Perhaps we should just get a tuning shop class running in a lounge once or a week or something might be a better idea. Work on different aspects of tuning before and after the workshop hour(s), then bring it altogether with an online free run workshop with the same car and restrictions in place. Each apprentice can show off what they have learned by demo driving their car and getting feedback and advice on their settings from a different tuner willing to host each workshop.

I like the idea of the online lobby, but you'll have to explain it a bit more, I didn't quite get your concept?

My concept is open for loose interpretation. The idea is to get a few volunteers from the tuning garages to volunteer to host a workshop every other week or once a month. The host could choose the car and restrictions, then provide some loose guidelines restricting tires and performance points, idea to provide a format for a semi-guided tune that is open for each individual to put their personal flare on the car, but can provide each other with help, and the host could review and test cars by request when shared online. Most of this discussion would be forum based, but at the end of each workshop there would be a wrap up party for the workshop to get all apprentices in an online lobby and race each other with your own tunes, provide final feedback, etc... but not to be scored like a competition.

I get it now. I certainly like the idea. Now we just have to get someone to host said lobby/"competition".

I like that plan budious. 👍 Two or three tuners together with a group of apprentices showing them different areas of tuning and the apprentices getting different views of how tuners get their results. :)

Maybe I should make it clear that if anyone is willing to take on apprentices they should post here? =P

Let's start the second use of this thread: I'm looking for someone who might be interested in starting up a tune workshop with me. Anyone interested?

I am willing to help out over an extended period but I don't want to make any hard commitments for particular dates or tightly scheduled workshops.

The problem is that most of these people are keyboard tuners, and guessing the right parameters. I once had ideas of actually use mathematics and physics to count the settings, but nobody was intrested.

That's just like me then xD I'll send you a PSN FR. Maybe PM me a tune that I can test? Preferably something that already in my garage (see sig).

There are a lot of people here who do that, but have zilch to show for it. The game doesn't actually use real auto tuning formulas in most cases, a few things, yes. The rest is poorly imitated. That's not to say you can't reverse the game engine tuning algorithm which is the approach I have taken, and have some good results to show for it. I just really haven't made the whole picture public yet because there a few pieces to the puzzle left to fit, and then it alone over covers suspension rates, dampers, and anti-roll bars as they formulate to each other. Simply fitting one variable into one sub equation doesn't change the fact it also goes in another so accounting for a change to one subsystem needs to be tracked back to another.

Things that probably do use real formulas or similar to:
  • Transmission - Gear Ratios
  • Weight Transfer

Things that probably don't:
  • Suspension
  • Differential
  • Aerodynamics
  • ... everything else that's not on the first list.

Another idea that I had a while back is that one of the primary reasons people pass over tunes or give them a negative review is that they are never specific enough for the tracks they want to use. I was considering adopting an open or test driver policy that would allow contributors who run my tunes and find minor adjustments which can made to suite their specific driving style, a specific course, or a specific weather condition on a course to submit their modifications to my base tunes, and they would receive a contributing junior tuner credit. "The following submitted by... your name here." etc. would be added to each post respectively after I had evaluated your suggested change and liked it with or without a few tweaks to your tweak of my own. Donors providing frequently accepted tweaks would be eligible for tuning requests in return, as well as build their own reputation.

Aerodynamics probably do to a certain extent. MAYBE Differential too.

I suspect if it did, then the basic form of the aerodynamics input is probably X KG downforce when Y KM speed is achieved.

Yeah. And for differential, something like turning at X angle at Y speed gives Z traction... Or something, I'm no maths genius =/

I am willing to test anyone's tunes who needs a driver. I have been driving Gran Turismo since #1, and bought the logitech driving force pro for GT4's release. I learned how to tune cars on GT3 but forgot since then but now I want to get back into tuning or adjusting posted setups to match my driving style. (everything off abs=1) msg me on PSN ID= ELBILLO1 if you want/need help. I would also be interested in a tuning room where we meet up to learn & share.

Since I posted this in another tuning help thread, here would be an example of the type of exercise I would have in mind for a tuning workshop plan.

You want a tuning assignment to help you learn a bit about suspension? Let's take a car that drives considerably well on its stock suspension, say go purchase the Ferrari 458 Italia, then purchase some Sport Soft tires and the Fully Customizable Suspension and nothing else for the time being.

First, reequip the stock suspension and drive a few laps on a track you are interested in tuning for. Note any qualities you like or dislike about the car. Next, reequip the full custom suspension and drive a few laps and note any qualities you like or dislike. Now, copy over the spring rates from the stock suspension to the full custom suspension and set all the dampers and stabilizers to 1s, leave the default camber if any but zero out the rear toe. Drive a few more laps and note the handling, it should be identical to the stock suspension (or actually leave the stock toe to really re-achieve the stock feel), but now you have a baseline to start tuning your custom suspension.

The idea here is that for the stock weight at the stock ride height of the car, the stock spring rates are fairly decent (6.2 FR / 7.0 RR - if I recall correctly). Your tuning assignment is to not adjust ride height or spring rates, but only to make adjustments to dampers and stabilizers and note the effects on handling and to tune the car to the track using only those three adjustments (extension, compression, anti-roll bars). This should get you on your way to tuning like a pro.

