OK, so in my thread about buying my PSP we got off-track and began discussing Patapon. I thought I would actually make a Patapon thread so people can discuss strategies and whatnot, and those interested can actually see that Patapon is being discussed.

For those who do not know Patapon is a combination rhythm, strategy, resource management, RPG game.

You are the mighty god of the Patapon race. You must command them into battle using drum beats. The Patapon prophecy tells of the Patapons reaching Earthend where they will see "IT" Unfortunately the Patapons have been enslaved by the Zigotons, so you must free your followers and lead them to Earthend.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Game Spoilers from here on

Continuing on with the discussion from the non-Patapon thread:

I have made it to the fourth boss, the second sand worm, Dokaknel, but haven't beaten him yet. I have Dodonga at lvl 5, Majidonga at lvl 4, Zaknel at lvl 3, and Dokaknel at lvl 1.

I have the tree, flower, and mountain mini-games unlocked. The mountain mini-game is freaking impossible. Do you have to be perfect to get anything from him? Watching him whine when I screw up is driving me insane. Oh well, I can get plenty of titanium from the Desert Paradise hunting level, which has given me titanium 3 out of five times. The pocheeck gives me a cherry tree, the momiti gives me succulent (dream in EU?) meat, and the Kacheeck (sand) will give me stone, iron, or titanium. Catch a heard of Kacheeck (sand) and you can get all three. I have found that the key to success here is having at least one Mogyoon and one Tikulee Yumipon.

Tikulee Yumipons have a 90% chance of a critical hit and over 100% with a steel bow. So, while they deliver very little damage they can give a critical blow on every arrow. Mogyoon Yumpions deal 28-35 hp of damage and since they triple shot in fever mode that means they can deliver over 100 hp in a shot. With these two in my hunting party I can kill Kacheecks and Motitis in one fever shot.

Speaking of Rarepons I was making a spreadsheet on how to create each kind, then I discovered the formula. Making my spreadsheet so far pointless.

So, to start here are the Rarepon ranks:

  1. Normal - white
  2. Pykola - red
  3. Gekolos - yellow
  4. Mofeel - purple
  5. Tikulee - blue and spiky
  6. Mogyoon - horns and purple
  7. Barsala - wings and green

Now each resource is separated into four levels. Using stone as an example:

  1. stone
  2. hard iron
  3. titanium ore
  4. mitheral

And wood:

  1. wood branch
  2. cherry tree
  3. hinoki
  4. super cedar

Now assign those numbers as values. Wood and stone makes Yumipons.
So, take the value of the rarepon and add one, that is the total combined value of your resource needed.

In other words
  • Type ---- resource value
  1. Normal ----- 2
  2. Pykola ----- 3
  3. Gekolos ---- 4
  4. Mofeel ---- 5
  5. Tikulee ---- 6
  6. Mogyoon -- 7
  7. Barsala ---- 8

So, if you wanted to make a Mogyoon Yumipon your resource value must total 7. That means that you can use either titanium (3) & Super Cedar (4) - (total 7) or Mitheral (4) & Hinoki (3) - (total 7).

I hope that makes sense.

Also, I found that vegetables can be substituted in for meats at a 1-1 value, but it will cost you less kaching. I guess that is a subtle hint at vegetarianism.

Spell check hates Patapon

for the mountain mini game, you need to get at least 3 out of 4 prefect to get anything from it. and i thought i was the only one who was having problems.

for some reason, i thought you were farther a head than the 4th boss.

im getting really annouyed at this mission. at first its a straight up fight against Gon. but, then about half way i guess, the band starts showing up and putting my people to sleep. yumipon with fire bows shred them but i cant get them close enough to attack them with out falling a sleep.

i guess i need to have my tatepn calways defending while having my bekapons try to hurt gon while the yaripon try to get the band.

and after the band is gone, gon clones himself and by then i only have distance attackers. argh!

i need more weapons dammit! :(

[edit - that was easy. just did the tailwind juju, shreaded the band and then just attacked the gong clones. now ive his scythe :D

See this is why I haven't moved farther along. I am building up my army. I currently have a two Mogyoon Yumipons, one Tatepon and one Yaripon. I am waiting until I can get one Mogyoon Kibapon. I would also like to get a Barsala to see if they are worth the resources. But two Mogyoon Yumipons, both with fire bows, and two Tikulee Yumipons with steel bows is a mighty force to be reckoned with, especially if I can hold Fever mode.

