I've been online about 6 months now with my PS3, and something that has gotten to me, my mates, and other British gamers is... THE FACKIN' DUMBASS AMERICANS! Thats not a broad sweeping generalisation, but there are a hardcore minority/majority, that simply have no respect whatsoever for any non-American. If its not constant name-calling, insulting, or slandering, its child-like boasting on how great they think they are, and thats after they have accused you of cheating, lagging or hacking! It wasn't so bad on Resistance, because you could mute them or play on European servers, but since COD4 they have returned with a vengeance! What gives?

In general, us Brits are a friendly bunch. I have yet to hear a single Brit having a go at anyone for nothing, in fact, we welcome anyone and everyone we play against, showing respect and acknowledging skill when we see it. Any anger we do have, is saved for those aforementioned foreigners.

I don't understand why it has to be like this. I brought my PS3 to play against gamers from all over the world - that was a big selling point for me (and the fact that the PS3 is the bollocks!) I welcome everyone, and show respect to everyone I meet and play against. If I get beat, it is myself that was not good enough, and not the other guy cheating/lagging/hacking. And no matter who wins, I will always offer congratulations, and refrain from 'rubbing it in' if I happen to win.

In general, I only hear Brits and Americans on the VOIP, with the occasional foreign tongue punctuating the silence. The other night I was in a match on COD4 full of French guys. I could not understand a word that was said, but I was happy to play anyway because they were very organised. The match was great (we won), and they even spoke English briefly, to offer congratulations, then they went their way, we went ours - that's how it should be. I can only imagine that (from my online experiences thus far) that an American (not all, but some) would of found a reason to rip into them.

This isn't some anti-American rant either, it just happens to be Americans (almost exclusively) that do this. There really are some annoying sods out there, that give good American gamers a bad name. There is a guy in our (British) clan from Alaska, and he has to be one of the soundest guys I've ever met. He's so laid back, its unreal, and you can guarantee that when he's online, there is a good laugh to be had by all. Even he thinks that there are many Americans online that have no respect. He often says he's American, but not like 'those'. Why is it like this?

It;s always like this. A-holes giving the few "normal" gamers (like me) a bad name. I've seen it on LFS as well, but never any foreign guys, almost always Americans saying things like "Learn to drive dumbass!" Did they ever stop to think that maybe that's what they're trying to do? It's not like it happens only on the dedicated racing servers either. I don't play online on the PS3 yet, but my best friends in LFS are from different countries.

Hey Magburner, Im a UK online gamer and I find that you have idiots from all walks of life and countries. I was watching my dad play online the other night, and he was playing on Warhawk against other brits and americans and some other european countries, and i found it was the brits that were doing the most name calling and trash talking. they were being rude to everyone so to say that the Americans are the ones doing thigs like this isnt accurate, dont get me wrong ive heard some trash talking too from all over the world, if you want sensible and very curtious playing apponants play the Japanese, Chinese and Koreans they are hard to beat and very nice people to play against.

I guess you've never gotten the "Simon Cowell" treatment then. Some of the Brits are pretty snobby.

Yes, I agree. I am American however, I never thought I would be ashamed of my own countrymen.

Ahh America, a place where ignorance now reigns supreme. Sometimes it's gotten to the point where I've completely reamed out a few people for being complete a-holes. It's always been this way and it's gotten even worse in recent years. I have a tendancy to prefer Japanese (or other foreign) servers in games because of it. Yet, I'm suprised by just how excelent of a community this is. Most of the Americans here are pretty level headed. It's just in general American's seem to exhibit extreme ignorance and complete lack of respect.

Frome what I understand Gran Turismo 5 Prologue JP version will be coming with pretty bare bones online capability consisting of only a "quick match" function, but will be added on to leading up to the other releases. For this reason I'm glad it won't be released in the states for a while as it woud result in a complete and utter disaster in foreign relations if this were the case (especially without any sort of penalty for playing "bumper cars"). I'll be getting the Japanese release so that I can race in peace and tranquility at least for a while...

On a side-note I'm new on these forums, but have been lurking for at least a good 3 or 4 years haha. It feels good to finally post :D. I've been having some problems though... it seems that it takes forever for my posts to finally show up (literally hours); why is this?

Edit: Nevermind... my post actually showed up right away this time! :D

And us Canadians just boot up NHL 2008 and settle everything there.

I'm so glad you put all American gamers into the same bunch. I gave you -rep just because you stated off your post with "THE FACKIN' DUMBASS AMERICANS!". Honestly I love the British and I think most of them are great people, but you make them look like rather poor individuals. I know this isn't true based on my time spent over there, but I would strongly recommend you change your attitude.

There are better ways to discuss your displeasure with a certain type of gamer, but to call up "dumbass Americans" is uncalled for.

BLAME CANADA!!!

But on topic...
I've been playing COD4 online for the last couple of days and so far I haven't heard anything of the sort. But on R:FOM there was a lot of it (maybe it's just a question of time), mainly from - from what I could tell - americans and spaniards (sp?).
Telling other people to 'stfu' and insulting, heard it many times. Luckily on R:FOM there was an option to silence them.
Of course the above mentioned were not the only ones doing it, perhaps they 'stood out' more because of the sheer number of players or I got put in too many games with those same guys.

As in everything, there will always be a minority that pisses off the majority, there's nothing to do about it.
That's why I believe having matches between GTP members is a great way to have fun, communicate verbally between us, and avoid unpleasant situations like these.

THE FACKIN' DUMBASS AMERICANS!

Thats not a broad sweeping generalisation

This isn't some anti-American rant either

Yep. Doesn't look like it. And it certainly doesn't look like casual racism when you say:

Any anger we do have, is saved for those aforementioned foreigners.

Why are there more poor American gamers online? Because there's more Americans online. Why? Because it's the richest country in the world and has more PS3s than anyone else.

Incidentally, I've not locked this for the throwaway racism, but because it's not going to lead anywhere good.
