After looking through my garage, I noticed I had a couple of unused Impreza Wagons (I have a thing where I’ll buy every 6.2mile car I see used in case I need it later), so I decided to give one of them a tune. Now I already have a tuned Impreza Wagon, in fact 2, so I needed to do something special with this one. I thought about doing a story with characters and blah, but I’ve tried that before and it gets boring quickly. So, I decided to do a short story, narrated by moi (I was told I was good at short stories at school :D ), which also doubles up as a race report. So, enjoy, and leave comments and feedback!

For your information:
Car: Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon WRX STi Version VI (GF) ‘99
BHP: 287
Equipped parts: S1 (sports hard) tyres, SU0217 wheels (from the Subaru WRX STi Type R ‘99 coupe I believe)
Mileage in game (after race): 34.0miles
Mileage for the purpose of the story: 190,000+miles

Race: Capri Rally (Easy) – Costa di Amalfi Reverse
Laps: 2
Prize for winning: 5,000cr
Opponent: Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione ‘91
A-Spec points: 9pts

Another day, another delivery. I was all up for working for my friend in his bread shop, heck, I even offered to work for free! But being the friend that he is, he still pays me more than the other employees. Don’t think I sit there making bread all day though, oh no. See, when people walk by the bread shop, they aren’t looking at the bread, they’re looking at the white Impreza Wagon outside. MY white Impreza Wagon. Its not often the people of Costa di Amalfi get to see a performance wagon. And even when they do, it’s nowhere near as clean as mine. And believe me, in the 2 years of living here, I haven’t seen any car as clean as mine.

So, anyway, my job at the shop. Its simple really, I’m a delivery driver. Yeah, you guessed it, I take the Impreza up the hills, which follow most of the Capri route, and deliver people bread. Sounds boring, and it is. But, when the bread is out the boot, I have nothing to break in the back, so I tend to burn rubber on the way down. Of course, it has ended in tears a few times. I remember ripping my bumper off on a wall, and nearly hitting an oncoming donkey. But, apart from that, I’ve never really had a serious accident. And I hope I never will.

I’ve owned this Impreza for 9 years. I’ve owned it from new. Although somehow, in 9 years, I’ve driven over 190,000 miles in it, and believe me, it hasn’t been easy maintaining such a high mileage car. I’ve gone through 2 gearboxes, 4 clutches, 10 sets of tyres, and the current set I have on are about half way to being useless. The warranty ran out about 6 years ago, so I’ve had to pay for a lot of the replacement parts, including a gearbox. Originally, this car was sitting in a Subaru dealership in Japan, going for 4,250,000 Yen. Stupidly I bought it, and ended up paying even more money to get it flown to the UK. Although now I don’t regret the purchase. I had a few optional extras fitted too. Type R wheels from the Subaru catalogue as well as a beefier exhaust was fitted. CD player with some upgrade speakers, and an amplifier in the boot sorts out the music. Body hugging seats came standard.

So anyway, delivery time. As usual I carefully went up the hill, only doing 20mph. Can’t break the bread now can I? Meanwhile my CD player is blasting out some Linkin Park. Awesome. I got to the top, delivered the bread, but before I could get into the Impreza, a blue Lancia Integrale pulled up. A well-built guy stepped out of the Integrale. He seemed interested in my Impreza, eyeing it up like it was a barely dressed woman. “Can I help you?” I asked. “I am the fastest racer on Capri. I have noticed you delivering here, and I challenge you to a race on Capri” the guy replied. I didn’t hesitate to accept. Fastest racer or not, his Integrale doesn’t hold a candle to my wagon.

I followed him to the bottom, where we’d have a rolling start, go uphill and then back down. I’ve driven here a ton of times, no way he thinks he can keep ahead. Narrow roads or not.

Without any signal, the Integrale floored it. I laughed, merely pushing the gas pedal down got me right up his backside. Metaphorically speaking. First hairpin came up quickly, a tight left-hander, followed by a tight right. My Impreza made quick work of them. Rally bred wagon, you wouldn’t believe it could do corners could you? Another left hand hairpin came up, the Integrale went wide, I tried to accelerate past it, but it quickly swerved, blocking me. Damn cheater. I caught some airtime off a sharp bit of hill, a great feeling when you know you could potentially land ON a Lancia Integrale. If only I had a Dixie horn. I could be the Dukes of err… Capri! A quick right-left chicane later, and we’re at the 4th hairpin. A nice 2nd gear right-hander. I dived down the inside, trying to score and easy pass, and with a steep uphill ahead, probably scoring the win. But the Integrale driver, a fair driver, a driver that would never block me, tried to sideswipe me! I braked hard. I love winning, but I love my paintjob more. I was stuck behind the Integrale the whole uphill section. The Boxer4 under my bonnet could easily succeed in making us overtake, but there was no room. I knew however that the downhill section was next, and that’s where I could attack. We both stuck close to the wall on the next left, I held back a bit and put some distance between us, knowing at the right moment I could shoot by and he wouldn’t have a chance to block. Going through the peak at 80mph, it was level between us. Next came another left, the entry to the downhill section. However I stuffed up the corner entry, and missed my chance to overtake whilst the Integrale understeered wide. No matter though, there are more places to overtake. Right hand hairpin came up, I took it full throttle in 2nd gear, the tyres screamed, pleading with me to stop. Another left hand hairpin, I braked hard, nearly rear ending the Integrale. I went wide on the next hairpin, my tyres were cooked for sure. Only 1 hairpin before the final straight to go. If I couldn’t take him before we fully lapped Capri, I’d have no chance surviving another lap.

