The reason for this thread is because, due to circumstances beyond my control, starting from next week I may no longer be able to afford a broadband connection for a while......and hence I may be gone from GTP, possibly for ever.

It's been fun, informative, and upsetting in equal measure. And if the truth be told, I have enjoyed talking to you all.
But I may be back, possibly sometime next year.
So to the moderators, please don't cancel my membership!

Your local library (the one that is in the location you used to have) gives you free PC use including internet access.

Sometimes neighbours are stupid and don't put a password on their home wifi. You should check into that before saying good bye.

McDonalds has free wifi.

Annoyingly not all of them have, as I discovered to my cost.

Well not to my cost so much as to my vague annoyance, as I couldn't FaceTime my flatmate and perform a puppet show for him with my McNuggets.

The world is surely a less artistically-rich place because of it (

I suspect, that paying for a smart phone might turn out to be more expensive than having broadband.
Nope. Interwebz start off at about £8 a month, and you'll need BT line rental on top of that at about £10 for the cheaper options. I pay £18 a month for a Nokia 5800 with web/calls/text.

Well at the moment I can't afford anything more than £10 a month - altogether. Most people like TalkTalk do great deals like £6.99 a month, but you also have to pay for a line rental which ups the cost to just under £20.
The reason for my shoestring budget is that I am now in the position of having to run an expensive flat by myself due to a breakup in my relationship. I hadn't planned for this.

Have you tried getting a roommate(aka flatmate)?

Unless it's a 1 bedroom I don't see how it would be hard getting one, just make sure you like them.

Saving £10 (or less) a month by not having an internet connection is not going that much of a difference. If money is really that tight then rent a cheaper flat. I think you're being a bit melodramatic really.

Come back soon!

We know you'll be back :)

Sell some of your furniture that isn't really being used. I know for sure there are things in your place that doesn't have any use to you, so sell it to get some money out of it.

And accounts are not deleted even if they go inactive for a while. Good luck getting everything sorted.

I've been in the same boat since July 2008...
Pretty much can only afford to keep my Skylines road legal/registered/insured, buy food, pay power and of course pay the rent (over half my yearly earnings). So have gone without a landline phone or internet since then - kinda annoying really but woulda been completely broke if i did have the net.

Hopefully that will all change soon when my fiance moves in. :)

You're being naive. He's already stated internet is costing nearer £20, he can feed himself easily for a week on that. And you can't just rent a cheaper flat, contracts run for a set period.

Golfman, if her name is on the contract she needs to keep paying costs for the flat. That includes utility bills that are unavoidable (water, heating and reasonable electricity).

Making the assumption that he would still keep his land line and therefore the £10(ish) per month charge for that he would only be saving the cost of the broadband and he actually quoted TalkTalk's price of £6.99 for that.

Also the length of the lease for your flat is an agreement for rental charges but can be terminated with a months notice. Even if the landlord did try to enforce the length of the lease as most are for a 6 month period and he has been there for years there wouldn't be a problem, just give one months notice.

How about a 3G mobile broadband dongle? They're not very fast but I think you can get them for around £10 a month and you won't need a phone line.

If you were my neighbor would have no problem with that because
Sometimes neighbours are stupid and don't put a password on their home wifi.
I don't know where you live, but in my city is not difficult to find WiFi, libraries, hotels, offices, neighbors...

Do I really need to go to the ModCP for this?

Eh sorta, it depends on what you are doing on the network and whether you broke into it or if it's unsecure. Even if the password is '1234' or 'linksys' you are still breaking in.

I don't know how it is world wide but I checked into this about a year ago when my buddy brought up war driving. It looks to be in a grey area. I'd still avoid doing it due to the ethics of it but I don't think you could get in any real trouble if you got on a completely unsecure network and didn't mess with anything. Like I said, it's unethical though.

In the UK it's not "sorta". It is (under section 125 of the Communications Act [2003]). Golfman lives in the UK.

True, but I don't think Liz was condoning it. I think she was just saying that doesn't bother her as she is secure.

Easy big fella!

Given my post was deleted and I got a 10 point infraction I will repost my advice:

Ask your neighbors if you can "hijack" their wifi for temporarily doing basic tasks. You could pay them a few pounds, too. If I were your neighbor I'd take 5 bucks a month to let some guy check his email and forums and such. It would take virtually no bandwidth and could be monitored.
