP, But I sped up 10 km/h above the speed limit (Which was 50 Km/h) and not to my surprise, the guy got even closer! What the ****.... :grumpy: :grumpy: :grumpy:

To the mods, the time length of the speeding was roughly 3 seconds, and I did it in an empty area near a paddock. I will never do that crap again. But I was SERIOUSLY pissed off... :grumpy: 👎 👎
 
yeah, im not looking foward to putting up with that **** when i become a learner driver (matter weeks now). Did you have L plate/sticker on?
 
I used to tailgate, if the car in front of me was either:

1. Going way under the speed limit.
2. Going the speed limit, but in the fast(passing) lane.

Once in a while, I'd still tailgate if I was in a hurry and car in front of me was doing 25mph on a 35mph.

In your case, you were driving at the posted speed, so it should been fine.

Its normal dont worry, you get some pricks on the road. It was like that when i was on my Ls and with your Ps its not as bad but u still get them here and there.

There's an old asian guy in a old corolla that uses my street as his driving course. It's very damn irritating, but I thought it would be kinda fun to mess around with the drivers cuz I knew none of them could drive including the instructor. I never did do it and I'd prefer to stay as FAR away from them as possible. In the case of you being a "noob" especially if your displaying it externally I'd get away from you as fast as possible.

Sad thing for me is the driving instructor I had was a moron... I knew more than he did (I'm not showing the size of my ego either). Never was that enthusiastic about getting my license but after driving a stick (learned that on my own) and going to Skip barber driving is always fun and I'm always practicing like it's a race. When I say race I don't mean speed either, I mean strategy, planning and technique.
 
If your doing the speed limit and some prick decides to tailgate, just gradually reduce your speed, If you speed up they will speed up and continue to tailgate.

:lol: I can see what you mean, but having prejudice against someone wearing an "L" plate isn't exactly good. How do you know they haven't had it for a year or more? The minimum length is 6 months, and I'm just about finished the six months...

I don't know what your driving tests are like there but from experience they might as well give the person a license when they get to the DMV office instead of wasting time and money testing people. Hell I'd let blind people get a license too it's such a joke.

On my test there was no freeway, no parallel parking, just a 3 point turn and a ride around the block. I don't know how different it is now but it's safe to say I'm not gonna take any chances around people especially people with an "L".

I'm sure Germany has the best testing since they have the autobahn but I'd be willing to bet anything they know how to drive when they get there license. When I say this I mean they know their car, it's capabilities and it's limitations at least enough to defensively drive safely.

Here people don't know jack and you wanna know why?? People drive blind, they get up to an incident and by the time they have needed to make a decision and execute it it's too late and instead panic and go oh ****. That's why you hear a lot of "all of a sudden" or "I don't know what happened". :dopey:

If someones doing it at higher speeds, I find a good way is to very gently dab the break pedal with your left foot while keeping the accelerator on. This way you loose no speed but your breaklights come on and all of a sudden nobody is on your arse any more. Also you could try the blind em with your windscreen washer. Although I managed that by accident once because at higher speed a fair bit flys off the top of the car, if there is another car very near you it hits their windscreen. Although I wouldnt reccomend that seeing as it stops the other driver from seeing things for a few seconds.
 
Instead of frustrating yourself and other drivers, you should pull over and let the faster vehicles pass.
 
Playing with tailergaters needs a high degree of circumspection. There is little point ticking someone off if there is a set of lights a few hundred meters down the road where you both going to stop at.

Personally, if a tailergater attaches himself to me, I ask two things. Am i in the wrong (i.e. going "slowly" in the fast lane) and secondly, is this guy a plonker. If i am in the wrong I will change lanes as as soon as safe to do. If he is in the wrong, I will take cognisance of my location regarding traffic lights etc, and if all is good I will either ease off the gas, or prod my brake (👍 for towbars).

If that doesnt work, I will just drive at my own pace and ignore the other driver.

On the other hand, should i happen across someone doing 40kph in the fast lane, a liberal dose of brights/flashing brights will be measured to convey my disapproval. I wont tailgate as if there is a bumperbashing, its the guy at the rear that gets nailed by insurance. :D

No seriously, i dont tailgate because it doesnt do much other then heighten everyones risk.

too bad if the tailgater is a motobike, and you turn on your windscreen wipers.

If they are working you up lots you should just let them pass, espicailly if your learning and arnt as confident. Its just not worth the hassel

Oh yeah, sure if there is some nutter driving an M3 at about 100mph coming up behind you and your doing about 70 on a clear road i'll get out the way, which happened this morning. Allot of the time tailgating happens when the road is chocked full of cars all going the same speed. Then you get one guy who thinks he'll be able to get everyone in the fast lane to get out of the way by tailgating them, also pulling into a slower lane would mean waiting for a gap in the packed slower lane making the traffic behind slow even more. Sometimes people don't have a clue about traffic flow, if the road is packed with cars the speed is going to be reduced.

