What makes a car a chick car? A lot of things. Mostly brand and how it looks. But I have figured out a way to tell for certain whether a car is a chick car or a guy car: which side of the car the gas filling thingy is on. If it's on the driver's side, it's a guy car. If it's on the passenger side, it's a chick car and if it's under the rear license plate, then it can go both ways. But my reasoning is, the only reason why the gas fill thing would be on the passenger side is so that the man can get out and fill up the car for his wife or girlfriend or whatever, which means it's marketed to women, and thus, a chick car.

Take my 1992 Pontiac Sunbird SE for example. It's got a cute, girly name, and it's gas tank is on the passenger side, and thus it's a chick car. I don't mind though, it gets me from one point to another, and I still plan on fixing it up.

However, take the Dodge Viper and most supercars. They all have their gas filler thingys on the driver's side because they're guy cars.

Any thoughts on this?

Our Accord Type-R has the filler on the passenger side. Our BMW E39 Touring has it on the driver's side, but only because it's a right-hand drive version of a left-hand drive car - in its native territory, it also has the filler on the passenger side.

I'm pretty sure that neither are "chick" cars.

Honda's pretty much ARE chick cars. The Civic, S2000 and NSX are excluded, but still. BMW's and Mercs I think can go either way. And with imports it's hard to call 'cause I don't think they swap the filler when they ship 'em state side...if they do. So...Same with Porsche. Although, I know more women who own Mercs and Porsches than guys.

I just want to double check that you think this:

is a "chick car", but this:

is not.

The Accord Type-R is not a chick car.

The Baron is not impressed at being told he "can go either way".

Firstly, it'd require a redesign of much of the back end of the car so no, they don't. Second, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche are all German - the cars are LHD in their native market and LHD in yours - so they'd have no reason to.

Incidentally, which side is the filler on the Dodge Viper again?

Therefore your logic is wrong.

My 911: Petrol cap is right in front of the steering wheel, on the left of the car, in a US (and thus German spec model) therefore undoubtably a guy car because the fuel nozzle goes in on the driver's side. It has no power steering despite 205 front tyres, a clutch that requires the calves of Hercules to operate with any finesse and a gearbox throw that should be an olympic event in itself. My wife has driven it 4 times in the 3 years we've owned it and is "unimpressed". A definite, shadow-of-doubt-free non-chick car.

My NA Miata: Petrol cap is directly behind the driver on the left rear wing, therefore undoubtably a guy car because the fuel nozzle goes in on the driver's side.

I figure you'll get 1000s of guys that claim the Miata is a chick car, but then 85% of them are under driving age and have never driven one or have a father that works for GM/Crumpler/Ford that can't accept that a low HP lightweight car can possibly be fun for everyone. :p 0.0001% of these people will ever go on to drive the Lamborarri that they're currently having wet dreams over to prove their point, and of those about 75% will crash their Lamborarri's bassackwards through a hedge within the first 5 minutes because they never bothered to learn basic driving techniques in a low powered "chick" car like a Miata! :sly:

It's an absolute delight to drive, the most fun and chuckable thing I've ever driven, and I include the 911 in that equation. My wife loves it, given the choice of the 911, the slushmatic Chrysler and the manual Miata, she'll take the Miata every single time.

My Chrysler Sebring Touring Sedan has the gas cap on the driver's side. Of the 3 cars I own it's the most detestable heap of 🤬 ever, has the least smooth automatic gearbox ever invented and is generally awful. If ever there was a "chick" car, this is it, you don't have to do anything to drive this car, it has power steering, is sluggish, has a stop & a go pedal and 10000 mirrors to do your makeup in while driving. If I wasn't paid to drive it, (and actually technically I don't "own" it, some Mid-Western Schmuck of a leasing company is paying to take the diabolical losses on it instead) I wouldn't.
Though by your logic, it's a definite guy-mobile.

Last time I checked a brutish V8 Falcon or rapid turbo 6 are not chick cars, both have fuel fillers on the passenger side and are only sold in one market, Australia, meaning they're all RHD.

My RX8 has the filler on the passenger side. Now you may say this is a 'chick car' but in reality, my wife is scared to drive it - especially in the wet - as it is a typically skittish light, rwd car with a fair amount of HP. Surely you can't have a chick car that chicks are afraid to drive?

With one exception(Which I will get to), I can't think of any cars that are really "Chick cars". Sure there are some that have that perception, but nothing about the car itself makes is a chick car, it's about the drivers(sort of like the whole "rednecks and pickups" thing).

As for the gas cap theory, they are typically placed on the opposite side of the exhaust on single exhaust cars, for dual exhaust cars it's merely a coin flip. So it really has nothing to do with marketing, or anything for that matter.

Oh, and the exception to the rule is this.

