no buy one, with a little help from people on here you'll get it dialed in fast. i hated mine out of the box but a quick force feedback adjustment and i'm loving it.
i have had mine out the box twice due to heavy work load at the mo (12hrs a day, 7 days a week!).. have power assist off and ffb at 5... what setting do other people use??

Sorry Jeff .. I should have made myself a little clearer. The Simulation, Power Assist, and Force Feedback settings are changed in the Options Menu accessible from the GT Life screen.
As for the "Greyed Out" settings I think you are referring to the RA button on the DFGT. The issue of changing Driving Assists on the fly was corrected with update 1.06. Now you can change these settings on the fly in events where they are not restricted.
I never adjusted anything at all on my DFGT. I just mounted it to a desk, plugged it in, and played. So, installation time was however long it took to get it out of the box, mount it, and plug it in.
