Passage by Doctor Robert Miller:

Once, I attended a German shepherd that had been hit by a car. Its back had been broken and its spinal cord severed. The poor dog was paraplegic, and the owners refused to accept what had happened. They pleaded for us to ‘try.’ We explained the permanency and the hopelessness of the injury, but they kept the dog in the hospital where we fed it, and nursed it, and cleaned up after it. After a couple of weeks, the shepard’s hindquarters were quite atrophied, but the owners could not bring themselves to put him to sleep. ‘He is so alert, and his front end seems so normal,’ they rationalised. Yet they would not take him home. Somehow, they hoped that a miracle would occur, and they would come to the hospital to see their friend, and the doctor would say, ‘I have good news for you. Teddy’s paralysis is improving, and we think that he will be able to walk again.’

I found it difficult to stay in the ward when the family came to visit the dog. He whined softly to them, his eager licking and his intelligent brown eyes telling of his distress at being separated from them, of his loneliness and pain.

When Teddy’s cage was cleaned, he was transferred to a pen. He would pathetically drag his paralysed body around the pen, using his strong forelegs.

One day, while teddy was in the pen, I saw a sight that startled me and chocked me with emotion. Teddy was standing on his forelimbs. His paralysed, withered hind end dangled uselessly, and he balanced, standing, on his forelegs. By the next day, Teddy was walking. He balanced on his forearms and walked around the pen.
The brave dog’s family came to see him. They silently watched their pet lift himself up and walk to them, his paralysed rear half swinging from side to side.
‘That’s disgusting,’ said the man.
‘Horrible!’ said the wife.
‘Let’s put him to sleep. I can’t stand to watch that.’

"Horrible?" "Disgusting?"

Yeah, the fact they left their dog there in pain and lonely. What idiots. That dog sounds like a fighter. Go doggie.

What the hell??? Ill put them to sleep

A Family friend of mine had a dog that lost the use of it's hind legs (I don't remember how or why). It was quite sad to see. I think she's been doing better lately thankfully.

As a life-long dog lover, my reaction to the first paragraph was "Put the poor dog down." Then as I continued to read, I was thinking, "This is an awesome dog." Then the last paragraph rears it's ugly head. Absolutely incredible.

I would also like to second "Go doggie."

I pray they didnt put it to sleep. Those people sicken me. The poor animal fought for its life and found a way to get around on his own again. What happened was the closest thing to the miracle they wanted, and at the sight of it they scoff, "Ok put him to sleep" Those people don't deserve a pet.

(Wow, every other word in that post looks misspelt to me. Am I losing my mind or my ability to form words?)

I cut and pasted the passage from an email that I received from the UK. It is important to remember that American English and spellings differ from Australian and British English.

Eg:
Rationalized= rationalised.

The transcriber has however misspelled or mistyped the word shepherd’s.

I was talking about My post. :scared: hang on I'll be back, there goes my mind. "hey get back here you little"

Its so sad.
Since your story doesn't tell whether the dog lives or dies, I'll just say he lived and lived happily ever after with a family that cares about him today.

I am well aware of your errors. I’m lucky however that I didn’t begin a jingoistic rant on the shortcomings of American English.

That is sad. People like that shouldn't be allowed to own a dog. If I had been the vet treating that animal I would've done someting violent to those people...

Now I'm depressed...I'm going to go appreciate my dog now just in case

Damn man! Disgusting? Horrible? - In my ass!👎
If I had a dog with a kind of accident happened to him I would take care of him not put him to sleep.👍

What idoits, how could they say that. :( One of my dogs got hit by a car once, luckly he didn't get paralized. He had to get his front right leg amputated, his back right leg gets a bit sore now and then, but hes a happy dog still, just more lazy now, but maybe thats because hes getting old.

In my mom's case, she didn't have a choice, it was either that, or let our pet cat suffer whilst cancer ate away at his innards (he was riddled with it throughout his entire body)

What would you have done?

Dude, I'd love to see what they do if/when they have kids, if they don't already. That dog worked it's heart out and they wanted it put down! Fools...

I had a cat put down beacuse it went blind and tehn ontinued climbing, causing it to break a back leg.

