Whenever I watch a video clip, about a minute into it, my computer just turns off and restarts. It doesnt even shutdown, it just turns off and starts up again. Any idea what could be wrong?:indiff:

EDIT: I didn't want to make a new thread, so I just stuck the second part in here, but I'm gonna go search if someone else already asked this.

It could be a lack of memory problem. I had trouble playing videos in WMP for a while. It would freeze and/or restart. I put another 256MB in, and haven't had a problem since. Check your memory usage and see if memory is low when you've got a video playing.

or the file could be corrupted..... I had a video clip on my computer that used to do that...... click on it and the computer crashes and restarts, everytime......so i just got rid of it....

:odd: Hmmm... I believe it could be your video card or the driver that's causing it to reboot. try updating your graphic card's driver see if the solves the issue.

It's not the file, since it happens every single time I watch any video. Also, I have enough memory, so thats not the problem. It could be the graphics card, but I have to use the one already installed in the computer, when I plug the monitor into my other graphics card, the computer doesnt turn on. I will try updating it though.

Things I would try:
  • Try the same file on another computer
  • Try running your video in VLC instead of Windows media player. If that works, you could just reinstall WMP. Reinstalling it is quick, so I would try it anyways.
  • If you have 2 DIMMs (memory modules), I'd try with only one of them at a time, to see if one of them is malfunctioning.
  • Trying another video card is indeed a good idea.
  • Make sure your Motherboard BIOS is the latest version.
  • Perhaps try to boot in safe mode, to see if it does the same (not 100% sure wmp works in safe mode, it should)
If none of this works (and the file play fine on another pc) It could be:

  • OS corruption (lots of possible causes)
  • Hardware defect, most likely the motherboard / cpu (that would surprise me a lot though, especially if it only happens by playing that file)
Hope that helps

Thanks everyone, I rebooted my system, but now for soem reason my hard drive only has 2gb of space. I know I have to partition my drive or something like that, but I don't know how. I know theres some programs that can do it, but they cost money. Theres also another way to do it using msdos I think, but due to my lack of computer knowledge, I don't know how. Can anyone help me out?

Correct me if im wrong but the windows xp disk can do that for you, but is that only when you are fresh installing the os?

Do you mean 2 GB of free space or 2 GB of total space?

If it's the latter and you're 100% sure it wasn't like that before, you have serious issues with your system (and I'm quite surprised that a corrupted partition would be accessible like that). I'd back up all my documents ASAP and do a fresh installation. If it's an hardware issue (more than likely), it'll probably happen again. If that's the case, then you should take your pc where you bought it so they can pinpoint which hardware is faulty, they're better equipped than you are to do so, unless you have a lot of spare parts to do swap.

If your partition was originally created that size and you want to resize it without reinstalling windows, I'd suggest getting a software like Partition Magic to do the job.

Well, problem solved. I put in my windows 98 setup cd, and when the choice came up if I want to install windows, I typed in fdisk, and I deleted my old partitions and made a new one, and then formatted my drive. Then I reinstalled windows again, and now everything is great, thanks for the help everyone. 👍

Well, this sucks, I reinstalled windows, and my computer still restarts after watching any video clip for a while. I think it might be the graphics card, but it doesnt show up in the device manager, and when I plug my own in, it thinks I'm running a 2 monitor setup. When I just try plugging my monitor into my other card, the monitor doesnt turn on.

My computer used to always restart out of the blue and start itself when it was turned off. I had it restart once as you said, PB, but never had it restart while playing a video clip. Reinstalling system works, as you have tried.

I strongly suggest installing windows 2000 or XP instead of 98, unless it's a dinosaur. They're both much more stable, and it will better handle faulty hardware.

Sounds like you have got a damaged Graphics card, When I first got my pc, the guys who built it knocked off on of the transsistors on the Graphics card, windows loaded up fine, but when i watched vids or played games it just reset itself, dose it do the same for games? if so that could be the problem.

I think it's the graphics card too, and I have another one, but the monitor doesnt even turn on with the other one. so I can't get a driver for it or anything, since I can't use the computer at the same time.

Ok, I changed my graphics card, and for some reason it worked this time. Nothing has happened yet, but I think the problem might be solved, since everytime I would turn on the computer with the old card, I would get corrupt file warnings, and this time it didn't. I'll keep it updated though.

EDIT: I am running Windows XP
