I'm still stuck using auto. I have started using the paddles recently in online races some say its faster some say it's not a big enough difference to worry about.

Have you experienced drivers at using manual ever gone back to auto just to see if there is a difference in lap times? Also if there is a difference between auto and manual is there any difference between the h gate shifter and the paddles?

I do understand that going manual has the benefit of being more into the game but just curious about the other aspects above.

Thanks in advance.

It is definitely faster, I would say at least a second a lap depending on the car/circuit, once you get to used to it. You can brake quicker by using the engine to slow you down, you can stay in the right gear when going through a series of corners (Suzuka esses) with out the compuetr changing up for you. You get far more control.

Make sure you practice though before taking it online, otherwise you will get frustrated and revert to auto again. I use paddles by the way.

Manual is way way faster ;) You can also run out gears longer than with auto. I would practice manual for while... it not only adds to the immersion, its also quicker and more fun 👍

For example, manual gives you the possibility to go into 3rd gear exiting a difficult curve with a powerful car and/or on wet track : it's far easier to manage acceleration at 5.000 rpm than at 7.000.

H shifter is a lot more immersive, but not as efficient as paddle shifting. You lose precision after a while due to driving with one hand, and also you might misshift.

Definitely Manual is the way to go.

I have a DFGT so I can use paddles or the sequential shifter depending on which car I'm using. I only use paddles for cars that have them in real life. Most of the time I prefer to use the shifter as it's more fun to me.

I switch between paddles and the sequential shifter throughout the race. When straightening out or going into a really tight turn and I need to shift I just use the stick.

Well I would 100% say manual is faster and better over auto.
With manual you always know your in the correct gear for the corner meaning you can brake less and make later decisions also if your going round a corner too fast you can give it a down shift to take the weight off the transmission helping you salvage the corner.
But with auto your always in to high or too low of a gear which then means you have to use the brakes to get it to drop down a gear and I think that's stupid it irritates the living life out of me and costs me loads of time.

As for shifter over paddles I guess it boils down to what your comfortable with.
If GT5 had enabled the clutch on all cars and had made the clutch progressive instead of un-progressive I would have said that H pattern and the clutch were the best way to go, there are so many advantages to using a clutch but non of those advantages apply to GT5 due to its un-progressive clutch, so I would say that with GT5 no clutch and flappy paddles are the best.
I really do hope we see a progressive clutch in future GT5 updates.