I hate them people. It was clear the dog was trying hard, so the owners should look after it. It seemed it wasn't in any pain so there is no reason really to put it to sleep. :(

But thats a totaly different situation. This dog was ready and able to continue on, abeit half the dog he was before. For those people to even think about taking that away after he pulled through makes them down right evil in my book.

Are you saying that it was sick they did it after it pulled through?

In that case I do see your point there. It WAS sick. 👎

If they were going to put it down, they should have done it shortly after the accident, whilst the dog was still in pain.

Idiots. I'll Third the Go doggie. Those people are sadistic. :(  🤬 🤬

People like that shouldn't have dogs.

I have a 3 legged German Shepherd/Collie mix, who had 4 legs when we adopted her at the Shelter, but she couldn't use one of them because she got hit by a car. So, they, (the docs at the shelter) after trying to get her leg to heal 6 or 7 times, decided it would be in Millie's best Interest to amputate. She gets around fine. Everyone is ok with her having THree legs.

On the Other hand, I have had a Shih-tzu since I was 5. This dog and I are inseparable, and he is the happiest and nicest little fella you'd want to meet. 5 years ago, he came home with something in his eye, and he was moping around. Turns out, one of his eyes ruptured. The vet did a surgery, he had (the icky eye, as my neices called it) and one good one. We had to put eye drops in them though, so his eyes wouldn't get irritated. He lives happily for 5 years being half-blind. Last August, I got a call from my dad saying Barney's good eye ruptured. I get a bunch of crap from my mom, who thinks he should just be put to sleep. I said no way. The vet said that if barn had no blood or kidney problems, he could do a surgery to take out Barney's eyes that were now causing him severe pain, and if he had bad kidneys, and his blood wasn't healthy, then it would be best to put him to sleep. Thankfully, the tests said he was in perfect health, so he did the surgery. I got nothing but **** from my mom for a week about it being cruel to keep a blind dog. (her opinion on the matter was automatically void due to her trying to give my dog away without telling me)

Barn is the exact same dog he used to be. He goes up and down the stairs, Jumps in and out of the car, on and off the furniture, gets around the house and places he hadn't been to when he could see without walking into things. He sits in the same spots he used to, and still goes and terrorizes my trash can. Having a blind dog is not Cruel. I just wish some of the damn soccer moms would realize that. Pets arent supposed to be Perfect. They aren't like toys, which if something breaks, you just get a new one. They are Creatures. We wouldn't put a blind man to sleep, would we? We don't shun people for having family members missing two legs.

You know, the bottom line is: Sure, it might look funny to have a blind dog, and not be able to see its eyes or tell some of it's feelings. It might be wierd to have a dog pull itself around in a wheelchair. But when it gets down to it, these are the best pets around, because they have people that love them so much they will make accomidations to their lifestyle for a disabled pet. People that are willing to pay for surgeries, like the one in a post Loudmusic posted about a dog that had a tumor. Bottom line is, pets need love. If you can't seem to love your pet after it's been disfigured or Disabled, I am sorry. You have failed.

I'm definitely dissapointed in the owners. As many people have said, it's not the dog that's "disgusting", it's those owners. 👎

menglan: While I wouldn't blame dog owners for putting their dogs to sleep when they go blind, I think your dog is extremely lucky to have you as an owner. You are good guy. 👍

That sounds like an awesome doggy to have!

a6m5: I agree, If a dog can't adapt, and is going through hell trying to get around, then it would be in the dog's best interest to be put down.

But Barney is enjoying every minute of life. I love the little guy. he is teh shih-tzu. :dopey:

I once knew a girl who had a pet pug that lost the use of its' hind legs. She used to carry him around with his hind wrapped up in a bandana attached to a leash and she'd walk around with him, his ass suspended in the air. Ironically, the girls' name was Hope. Anyway, this little pug started doing that after about a year and it was hilarious watching that little guy walk around on his front legs, I don't know why someone would want to take that away after the dog just made a major breakthrough, considering the condition he was in. Poor thing.

Thats rediculous. I hope that poor dog survived to live a good live with some owners who actually care about him. It will be a sad day when a dog gets put to sleep after trying so hard. Albeit, seeing a hind end swing around isnt the greatest thing, but give the dog a chance to live.. Theres something you can do to help it keep from "swinging around".. Hell, i dont care, if the dog was happy with how he was and he still swung around, i'd keep him.

That really angers me.. I hope the doctor slapped them and adopted the dog himself.
