For the longest time I was using a cheap computer desk for my wheel.

After upgrading from a DFGT to a G27, I started looking into other mounting options. I modified the desk, inverted the pedals and mounted the shifter a bit lower but it never quite worked out. It was almost unusable due to the desk moving around while trying to drive. It would either tip back at you, or slide away from you when under heavy braking. I found that I didn't even want to race due to the frustrations that came along with my desk. Also, due to it being so ugly, you do not get to see pictures of it post modifications.

I have been a big fan of Chilicoke's design, and wanted to do something similar. I threw ideas around for a couple of weeks and then started calling my welding buddies for time in their shops. I found a cheap seat ($159) from a local auto parts store, and started taking measurements in my kitchen. With my measurements in hand, I took my old rig over to a friends shop where we promptly went to work.

After a few short hours, I had a frame to mount things up to. However, when I got it home I found that some key measurements were neglected, leaving the steering wheel several inches too high, and the shifter too far back.

Tonight I took it to another friends house, and we went to work. We raised the seat a bit, and remounted the shifter then began finishing up the welds. I am happy with how it has turned out, even if I haven't got to fully test it yet.

Well done!

It's always nice to have such good friends.

I'm looking at making a similar, simple rig like yours. You did a great job btw. I was wondering what the total width is of your rig, and is it very heavy. Also what angle did you mount your pedals at, I've seen most at 45 degrees or so...thanks so much for your help... Jeff

This is an epic rig, so clean and simple, and its finish is spot on! also it looks very strong. nice job! I will def use this for some insperation.

Thank you Jeff. 👍
The width of the rig is 22", add another 5.5"-6" for the shifter, and it is just shy of 28" across. While the steel itself is not very heavy, you can pick it up with one hand easily, with the seat and G27 installed it is a two person job to bring it up stairs. The wheels make it easy for one person to roll out and "roll out". :sly: The pedals are a little steeper than 45 degrees, I don't have an exact measurement on the angle, as the elevation of the seat has a big impact on the angle of the pedals it will be up to you to see what feels good.

Thank you FN. 👍
I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Very tidy build indeed.........Gear sticks on the wrong side though ;)

Thank you blackblade. 👍
I am thinking about doing another design that can be disassembled, and then I could set it up where the shifter could be bolted to either side. I can't see myself driving with the shifter on the left very often though.

looks nice, good call with the back wheels

best to place it in front of a screen though :p

Thank you lunarwolf. 👍
The wheels make it very easy to roll it out to the living room, where my TV lives. :dunce: However, since I am married, I do not always get to take over the TV, on those days I have a long HDMI cable and some USB extensions to run the setup at my computer desk.

how much did it cost you?

Seat: $159, Checker Auto Parts
Steel: $40-50, a buddy had the materials at his shop. It is 1" square tubing and is very light and very strong.
Labor: $? As they are my friends it is tough to estimate. I would guess, aside from the design phase and other tests, It was like 5-6 hours of labor.

thanks alot man for the reply. I am thinking about 28 inches for mine too, so it'll fit through a 30 in doorway. I started mine the other day using 1 inch steel tubing, the heavier stuff but still not to bad. My seat is an aluminum Kirkey seat, it wouldn't be more than 4 or 5 lbs. total rig should be to heavy then if yours isn't. thanks again.
