Backup gone wrong.....

Yesterday I was a lvl-37 in a-spec and lvl-40 in b-spec. I was 95% complete with the game and I had just under 20mil in cash. I decided I better back my save file up. I'm not sure what went wrong but the ambiguous save routine has now put me back to lvl-34 a-spec, lvl-39 b-spec, 88% completion, and 15.9 mil in cash.

Pretty disheartening losing about a weeks worth of play along with 20+ cars I'd purchased last week some of which I was happy to have found in the UCD.

I know it's my own fault because I should've been more sure of myself in how I perform my backups and more diligent too. But would it have been that hard on Sony's part to give me some options that said "Back Up Save File" and "Restore Save File"? They give you 3 options, Copy, Delete, and Information.

I'm still not sure exactly how it happened but I know I thought I was backing up to USB stick. I selected my USB drive and it said there was already a file on it and asked me if I wanted to overwrite? So I said yes. Next thing I know I loaded thet game back up and I'm a week behind.

What do you suppose happened?

Maybe you copied it from your USB onto your PS3, not your PS3 onto your USB.

You are probably right. I was so pissed last night. I was really glad to be done with b-spec but one of the worst things now is that I will have to rerun at least 2 more 24 hr races and maybe 3 just to get back to level 40. I have a fat playstation and I always hated the thought of letting that beast run for 24 hours straight.

That's exactly what happened - you selected the save file located on the USB and copied that to the PS3, overwriting the one already on the PS3. You restored an old backup instead of backing up your save.

That same thing happened to me some weeks ago. Copied from USB to PS3, but only 1 day lost in my case. :scared:

I always triple-check I'm copying the save data the right direction. I think it also helps if you backup to do so frequently, that way if you inadvertently restore a backup instead of saving it, you don't lose that much progress.

It could be much worse. I was about where you were and screwed up and lost it all a little over a month ago. I always keep 2 backups now. :D

It's easily done, but like has been said could have been a lot worse. I always triple check what I am doing when backing up/restoring, not worth losing it all for that bit of extra attention.

That's why I typically move the save file onto my computer and then erase it from the flash drive. You can't overwrite the save if there's nothing to overwrite with.

Well if it is the case you've gone back a week, at least you'll be able to get your cars and money back. They should appear again at the same times. Its just a pain that you have to do all the racing and whatever again.

At least you didn't delete your whole file.

There are a few cars I purchased during that stetch that I regret so that is one thing I can look at as a positive. The 24 hours races kill me though. I'm convinced my PS3 will start smoking and end up with a YLOD :(

The other positive is that my Level 24 ticket was another darn FGT car so maybe next time I'll get the F2007 or F10.

Your PS3 won't overheat if you don't abuse it. And I don't mean 24 hour game sessions, I mean putting it in a place where it can't ventilate enough.

I have one of the original fat models and it's lasted this whole time. You'll notice that the left side of the PS3 doesn't have your vents, but the right and back sides do. Turn your PS3 so that the left side without vents is pointed to the wall, rather than the back. Also make sure your room remains ventilated itself (opening a window is a perfect way to do that, especially if you're not into the Summer heat yet).

I guarantee you that anyone who's had a PS3 overheat on them more than likely had one of the vents fairly well blocked, even if they didn't realize it.

EDIT: Lucky you on the ticket - mine was a Tony Stewart NASCAR. Wouldn't have been so bad if that wasn't what I had gotten from the NASCAR Special Event.

You didn't get the Tony Stewert car from a level 24 ticket. All of the Nascars are level 21 cars. As far as I can tell there are only 3 level 24 cars in the entire game......F2007, F10, and FGT.

So I'm planning on starting to backup my save file. I will be sure to back up after every endurance race and before I shut off the PS for the night so that way if I pull this move and copy from the USB to the PS, I won't be that far behind, if at all.
