This is one of the saddest, yet most amusing sights we've ever seen. A $1.6 million Bugatti Veyron sitting in a salt water lagoon, door open, in two feet of nasty, corrosion-inducing muddy water. While the sight is sad, how the event allegedly transpired is downright hilarious. The unnamed owner of the vehicle, traveling through Galveston, Texas to look at some high-end property, was reportedly talking on his cell phone when a low-flying pelican distracted him. The driver swerved to avoid the big bird, dropped his cell phone, and in the process the front passenger tire hit a mud patch.

A quad-turbo, 16-cylinder engine may be able to get you to 60 mph in under three seconds, but it doesn't work well with mud, so the supercar made a b-line for an adjacent lagoon. The ultra rare Veyron (reportedly one of 15 copies here in the States) was still running after it rested nearly belt-line high in the salt water, as local news affiliate KHOU reported the 1,000+ hp engine "gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died." It probably would have been a great idea to kill power to the engine (and even shut the door) once the Veyron hit the muck, but hey, what do we know?

Hit the jump to watch video of the Veyron as it is extracted from its salty abyss. And if you own a Veyron, let this be a lesson to you that having money doesn't necessarily mean you have the skill to drive a supercar, especially when you're on the phone. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

HAHA wow. I dont know whether i should laugh or feel sorry for the guy

Love how he washed his hands in the muddy water to touch the steering wheel.

Ugh. what a pillock. More money than brains, I guess...shouldn't have been on the damn Cell! Now your Veyron is waterlogged...

Warning to rich people: If a Veyron comes up on the market for less than $500,000, it's probably been flooded.

Haha, damn that sucks for him. Would've been cheaper just to repair whatever damage an impact with a pelican might've caused.

Do insurance pay out if he's already admitted he was on a mobile phone? Ooh, that's gonna hit the bank balance hard.

I think if he can afford a Veyron, repairing the car won't be a problem. He just might not be able to afford that property he was going to look at.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that violates the basic Veyron math equation...

Veyron + cell phone + heavy foot = car with a jesus complex...

I would guess yes, actually.

Not if it's illegal to talk on a cellphone while driving and considering, that's breaking the law and insurance would void you in a split second, especially for a Veyron!

After checking the Texas laws from two sites (http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/laws/cellphone_laws.html & http://www.iihs.org/laws/cellphonelaws.aspx), he is lucky as it's only illegal to use cellphones in Texas in school crossing zones or intermediate drivers for the first twelve months which I doubt he is....his driving skill might equal an intermediate driver though. :p

I would LOVE to see how much his premiums would rise the next time he tries to insure an exotic supercar/hypercar. :trouble:

Y'know, I have a quick little parody for it...

---------

"You say Veyron didn't want to take the road through the aviary and drove into a pond? Well, we'll have GT-R take that drive. Oh, and Veyron? We'll have to leave him there."

Some boys were walking to school, and stopped to look. "Doesnt' he look silly," they said, "They'll never get him out."

They began to sing,

"'Silly old Veyron fell in a pond
fell in a pond
fell in a pond
Silly old Veyron fell in a pond
all on a monday morning'"

"Pshaaaw," snorted Veyron, and blew away three tadpoles, and an inquisitive newt.

((loosely adapted from Rev. W. Awdry's story, "Off the Rails"))

My suspicion is that the guy couldn't actually afford it and did it on purpose for insurance. I mean come on, a pelican AND a cell phone? Plus leaving it running underwater for 15 minutes to guarantee it would be a writeoff?

You'd have thought the ECU on an engine as complex as a quad turbo W16 would have an automatic cutout sensor when faced with such conditions. :odd:

I agree ...... I can't think of a single reason why anyone would leave any car running in that situation, even for a minute. It serves no purpose other than to ensure the engine internals get a salt water bath or hydraulic locking of the cylinders occurs.

I'm also at a loss to explain how any car CAN run with the exhausts below water as such. The increased back pressure would shut off most engines that I know of within a minute or two ??

No, outboard boat motors nearly all exhaust under water, and many inboard light craft also. They use the water as a muffler, basically. The exhaust just bubbles to the top.

Wait, he left the engine running underwater? :| But wouldn't the induction system suck water into the cylinders and hydrolock it within seconds? Crazy.

Wouldn't he be better off just selling it?

I posted that thread, but it got locked. I thought I was first!

You were actually the third.

Accidents happen, unfortunately this time it was a Veyron. I feel bad for the guy, makes one mistake and loses his million+ dollar car in a stupid accident. Not only that but he gets to be on the news and have people all over the world mock him. Its not like hes the only one who has been in an accident.

Hard to believe someone in a city of 30K+ population owns one of the Veyron's. But at least, I'm proud he's from my town.

I just read the best part (from Channel 11 here in Houston, and the Houston Chronicle): The owner is a fellow named Andy House, who lives near Lufkin in east Texas, and the kicker is that he makes his living (apparently a pretty good one, if he can afford a Veyron) *restoring damaged exotic cars for re-sale*! :-O Must be karma (make that "car-ma"); at least he's in the right business --- he just became "his own best client" LOL!

so you drive into a lake and your going to hang around in the car to turn off the engine not knowing how deep it is......seriously?

any person with sense would just get out the thing as fast as they can not careing wether the engine is on or not.

They just released the photo of the guy.

Supposedly he didn't shut the engine off because he was to busy shooting his guns.
