As some of you know I work at Subway. Today I worked from 12-4. It's 4 pm and I'm *just* about to leave, taking a final sip of my Sierra Mist and about to leave the employee door and walk to my car.
All of a sudden I start feeling dizzy. "This is odd," I thought. Well within 10 seconds it feels like I am walking down a steep mountain. I literally feel like I'm at a 30 degree angle to the horizontal. I lean against the employee door and immediately I have slammed it shut. Using some common sense I got myself on the ground before I could collapse.
At this point I am pretty damn scared because nothing like this has ever happened to me. I'm 18 years old and in normal great health. I have never felt so completely powerless to help myself. It was so damn sudden too, without any warning at all. I start to breathe heavily and then my fellow employees start to take notice.
Then I get the distinct feeling that I need to throw up. Great. So they walk me over to the washroom, by this time I am completely unable to walk in a straight line. I find the sink and puke. The dizziness starts to subside but I still am kinda out of it. The next two hours are spent sitting on the toilet holding onto the rail inbetween periods of puking into the sink and cleaning off my face and nostrils, trying to regain composure so I can drive myself home. The first time I threw up I started sweating profusely and I had to have them keep the door open via the garbage can for ventilation.
Thankfully my co-workers kept checking up on me and really helped me a lot, gave me water and all. Thank the Lord that this didn't occur 2 minutes later when I would have been behind the wheel of my dad's car, and I usually go kinda fast when I leave work
The strange thing is that those are my only symptoms. No headaches or loss of vision or anything else. I can't really pinpoint what caused this, either. I'm not allergic to anything. I had a roast beef sandwich for lunch, a cookie, and Sierra Mist about 2PM which is absolutely normal for me. I doubt this was food poisoning. Just about 10 minutes before I had been in and out of the freezer for 20 minutes or so loading and unloading boxes of food - but then again I don't know how it would cause me to go dizzy like that.
I drove myself home and believe me I drove that absolute slowest I ever have in my life, really took my time.
My family called the doctor and he said it's vertigo, maybe caused by some ear infection. If it recurs then I need to call them immediately. Even as I type this at 10:30 I still feel a little sick and refuse to eat anything, still a little bit off-balance.
I also incurred a $25 parking ticket for being in the space for so long.
It's so terrifying though to be in a situation where I have absolutely no control over myself!