I have never seen a male driving one.

the location of the fuel filler definetly has nothing to do with it being a chick car. I'm currently running a minivan with a driver's side filler. i think it's more a manufacturers' thing. chrysler puts them on the left for the most part.

@SuperShouden
The Rt/10,GTS,and SRT10 vipers all have them on the passenger side.

On the Topic of the fuel fillers and what side its on, that has nothing to do with the what side males and females drive on.

My Rx7: passenger, Eclipse: Driver,Buick:driver. I think its whatever side they feel like it as some I know that the Pontiac Grand am has it on the passenger side too.

For the most part I think you can identify a chick car by the simple fact that "chicks" in general will say its CUTE!

Some Examples are
The Mazda Miata.
The Chevrolet Cobalt(somehow my GF gets all kinds of comments on how nice/cute her car is)
The VW BEETLE(fuel filler on the passenger side)

Maybe cars with the filler cap on the passenger side could be classified as 'pimp cars'. A pimp never fuels his own car, he has a b**ch to do that for him.

Or "normal cars" - if your filler cap is next to a fuel pump, getting out the driver's door can prove tricky. Typically cars have the filler cap on the passenger side for the country in which the original car was developed.

I don't want to go off topic but, dayum, that that thing looks awesome. I'd be really pissed if Alan Mullaly. had one of those.

On topic, I really don't care were the nozzle goes. As long as fuel goes in the tank. Or in my case, straight from the tank into the engine, then I have to stop and buy more because its a binge drinker.

Here in midwest America, the ultimate girls' car is a Pontiac Grand Am, unquestionably.

When you pass one of these later-model Grand Ams, often red, sedan or coupe, there is honestly about a 70% chance that a young female will be driving it, and at least 50% of those girls will be moderately attractive and above. I personally know or have known six hot chicks that drive these Grand Ams. One of them has a previous-generation GT coupe with a 5-speed. That's a bad chick lol.

Does anyone have a real explanation for why the fuel port changes sides? There are two main factors that come to mind. One is that it's always more convenient on the driver's side. Most of the time my wife is driving her car I'm not in it. And most of the time I'm driving my car she's not in it. So we do a lot of pumping gas alone - which means the driver's side is more convenient either way.

That being said, a car with long doors might be easier to fill up on the passenger side so as not to whack the gas pump with a long door. You can get closer to the hose if it's on the passenger side. Yet my RSX - which had fairly long doors had the fuel port on the driver's side.

hmm....I think my logic mostly works with American cars, with the exception of the Vipers. But there's probably a reason why they did that...most like so that every time you get out to fill up with gas, you have walk around your car and admire it's curves. That and the doors on that thing are massive. You wouldn't be able to get out to fill up on gas if the filler was on the driver's side.

It is true that the Civic, S2000 and Miata are also technically chick cars. (Miata is 'cause it's small...it's the chihuahua of cars.) And most of the guys who drive the other two tune them up with the thought that "this thing can beat anything." But it's not true. And I know Kaz owns an S2000, but I think it's his wife's car.

Wouldn't they want the shortest path to the gas tank? How do they decide where the gas tank goes...I don't know. I always thought it would be an engineering reason like weight distribution, safety or wherever there is space left.

Why? What makes these cars chicks cars? What does being small have to do with being a chick car? This thread is a laugh. Are you being serious?

^Chick car, by your logic.

The old Challenger kinda was. It was a "cute" muscle car. :P And you could get Mopars in purple and pink.

But, Miata is a chick car. I don't know of a guy who actually owns an S2000, and any guys I know of that own a Civic, either aren't the brightest bulbs in the tree or use it for illegal street racing.

I don't see a typical woman's car among these. I guess there has to be a reason for the placing of the filler. But probably not the estimated ratio of female buyers...

I expect to see a thread talking about V6 Mustangs and Sunfire convertibles and instead I see fuel filler neck discussion?
:odd:

I will find out for you.

However it's worth noting that in almost all cases of platform sharing and multiple-market cars, the passenger side of the original vehicle's original market is the one with the filler cap. This isn't necessarily always the case - the Corvette springs to mind as an exception, as does the Elise - but it is the most common.

I don't think your... err... "logic" works at all. The new Camaro, for instance, is a right-hand filler.

Funnily, most MX-5s and Civics are completely standard. Having been in the presence of 650 MX-5s from around the UK at once with no more than five of them with any kind of engine modifications I can say that saying "most" people who drive these cars don't "tune them up" at all.

And how does tuning a car up make it a chick's car anyway? Seriously?

That just sounds like you trying to justify your spur of the moment "chick car" criteria.

Well that's strange, I actually don't know any girls who own an S2000 or a Miata, and plenty of men who do.

EDIT: Oh, and the avatar doesn't surprise me.