I hunt a lot and then kill some bosses. I have the two dragons at lvl 6 and Zaknel at 6 and Dokaknel at lvl 5. I also got the tooth of Dokaknel spear weapon. It will actually go through enemies, possibly striking more than one, until it hits the ground. Arming a Tikulee with it and you have a 160% critical chance.

I have finally gotten the mountain mini game to where I can now get iron from him nearly every time, but it seems a waste of time when I can get iron and titanium just from hunting in the two deserts. Perhaps that is what is taking me so long, I am spending a ton of time hunting to get resources. I do that in any resource management game though. I horde resources like nobody's business. I can make any Rarepon up to a Tikulee at this point.

And if you want more weapons, as I understand it, that problem is easily solved once you get the blacksmith mini-game unlocked. Mithral will make divine weapons.

Currently I am on Despair. Are you supposed to lose that level once? I lost and it opened another level, but I didn't save because I kept losing my fever mode and felt like that was why I lost. I had broken all the traps and only needed to move in for the kill when I died. If I can hold my Fever and destroy the traps before my melee troops are dead I think I can beat it.

If you aren't doing it, I suggest headphones. I decided to start using them and sitting with my wife in the living room instead of hiding in another room and found I can hear the beat much better and when the level has few distractions I can nearly keep my Fever mode all the way through. Now, if I can only mute my wife. You would think that she would figure out that headphones mean no talking.

I've also been distracted this week as I got Super Smash Brothers in for my Wii, bought the Metal Gear Solid Essentials collection, and finally reached a point in my replay of GT1 that I am chugging along really well now.

So many games, so little time. And it will only get worse.

well im sure your army would kick my armys butt, but, my problem here was that if i just defended, gong would still nickel and dime my defenders til they died and i was either shooting arrows with no wind or blowing against. besides, arent the only ones resistint to sleep the yaripons?

my bosses:
dodonga - lvl 8
mojidonga - lvl 7
zankel - lvl 4
donaknel - lvl 4
dogaeen - lvl 4
gaeen - lvl 4
crab queen - lvl 3

when i go against bosses i take: tatepon, dekapon, and yumipon. most of the time i dont really defend unless its an earth quake type of attack. ive found that if youve all of your deffenders attacking and theyre standing right underneth it. running out to block fire breath/eye beams hurts your tatepons more than it helps anyone else. so ill have my tatepon and dekapons keep attacking. against ground pound attacks, ill just run away. the only time ill defend is against earth quake attacks like the one zaknel uses.

i usually dont take yaris out anywhere execpt while hunting. i prefer the yumipons larger attack area. plus, when youre fighting a boss you can start attacking it when its off screen. just watch the yumis eyes and youll know when to attack.

sweet!

i was making it to the castle and having problems from there. quit, and when i got back the priestess was like "im oh so sorry" then a random pon runs in tells you about a catapault which leads you to another mission. the catapault destories towers with two hits and one hit for anything else it comes in contact with. (not your own people).

but, the rerun through of that mission is the only time you get to use it.

yup! have a set of ds ear phones that works wonders

ive alwso been distracted. my cousin got an xbox360 recently so ive been play assassins creed, and nfs:carbon when i get the chance. and now he just got gears of war. plus god of war (psp) is enjoyable when the mood hits. and ive been told ff:cc was just released so i need to pick that up as well.

I do not look forward to battling these later rounds.

You can replace Yaripon with Dekapon? How do they attack around the Tatepon? Or do they all just bunch up near the front?

