The world must be coming to an end. Now there's three Porsches I'd like to own.. 930 SC-RS, Cayman S and this.

I'm suprised it's not sold out immediately...

Because the process for ordering one seems really complicated.

According to Porsche, you can buy a 918 Spyder from any Porsche dealer anywhere in the world, provided they've signed a participation agreement with Porsche. Details are few and far between on what that agreement entails. What Porsche is saying, though, is how dealers who sign the agreement will order their cars.

Dealers who want to place an order for a 918 will have to submit an "Allocation Request Form." Porsche will reply with an "Allocation Response Form," which tells the dealer whether there's a car available for them. Once that's done, the dealer submits an order form, along with a $200,000 down payment. Porsche will respond with a confirmation and an estimated month for production.

The next step is another $200,000 deposit 12 months before the production date. The balance – $445,000 plus shipping, if you're counting – is due when Porsche says the car is done. Porsche says the car will not be shipped until it has been paid for in full. The reason, apparently, is that it won't be building any of the hyper-expensive 918s on speculation, and that each car needs to have an owner before it is built.

The balance – $445,000 plus shipping
According to Autocar, in the UK it will cost £672,000 pounds.
There will be also a special edition 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder with special details resembling 918 Spyder, available only for 918 owners. Those cars will cost £125,865 (coupe) or £133,553 (convertible).

This is not an unusual process for specialist cars of this type and it doesn't seem that complicated to me...

Customer signs a letter of intent
OPC sends a request for a car to Porsche HQ
Porsche HQ confirm if they are prepared to supply
Once supply has been confirmed and a supply date is given the customer needs to pay a deposit 12 months out
Balance paid on completion of the car

Porsche are trying to reduce the number of cars that go to speculators, which is far less likely to happy when the deposit is so big.

Sounds a bit like Toyota & the LF-A. Porsche may not want dealerships snatching these up & selling them over the market price.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I struggling to see how anyone could call the 918 ugly!

+1
It's one of the most beautiful cars (if not the single most beautiful car) recently made. Pure sex, in my opinion.

no the saying goes "beauty is in the eye of the beerholder", anyone thinking this is nice is probably drunk as hell lol

i can think of a lot of other cars recently made that are easily more nicer to look at that thing!

^ One of the 'every Porsche looks like a smashed bug' guys, I guess?
I definetely prefer the 918 over anything that came from, say, Italy in recent years. And yeah, that includes the 458 and the 8C

I think your opinion is in the minority when it comes to the 918's looks!

I'm not saying it the best looking car on the planet, but I've no idea how you could ever call it ugly... I'd be interested to hear what you think is a good looking car.

I believe that the hybrid will not be the big thing in Oil countries.

However this emissions rating of 70 g/km might make it one of the only (sorry Tesla, etc..) real sports cars you can take in the center of a German town or drive around in California.

The 918 would also qualify for free road tax in the UK and no congestion charge in London

It looks exactly like the prototype and therefore, carry a lot of futuristic styling cues. It is a bit controversial but I love it, the forms and proportions strongly resemble the Carrera GT.

No it will be a big thing in oil countries because of its gaudy price.

well honestly the real life version of it is nicer that the design/concept pics i originally posted of it, but its still far from anything special in terms of looks

today cars i think look nice would include: McLaren MP4-12C, Merc SLS, FT-86 II Concept, Koenigsegg Agera R, Lambo Aventador , Noble M600 and so on....

The Carrera GT looks much better IMO. The 918 is not as sleek looking, the rear end is clumsy and the wheels are horrible!

There's quite a big difference between 'ugly' and 'far from anything special' :)

Just goes to show how styling is a matter of personal taste... although I don't personally think the 918 styling is particularly special, of the cars you've listed I don't see anything I'd rate as significantly superior... the MP4 is bland beyond belief (though from what I've read it has incredible performance), the SLS is just outright ugly (and I mean proper FUGLY!), and the Noble and Koenigsegg are very ordinary. I've yet to decide if I like the Aventador... it's not really my cup of tea, but I recongnise a Lambourghini hero model has to be styled along those lines to be consistent with the companies heritage.

yeah i know thats why i said the pic of the actual car irl was a bit nicer than the concept design, the wheels are the main thing that stand out for me as being ugly.

very true, applies to next to everything, people will always have there own personal tastes that other people might have the complete opposite opinion on. i only said i liked teh looks of the cars i mentioned above, not "omfg that look totally awesome!" lol, sure there are other nicer cars made in past years, the Zonda would be one imo. I think its a lot more rare or less common that you will come across a new car who's design is 'simply beautiful' so to speak