That was an unintentional thing though, I was just trying to get that de-icing salt stuff off my windscreen.
 
In Canada we treat the so-called "passing lane" a little differently. Most people use it as a "fast driving lane." The highway speed limits are usually 100kh/m so the speed in the left-hand lane is an unstated but understood 120 km/h (anyone from Canada feel free to back me up). So if I'm driving in the left lane and in front of me is someone doing 120 and I'm doing 120, we're both doing as we should be doing. Then I'll see some jackass in the rearview mirror weaving in and out of highway traffic and trying to find the secret route to get through it all, and all of a sudden he's right on my ass. So I'll slow down to about 105 or so, enough so he'll make a move to pass me on the right. Then I'll speed up rapidly so he gets caught and hopefully can't get back behind me because there's already another car there. This works incredibly well with my mother's 300C.

In other words, tailgaters are on a level at par with child molestors and people who rape and murder senior citizens in my opinion. There is NO reason and NO excuse to EVER tailgate someone; it is one of the unsafest acts you can commit on the road, especially at highway speeds. If you're behind someone who's going too slow for you, you should stay a safe distance back (the two-second rule is the bare MINIMUM at speeds approaching 100km/h) and flash your highbeams ONCE QUICKLY. If this doesn't get the driver's attention, try to safely pass from the roght. If you're not being a total a-hole most people will let this happen.
 
I cant stand tail gaters either. Especially the ones who flash their high beams on and off behind me. Big Mistake. I have several ways of dealing with them.
First I also check to see if mabey I am going too slow, which I never am. I give them the chance to pass me by pulling my car over to the right lane a little more. This shows them that I am giving them the chance to pass. If they still continue to be a prick I do 1 of 2 things.
(polite way) First I gradually slow down more and more and more until im about 10MPH under the speed limit.
(inpolite way) Now if they catch me on a bad day and tailgate me. I just pull the parking brake that way they dont see brake lights. Or if im driving a car with a manual transmission I simply put the tranny in a lower gear and dump the clutch slowing the car down dramatically. If they hit me its their fault and they will pay for the damage. Thats pretty much the case anywhere. IF YOU ARE REAR ENDED THEY ARE LIABLE FOR THE DAMAGE. :D
There are other ways but I dont want to mention them in this site since there are so many young drivers.
 
If people tailgate me I tend to either just ignore them or randomly hit the brakes. And when people tailgate me I know they're speeding because I have a tendency to drive about 5mph over the posted limit.

I once had a state trooper tailgate me for 4 miles on the interstate even though the lanes beside me were open and safe for passing.

I guess my whole philosophy on tailgating comes from the fact that I want a new rear bumper because it is really faded red (aka pink) and the rest of my car is actually red. And if someone wrecks my bumper b/c of tailgating it goes on their insurance bill :D.
 
The best thing to do if you are being tailgated is to buy a truck and put it on airbags. When someone tailgates you let the air our and drag, letting a shower of sparks go all over the offender.

A guy in my car club did that to some rice who was tailgating him and melted little holes in the guys body kit. He got a ticket for vandilism or something but I thought it was funny.

But in all seriousness the best thing to do is tap the brakes and if that doesn't work just pull over and let em by.
 
I have a friend that actually got a ticket for tailgating on the interstate. What blows me away is that she rarely speeds - she just has a habbit of driving about two feet off the bumper in front of her. Really bizzar.

Police often tailgate drivers to intimidate them into making a mistake or speeding up. It's a dispicable practice.

That's about the time I usually just take my foot off the accellerator. (:

What does "dispicable" mean? If it's something like "lamentable" I'll have to agree with you here once again.
 
It's totally and completely deplorable. It's police basically trying to dare you or scare you into comitting a Highway Traffic Act offence so they can slap you with a ticket, a fine, or both.
 
If only there were high beams on the rear of cars :p

Right. We get a lot of that as well. Everyone here has or knows a story about police tailgating... Sad.
 
I am a mean driver.

If you're going slower than I want to go and you're in front of me, I'll be on your ass. I'll ride the back of a car to the point of which I could probably spit on it. Get out of my way, please.

If someone is on my ass, I tap on my brakes a few times. If that doesn't work, I quickly slam on them, then speed up. The funnest thing to do is just go 20mph slower than you originally were. That'll get them everytime.

If I sound ignorant I'm sorry. I'm at school and bored.
 
Concept, no one wants to get out of the way of a tailgater. We'd rather piss you off until you shoot us in the face at the next red light.

"Get out of my way please?"

How about get the hell off my ass, you're endangering my life.