I only ever run away. Once I got that command I didn't bother defending again. Although, lately with my Rarepon enforced army in Fever mode I can do enough damage while the bosses work up to an attack and stop them. The two sandworms' ground pounding attack is the easiest because even with a strong wind at my back I cannot over shoot them. But if I am not in Fever I just run away and then come running back in with a full bore attack. If I am in a good enough rhythm I can have my Fever back by the time I attack again.

i usually dont take yaris out anywhere execpt while hunting. i prefer the yumipons larger attack area. plus, when youre fighting a boss you can start attacking it when its off screen. just watch the yumis eyes and youll know when to attack.
I have decide that Yumipons are my most valuable unit, mainly because in Fever mode they do the triple shot, are effective from a distance and my Mogyoon's can do as much as 70 damage with one fire arrow, so fever mode can do well over 200 damage in one attack. Hunting with them has been incredibly simple because I build Fever up before I start moving and then kill nearly everything in one attack. I can finish the Pata Plain in less than a minute now.

Yeah, I just wish it were unveiled sooner than it is and hopefully it won't be too hard. After you create all the divine weapons he then makes alloys, which are used for later units.

But anyway, it creates this situation where you have to balance making Rarepons early or saving resources to make mighty weapons later.

Well, that explains the catapult I have seen in screenshots and now I know I am supposed to lose the battle. I kind of like that fact that the story line involves being beaten at least once instead of being this unbeatable force like many games do.

plus god of war (psp) is enjoyable when the mood hits. and ive been told ff:cc was just released so i need to pick that up as well.
These are the only two games that Metacritic shows as having higher ratings than Patapon.

at least you can block the megapons sleep attack.

You can replace Yaripon with Dekapon? How do they attack around the Tatepon? Or do they all just bunch up near the front?

they tend to bunch up at front until you tell them to run away. and due to their slow speed, it takes a couple of attack turns to get them back into position. but, one of them has an attack range of 15-170 iirc so it brings the pain.

i need to get more rare materials and make my army stronger, but, some of my tatepons are still using wood shield/tin axes :|. my 5 of my yumis are using firbows and one steel bow. my yaris are all equiped well with two steel spears, one spear of protection, and two dokaknels fangs. but, i dont really use them :|

whats the point of helmets if your addvanced units cant use them?

whats the point of helmets if your addvanced units cant use them?
To make up for this:
i need to get more rare materials and make my army stronger,
And in some cases the defense of lower rarepons is less than a normal unit with an advanced helmet. I know I have had situations where I had a Pykola at the back because my normal units with steel and wind helmets had better defense and give them a decent weapon and they are suddenly better. If resources were plentiful enough to get a full army of Mogyoon or Barsala units then they are completely pointless.

Another thing is that while a Mofeel (purple) has great defense they have a weakness against fire. So, depending on what you are doing it would be better to have a normal unit with a good helmet (especially if it ads fire resistance) than a Mofeel. In all honesty the only Rarepons I would completely replace well equipped normal units with are Tikulee (and that is borderline, but his criticals are deadly), Mogyoon, and Barsala. The right combination of equipment can make normal units better than the others, depending on circumstances.

hey guys. Does someone maybe know where i can get the rain drum for the desert. I don't know where to get it:(

go to the first hunting grounds after you got the chaka drum. you should get the chaka drum by destorying a tomb stone in the area you fight donga. then when you get to the tree with "triangle, circle, triangle, circle" play that beat until it raises up and spits out a brooken compass. then itll point to majidonga where there will be another tomb stone. destory it and then kill majidonga.

then just remember to equip the rain juju before heading into the mission.

[edit - mega, yari, and yumi with devine strength stew are pwn'ing bosses though i cant seem to kill a gold bird. ive only seen them in "looking for a lost star" or, close enough. but, theres a something there with a huge mouth in the way and i can only land one or two attacks on the gold bird before it runs off. plus the stage is incredilbily small, so, if i dont get it with my first few attacks its gone.]

But its kinda weird. I beaten him twice but i still got nothing from him. How many time do i have to beat him then?

Which him?

And check your items.

Ok, so far i have 3 drums. an green, blue and an red one. Do i have to fight Donga again?

Have you unlocked the secret totem pole in the Patata Plain hunting grounds? That gives you a compass that unlocks a second dragon where the Rain JuJu miracle is.