Final left hand curve, we both put our front left tyres on the kerb, trying to get the best exit speed. However, it was here I knew I could win. All I needed to do was floor it and power ahead before he blocks again. I kept my foot to the floor after the curve, I was right behind the Integrale. Then, I shifted up to 3rd, the turbo whistled, and all of a sudden, I was side by side with the Integrale. I took a moment to look at my opponent, he was frantically trying to go faster, rocking back and forth, shouting, the works. Shifting into 4th, it was all over for the Integrale. My speedometer showed 120mph before I noticed the spec in my mirror that was the Integrale. I had won. No, we had won. Me and the Impreza.

Upon my return to the shop, the whole store erupted in cheers. I guess the news of the race and results already hit the village. Above all the celebration, I couldn’t help but ask…

“Does anyone know where the nearest Kwik-Fit is?”

Nice story man. To believe so much drama from a 9 point race though...

Way better than I could do. Very enjoyable.

Great story! Im similar, I have characters when I play. Ive kinda semi-fictionalised my race reports, not in the sense of making up what happened, but made them seem more real. Soon I'll get roound to introduciing actual characters :) But good story. And the fact that its 9 points seems irrelevant - that and the Citta di Aria track are SO tough to pass on (and you get speed penalty if you as much as bump the other guy), thus meaning that the race can be incredibly tight no matter what the car, so well done on hauling your big ol' Wagon around the island and moving it past the (presumably slightly more nimble handling) Integrale :)

nice story man 👍👍

seems like some people enjoy racing at Capri.., although your story kind of sounds familiar .., you know, being a (tofu, not bread) delivery guy, taking care not to (spill the tofu, not break the bread) on the way up the mountain, and then flooring it on the way down.., then someone, who claims tha he is the fastest racer around, using a 1991 car (a Delta, not an "FD") challenges you.., and then you win.., 💡

check out my story also (see my sig).., :D

Thanks for the comments guys 👍

Falcon787B: Yeah, it was pretty tough. That Integrale blocks the road, and knowing how big a wagon is, its impossible to pass without a penalty, or turning the race into a banger race. :ouch:

=drifting24/7=: Well, it is kinda familiar isnt it? :D Although the AE86 (hey isnt that white with new wheels too? :D another thing familiar!) passed the FD on the way down, rather than get directly challenged at the top. But you got a point.

And I did check out your story, I posted the 2nd reply! :p

may i ask, where did you get that Impreza Wagon?? all i see in the used car showrooms are sedans, no wagons.., that Impreza wagon looks "cool" with the rear spoiler mid-way of the car's height.., :D

It'll be in the Late 90's showroom, hanging out with the Coupe and/or Sedan Version VI Imprezas. :sly: Its not a rare car (I have 2 6.2 mile versions, including this one :D), so it should show up very soon.

once i see it, i won't hesitate to buy it.., :sly::D since when have you seen a "WRC-bred" wagon?? i mean, your typical wagons can't tackle corners like the Impreza can.., 👍

True, but the Stagea sure does put up a fight :sly:

Man, I have so missed the chance to say "WRC-bread" wagon in the story! well okay its not that funny :indiff:

uh, "bread" is different from "bred".., "bread" is the soft thing that you eat in breakfast, and "bred" is past tense for "breed".., get it??

what are you saying?? if you would replace the "rally-bred" with "WRC-bred", that would really put a smile on someone's face.., :D:sly:

Say "bread" out loud, then say "bred" out loud, they sound the same, thats what I was getting at :sly:

i looked at your pictures again, i like the first one and the last 5 pics.., on the 3rd to the last pic, it looks like you did a "gutter run" or "mizoutoshi" there.., :D IIKKEEEEE!!!

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I put my wheel onto the kerb, however, the blasted Integrale did the same! Foiling my plans to end the battle there rather than just killing it down the straight.

Nice story Roj, I enjoyed the read.

I can think of a certain VE V8 Sportswagon that laps Bathurst as quickly as a WRX STi :D
