Important warning for avid paint and gear collectors who might be collecting multiples of the same paints and gear:
In addition to this, I also found out that like paint chips, gear gifted instead of earned will get listed separately instead of combined with identical gear, but unlike paint chips, they only will separate AFTER you change the gear in your profile and/or on your B-spec drivers, and thus the previously used gear is returned to your inventory... and listed separately if you happen to have been gifted that gear as well as earned it.
If the gear you have is all from gifts or you earned them all, then they wont be listed separately if you have multiples, and instead will be properly combined.
In addition to this, if you try to delete either identical gear that is listed separately so that you don't have multiple listings, you must delete both.
If you try and delete just one, after you leave the menu and then go back, it will transfer the same gear from the other listing to the one you thought you had deleted.... which is also like what happens when you delete multiple paint chip listings.