Pro advice, but it should have been point #1 so I would have disregarded the rest of post. 💡

Bingo... I do it to annoy people. Offering great tunes nobody wants to use and not providing the tunes people want. Success!

I actually started with Comfort Soft tunes but figured most people were idiots and in my infinite generosity bumped most up to Sport Soft.

Off topic... I'm willing to recruit test drivers and in return share the secrets of my mediocre success in the GT tuning scene.
can I become a test driver I'm not a great driver (I generally rely on tuning and better cars etc) but that will help see what the general public will think of your tunes

I'd be happy to test tunes, but exams are approaching so won't be on as much as I hoped.
Even so I will have time to test any tunes people may want me to try :)

add me on psn: smalldave then when you finish a tune I'll give it a whizz for you :)
I'm actually working on a Lotus Evora tune myself - i had more time on ps3 than expected today.

Open Intern Tuner Program
Tuning a car for maximum performance is a lengthy process. Results vary across courses and individual tweaks are required to customize each tune for best performance on a specific course. Depending on the classification of the car, the initial public release may include a single setup or a sub set of alternative setups that may perform better at one or more courses based on track common course characteristics. However, even these alternative setups are limited in their scope and can be further enhanced on a per course basis. To assist in meeting these stringent performance quotas, Deep Forest Tunery is enlisting volunteers to submit feedback on our public releases with your tweaks to enhance our base setups. If you submit feedback, it will first be evaluated for quality; if accepted, your GTP forum handle will be credited publicly in the tune appendix in which your submitted tweaks appear. A scoring system is planned but not yet implemented; drivers who submit regular quality feedback of acceptable use will be given credits towards tune requests, when you have enough we will tune a car at your request.

Please do not post feedback as a reply to this thread! Please do not private message budious with feedback; private messages for other purposes are tolerable. All submissions should be made to deep[dot]forest[dot]tunery [at] gmail[dot]com (obscured dialect to avoid spambot roamers). Failure to submit feedback using the aforementioned method will be penalized when tune credits are evaluated; though your forum handle will always be credited and accompany your feedback if accepted.

OITP Eligible Tunes
  • Formula Gran Turismo

Acceptable Feedback Types
  • Track Specific Tuning Data
  • Driving Input Tuning Data (Wheel Users)
  • Seasonal Event or Time Trial Specific Tuning Data
  • Driving Conditions (Rain/Snow/Dirt) Specific Tuning Data
  • Endurance Event (A-Spec) Specific Tuning Data
  • Online Racing (Tire Wear On/Off) Specific Tuning Data
  • Other... (to be evaluated; private message budious)

This may be of interest since it is relevant to topic. It's not a training program, but I do intend to add some content related to that topic later on, see the second post in my thread for updates, etc.

Valid for the Formula Gran Turismo tune and onward, I'm going back to all my originals and purging or re-tuning so don't bother with those until I say otherwise.

If anyone need something to do, my tune shop needs reviews =P Also Budious, nice idea ;D

GfxJG, please add KMW to the list of garages looking for a tuning partner / test driver (if you could add a link to this post too, that would be great).

Here is the job description:
- receive upcoming KMW tunes from Nomis and Temetias. (In case you're wondering, yes KMW has been very quiet recently but we should become a lot more active from now on)
- test tunes at Cape Ring South and any other tracks that take your fancy
- provide feedback (within 1 week), to help refine the tune before it is released
- once tune is released, receive credit as official Test Driver (if you have made significant changes to the tune, we will give credit where credit is due, we're not looking to unfairly take credit from someone else's hard work)
- Nomis will be your "tuning partner", sharing tuning knowledge (*cough...FWIW...modesty...cough*) and helping with your own tunes. There aren't any plans to add another "fully fledged" tuner to KMW, but who knows, if you start knocking out good tunes, we might be begging you to put them in the KMW garage!

Interested? Send me a PM please.

I'm looking to do some reviews in my free time. If anyone is interested in having a specific car reviewed, you can either PM me with some details (I'll PM back to confirm details) or go and post a request in my new review's thread.

EivlEvo's Tuner Review Thread.

I'm currently looking to take on any type of tune, but if you'd like specifics I'm looking for Camaro, Mustang, Challenger (all the new versions) tunes as I'm planning a 3 way showcase. (Not sure if it will be competitive within GT5 yet though)

I've only done one review, but I feel confident in my work, which can be seen in JG's thread or mine which I've linked.

DFT's page for the Open Tuning Initiative

I have been working the past few days to get some of my ideas and formulas structured and into reasonably sounding and somewhat less ambiguous forms that they exist in my mind on my scrap papers. I have been somewhat successful in this transition. A great deal of cleanup and revision is required, and I will continue to post examples and guided demonstrations on how to use my system in more detail as the project progresses. In the meantime, you can read it and give me feedback and I will attempt to explain or rewrite those portions in greater detail and cite specific examples to help further the comprehension.
