idk if someone already posted it.

so lets start!

for me .. uhmmm..

V4 : Nissan Sunny (Honda Civic)

V6 : BMW M1 Procar (scary!)

V8 : Lingenfilter C6 Z06 (lovely v8 sound)

V10 : Dodge Viper

V12 : Ferrari Enzo

Edit : v6 can be counted as flat 6 or w/e ... so let's share it :) :) :) vrooooom

4 pot - Some tuned exige somewhere
6 pot - M3 CSL
8 pot - SLR McLaren
10 pot - Porsche Carrera GT
12pot - Ferrari 250 GTO

Well my favourite V4 would have to be a Lancia Fulvia because I can't think of any other V4s in cars... but if we're talking inline fours then that's a whole new kettle of fish...

V4 : Nissan Sunny (Honda Civic)

That'd be a straight four. V4s are incredibly rare.

V6 : BMW M1 Procar (scary!)

That'd be a straight six.

Edit : v6 can be counted as flat 6 or w/e

A flat 6 would be a Boxer, and not a Vee.

So this thread becomes "What's your favourite engine sound for all 4 cylinders, all 6 cylinders, V8s, V10s and V12s". What about 5 cylinders, rotaries, W3/12/16s, flat 4/8/10/12/16s, H16s, flat-twins (the list goes on)?

Not to mention straight 3s, V-twins, single cylinder thumpers...

well you could all stop being so pedantic and did what I put - X pot, or X cyl. I was going to say the same thing, but I knew what the guy meant so I decided to try and answer the question instead 👍

No.

I'd like him to clarify the discrepancy between the title and his post. And then I'll think about whether the thread is necessary before I respond.

Good for you! You're in the wrong place if you don't like a bit of light-hearted pedantary.

Anyhoo... cars only. I'm skipping some of the larger inline engines and a few others as I don't know enough about the cars they were powered by. And no race cars either.

Single - Volkswagen 1l concept (1-cyl diesel)
Inline Twin - Fiat 500 (the original, obviously)
V-twin - 1930s Morgan Supersports
Flat twin - Citroen 2CV
Inline triple - Honda Beat (or VAG's 3-cyl 1.4 turbodiesel)
Inline 4 - Honda B16B used in the EK9 Civic Type R (closely followed by any Alfa Romeo twin-spark inline 4)
Flat 4 - Any old Volkswagen air-cooled engine
V4 - The narrow-angle V4 used in the Lancia Fulvia
Inline 5 - Alfa Romeo's 2.4 turbodiesel (tough competition here though as I love the sound of all inline 5s)
V5 - Volkswagen's V5 used previously in the Golf, Passat and Bora
Inline 6 - The amazing engine in BMW's E46 M3 CSL
Flat 6 - Any Porsche flat 6, either air-cooled or water cooled
V6 - Alfa Romeo's 3.2 V6 used in the 147 and 156 GTA models (though Ferrari's V6 used in the Dino and the Lancia Stratos runs it very close)
VR6 - Corrado VR6. (Volkswagen have the market cornered here. Technically counts as a different engine to the V6 as it uses a common cylinder head as the angle of the V is so narrow.)
V8 - Ferrari's flat-plane crank V8 used in their smaller sports cars. Spine tingling.
W8 - VW Passat W8
V10 - The gorgeous sound of the Porsche Carrera GT
Flat 12 - Ferrari 512 BB
V12 - Ferrari Enzo
W12 - Spyker C12 LaTurbie (VAG W12 engine)
W16 - Bugatti Veyron
Wankel rotary - Mazda RX-7

4cyl: Subaru Imprezza WRX STI, Lotus Elise
6cyl: Nissan GTR R35
8cyl: Ford Mustang GT Bullit, Audi R8
10cyl: Dodge Viper SRT 10, Audi R8 V10
12cyl: Lamborgini Mucielago
16cyl: there aren't many and I haven't heard the sound of a Veyron

4 Cyl : Nothing
6 Cyl : Nothing
8 Cyl : Aston Martin V8 Vantage
10 Cyl : Dodge Viper SRT-10
12 Cyl : Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series
16 Cyl : BRM V16 (Old engine used in F1 around 1950)

It was difficult coming to the favorites but it would have been too long writing every american muscle car in the V8 category :D

Well, if you can't have a laugh with your friends, who CAN you have a laugh with, eh?

Incidentally, the FTO is a 1.8 straight four or a 2.0 V6.

I am talking about the 6 cylinder version and was unsure if a straight 6 or not. thanks for the correction :-)

What, no Radial love? :nervous:

Four cylinder: WRX STI. Sorry, GTI. I love your sound, but it's no boxer.

Six cylinder: Porsche 911 Turbo. Apparently I'm a fan of flat engines.

Eight cylinder: AMG 6.2L V8. I'll take a C63, if only for the engine. KTHXBAI.

Ten Cylinder: Porsche Carerra GT. Too bad I haven't spent too much time around many of these.

Twelve Cylinder: AMG 7.3L V12. I just love the sound from that Zonda.

Is it sad I agree with 90% of those?

Well considering there are maybe two or three engines in 90% of those categories, I don't think it's all that sad.

Is that even a list of "favorite sounds" anyway? I didn't know that Passat W8s even made noise. Same with the V5.

V4?? Never heard of it... but heres my list:

4 Cylinders - Honda civic (b16b) Integra typeR (b18c) or civic typeR (K20A2)
6 Cylinders - 335i, 335d, GTR (VR38DETT), MINES bnr34 (RB26DETT) and supra (2JZ-GTE)
8 Cylinders - M3 and C63 AMG
10 Cylinders - M5, M6 and Gallardo
12 Cylinders - F50, Bugatti EB110GT and Zonda

Well, it's sort of a list of favourite engines in general but then I do like the sounds they produce even if it's not the traditional sporty sound that people usually describe as their favourites (case in point, the VW flat-4. Not sporty, but very distinctive and I like it. Other case in point, the two diesels I mentioned).

VAG V5s sound great in common with all 5-cyl engines, and as for the Passat W8, just go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Evv5gh_vlM4

For me.

V6: The V6 out of the second generation Ford Ranger
V8: Ford 289 HiPo, 4.6L DOHC Modular V8 from the Lincoln Aviator, and finally the 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel from the 1999 Ford F-350

Yes, I am a Ford guy. All these cars belong to my family so I am heavily biased towards their sounds.

Oh, come on, the OP never specified what the engines had to be in!

But you'll note I avoided including motorcycles and race cars in the list so it's to be assumed I avoided aircraft, trains, boats etc as well :p The list would look very different with motorcycles in there, at least with regard to single, twin, triple and 5 cylinder engines. And V4s, to tell the truth. My favourite inline fours are still in cars.

That fact that it was posted in a 'Cars in General' thread in an 'Automotive' section of the forum might have been a clue. ;)

Well, okay...but I'm still keepin' my motos, trains, and ships...and the tractor. and the fighter.

You do that 👍 :sly:

I'm still getting a sense of déjà vu with this thread, although i couldn't find anything using the site's search facility....
