Well, for old time's sake, I unpacked my box of F1 race tapes. The randomly chosen tape (couldn't see the labels) was the 1994 Brazilian GP. Times have changed immensely in 8 years:
- Old starting lights procedure
- Slick tires
- Cars still sparked in the opening laps
- Wider cars, taller rear wings, bigger fron t wings. Cars looked better, overall.
- "Only" 16 races in '94
- Speedvision didn't exist, it was broadcast by ESPN at midnight, IIRC.
- First race for Panis, Frenten, and Verstappen...and Pacific and Simtek!
- First race to attempt to ban driver aids.
- Watching Shuey dominate Senna is harder to watch; Benetton evetually found cheating.
- Ligier and Lotus still racing.
- Cars actually follow closely behind another, somewhat tighter racing.
Other notes:
- No commercials had web site addresses!!! (Even computer-related ads were bereft of URLs)
- You could still buy an RX-7 in the US (only $399/mo. with $2,750/down)
- Mazda..."It just feels right"
- Apple computers apparently made a DOS-compatible Macintosh?!?
- My HP Laserjet 4 printer had a ad (yes, no website!)
- Videotape is a lousy archival method, but there was no other choice back then. (Hope you used SP, not EP/SLP.)
When it's all said and done, I don't wish to be back in the real world of 1994...2002 is fine with me, except for F1 racing.
