I've been online about 6 months now with my PS3, and something that has gotten to me, my mates, and other British gamers is... THE FACKIN' DUMBASS AMERICANS! Thats not a broad sweeping generalisation, but there are a hardcore minority/majority, that simply have no respect whatsoever for any non-American. If its not constant name-calling, insulting, or slandering, its child-like boasting on how great they think they are, and thats after they have accused you of cheating, lagging or hacking! It wasn't so bad on Resistance, because you could mute them or play on European servers, but since COD4 they have returned with a vengeance! What gives?
In general, us Brits are a friendly bunch. I have yet to hear a single Brit having a go at anyone for nothing, in fact, we welcome anyone and everyone we play against, showing respect and acknowledging skill when we see it. Any anger we do have, is saved for those aforementioned foreigners.
I don't understand why it has to be like this. I brought my PS3 to play against gamers from all over the world - that was a big selling point for me (and the fact that the PS3 is the bollocks!) I welcome everyone, and show respect to everyone I meet and play against. If I get beat, it is myself that was not good enough, and not the other guy cheating/lagging/hacking. And no matter who wins, I will always offer congratulations, and refrain from 'rubbing it in' if I happen to win.
In general, I only hear Brits and Americans on the VOIP, with the occasional foreign tongue punctuating the silence. The other night I was in a match on COD4 full of French guys. I could not understand a word that was said, but I was happy to play anyway because they were very organised. The match was great (we won), and they even spoke English briefly, to offer congratulations, then they went their way, we went ours - that's how it should be. I can only imagine that (from my online experiences thus far) that an American (not all, but some) would of found a reason to rip into them.
This isn't some anti-American rant either, it just happens to be Americans (almost exclusively) that do this. There really are some annoying sods out there, that give good American gamers a bad name. There is a guy in our (British) clan from Alaska, and he has to be one of the soundest guys I've ever met. He's so laid back, its unreal, and you can guarantee that when he's online, there is a good laugh to be had by all. Even he thinks that there are many Americans online that have no respect. He often says he's American, but not like 'those'. Why is it like this?