Err.. i don't know actually. went to hunting ground and when i arrived at an tree, i pressed triangle, circle, triangle, triangle, it only moved the tree and that was it. Then i went again to Donga and defeated him. Only got an white stone and an red stone. I don't know what to do, sorry:indiff:

OK, I see your problem. In the hunting ground the tree/totem pole/whatever has the triangle, circle, triangle circle on it. Keep playing that until it rises all the way up and spits an object out (three or four times I think). This will be a compass and it will open a new boss dragon level.

Ok, i tried it and it worked. Thnx a lot FK. I owe you for this:bowdown:
No problem. Enough people had trouble with that one that they had to tell how to do it on the Playstation Blog. Fortunately, they posted that before I did it so I knew ahead of time.

The only major complaint reviewers had is that some of the hidden things necessary to progress were not intuitive.

i just unlocked the blacksmith game. i wasted at least 13 hard iron materials trying to get it right and then i got two alloys. ive 2 more mithrils to use, but, i used hard iron materials to practice and not waste any really rare materials.

basically youve to get it 99.9% right to get anything.

Does it take stone or does it have to be a minimum of iron? Cause, I am maxed out on stone at this point.

fwiw, this is my current army i use to hunt with and do boss battles with:

tikulee.megapon - gaeen's horn
mogyon.megapon - gaeen's horn
barsala.megapon - cioking's horn

3x tikulee.yaripon - spear of protection, dokaknel's fang and scorching spear
3x barsala.yaripon - 2x scorching spear and 1x dokaknel's fang

2x mofeel.yumipon - 2x fire bow
3x tikulee.yumipon - 2x fire bow and devine bow
barsala.yumipon - giant bow "failnaught"

i gave the failnaught to my barsala to try to offset the weapons slow speed to make the 13-121 damage worth using. then throw in a divine stew and bosses arent that hard anymore ;)

the rest:

tatepon - spiderton helmet, gond scythe, and ultra heavy shield
mogyoon.tatepon - zleep zword z and ultra heavy shield
2x mofeel.tatepon - zleep zword z and ice shield and steel axe and ice shield
2x tikulee.tatepon - zleep zword z and ice shield and zleep zword z and ultra heavy shield

3x tikulee.dekapon - 2x nail studded bat and morning star "giganto"

mogyoon.kibapon - divine halberd and crimson horse
tikulee.kibapon - deflecting halberd and crimson horse
pyokola.kibapon - deflecting halberd and tough horse.

interesting ending. either IT was not what i expected or IT wasnt really there. the ending deffently sets up for a sequel

im not exactly sure what the plant bosses do execpt jump around, release sleep dust when you stun them and then try to eat you. but, if youve devine stew rescuing the pon before it gets eaten shouldnt take more than 1 attack.

the credits music awesome btw 👍 now to make an army of yellow winged guys! haha.

I know about the % chance for a critical hit, but what does it do to the damage: does it multiply it by 2 or 1.5 or what? The damage ranges are big enough so I can't tell.

Not a clue what the increase is as I have seen units with 30 damage points get anywhere from 50-100 in a single shot before. Part of the algorithm may also factor in a random variable for the critical increase. Basically making it like hitting different, more effective, weak points.

fool killer - have you finished the storyline yet? you can keep building your army after you finish the storyline so im guessing youre strong enough to finish it.

unfortinately, you cannot skip the credits after you kill the final boss. but, i like the credit music so its not so bad imo.

ive the first two dragons up to level 15th each iirc. the final boss is lvl 4 now iirc and the irons golums up to lvl10 or better.

and, as silly as it may sound, if they made a sound track available for this, id most likely get it when i had the money available.

and did you see the echochrome thread?

Unfortunately I haven't had much chance to play between work, a new niece, and my little free time being devoted to GT5P.

Being Spring I've also been busy with yard work and getting my vegetable garden up and running.

I do intend to put more time into it later, but right now I have just been too busy.

i stumbled accross this site while looking for pictures of the bosses/drum beats.

did they really take that much out?

[edit - another wtf?
