steering wheel (still doubting to purchase one) need advice

i have both the DFGT and the G27 and i suck just as bad as when using a dual-shock. what gets me is, in the real world i freaking own :(

as in, driving a sports car in real life. nothing too high-end, but i can still drive and not spin out and hit every single wall like ping-pong

Not sure where the OP is from but in Canada, Best Buy price matches any Canadian Retailer, even from the internet. So all you have to do is search online, find someone with a new one on sale or the best price, and they'll match it. I got mine for just over $200 + tax around last Christmas. 👍👍 Other retailers in other countries may do the same.

Price matching also works even if the store doesn't "advertise" price matching. Just play the good old - .....if you can't/won't match store x's price, bye bye! Works everytime.

Very true, things are very competitive these days and everyone is selling the same stuff so it's pretty easy to find something in 20 or 30 different places. If one doesn't investigate most purchases you are definitely losing out.

Mainly Track. Nurb, etc. Only tracks I can seem to keep stable on are the GT originals, like trial mountain etc.

When I say what do you do, I mean what do you do in real life with a sports car.

In GT, Trial Mountain has been in my rotation of go to courses as of late. Fun sections.
 
oh, nothing official or anything like that. just some reckless driving when the roads were clear of people. Lots of bendy highway in MD. Never did get to go to racing school, like i wanted.
 
I think i'll try my Logitech Momo wheel. I just googled a bit and it seems that works with GT5 and the PS3. Just no stick shift and 4 out of 6 buttons. But that is fine.

If you are saying you can only use 4 buttons you're going to be awfully short of buttons. I have 16 programmed on my G27 and wouldn't want to lose a single one.
 
Well i just tried it. And it works quite fine. Really makes driving without TCS easier and allows for quite harder braking and braking allot deeper into the corner.
I had forgotten how small the wheel was compared to the one in my rl car haha.

However i removed the wheel again, as i just don't really have the right chair and table hight to use it comfortably. And i am quite confident i can drive around equal laptimes with the DS3 then i can with the wheel, and with he DS3 i can just sit wherever i want, how i want. Just more relaxed :)
 
You will appreciate driving with a wheel if your setup is properly arranged.

Congratulations:tup: If you feel this way about the retro wheel without it not being properly secured and set up for you, I can guarantee if you upgrade to the DFGT and secure it properly it'll be even better. Good luck:tup:👍

Hehe, it was properly secured mind you. But the pedals where either too far forward or too far back, i just could not be bothered to adjust it as i was just testing it.
I have driven my MOMO in Nascar 2003 season (the last great nascar game by Papirus) and GTR 1&2 and Legends.
But for me atm i just preffer the more laid back driving the DS3 offers.
I also swap position allot, from my pc screen to the TV. So a fixed setup isn't working atm.
Just maybe, when GT6 is here and if GTR 3 turns out nice, i might get myself one of those racing seat setups.

Many of them come with step by step instructions and photos and many are working on a tight budget as well. Worth a look if you don't want to fork over several hundred clams on something new. I myself have a homemade rig I picked up from my brother that I added a captains chair to out of a minvan and put it on sliders (hardwood floors) so I can move it around without scratching the floor. Works beautifully and comfortable for hours if need be and cost me $50.

I would say : don't get a wheel !

What's your real car ? I can have more emotions driving a Fiat 500 in Nurburgring with the DS3 pad than a Mercedes on a highway with a real steering wheel.

Gran Turismo is probably the best racing game ever for driving with a pad. I use G27 but it wouldn't be (almost) a problem if I had to do without it. If you want to have the feeling of a true steering wheel, you must understand that G27 et DFGT are toys. But yes, from this point of view, a wheel would always be better than DS3.


The problem is you have to play a lot in order to get the best of you wheel (first hours spent on wheel are always a pain). After I think ten hours, the feeling becomes great.

Avantages of a wheel compared to DS3 :
- Precision but you must not overrate this part, a videogame wheel will never have the precision of a real wheel (encoder that translates your wheel movement to the videogame have a limited number of positions called bits), and the reaction time of a wheel will always have a very little delay time on the screen.
- More important angle braking...
- ...combined with the ability to control by yourself oversteers et understeers, especially on fast turns (don't underestimate this loving part)

Few advantages but these points make the pleasure of driving on GT5 pretty close to the pleasure of real sport driving.

And personally, my greatest moment with my wheel was on F1 2013 at Monaco. It really remind me the sensation I had in karting. If there is a kind of racing game perfectly adapted to steering wheel, it's certainly F1 games (and probably rally games too but for the moment I don't like the lack of precision from the wheel on Richard Burns Rally, I probably need training)

I have the DFGT wheel and wanted to know if there is a way to reduce the turning radius of the wheel. When I get to the hairpin at Monaco right now I have to turn the wheel almost way too much to the point where to get it back to top dead center is very difficult. The degrees that I have to turn gets my hands in a twist??

There is a way but you have to get into hex editing to do it and that cannot be discussed here. I'd try Google. You do realize though, in this case anyway, you'd be changing the steering radius of the car to accomodate one turn? That may not work to your advantage.
 
Actually, as detailed in this thread, you may have a DFGT that can be set through a button press sequence and it will toggle through 4 different rotational degree settings. Be advised, this setting works reliably on G27s but not on every DFGT.
 
I have a wheel, but I hardly use it since I'm so used to the ds3
 
I use a lap tray, with the two legs farthest from me removed on my armchair, the wheel clamps to the tray and the arms of the chair stop it rotating. No need for a special seat when you have a Lazeeboy!
 
A wheel is the only way to go. When you drive a real car in real life what do you use? Steering wheel comes to mind so why would you not use a wheel on gt5.
Anyone got a wheel they dont want? Mine is giving up now been apart so many times.

I'm very used to the DS3, so my lap times are a little bit better with it, when I can put a good line, which doesn't happen all the time.
With the wheel it's hard to match my fatest lap on the DS3, but I'm much more consistent with it, the times are almost always the same.

You will always feel that way once you get used to a wheel.

I'm pretty sure they start off talking about secret degrees of rotation settings for the G27, but end up confirming that it works on DFGT as well. I apologise if I'm wrong, I'm going from vague memories.
