HI there.
I drew up a cockpit idea and I started it today, only started though.

But as its my first proper cockpit, (have wheelstand Pro) I just want to hear improvements that can be made. I do have experiance of bulding out of wood and some out of metal but since there's alot of wood lying around I'm going to use it.

I haven't a seat yet but Theres alot of scrapped cars down the road so I know I can Just pull one out for free.

Here's the draw-up.

I also have a G27 and I know The shifter/hydraulic handbrake mount isnt on the sketch, but thats going to be after everything else so I know what my options are if it changes in any way.

All useful information will be greatly appreciated 👍

Oh and I know it looks like ita painted very badly, but thats just the way it came out. I actually put a good bit of paint on it.

Sorry. I just dew it up in bed last night. Pencil&paper FTW! :P

I just want a simple enough cockpit, not the ones that go on for weeks.

If you have at least a router and a drill, I don't see it lasting for more than 2 days given you have all materials and planned out the dimensions. 2 days tops with painting, or just few hours without paint.

I don't have a router, and the drill battery is dead. The proper drill isn't staying on :P

I have a circular saw (called that?) a hand saw for tight things, and alot of stips of wood about 5 inches wide. Oh and some 5 plywood but I don't really want to use it.

Have the floor at 45 degrees as you won't have enough movement in your ankles to work the pedals properly if its flat unless you have the seat very high but it will feel like your driving jeep then all the time :sly:

My seat is mounted right down at the base of the frame so I'm only sitting maybe 6 inches off the floor and pedals are more or less in the same line so its very comfortable.

Although I inverted my pedals and mounted the three of them to the frame with a few different holes in it to move them up and down and side to side so its abit like an adjustable bulkhead mounted pedal box :)

Making the handbrake will be very easy. All you have to do really if you want a quick job is bolt and old handbrake from a scrapper onto piece of wood on the side of the frame and use the handbrake light switch to wire into the G27

I recently noticed that 5x2.5 wood is too heavy (oops :P)

If I made it all out of 5ply would it be strong enough not to move alot?

Your built will give you the same work as the one on the link (plus if I did something like that at home my wife would kick me out with it)... in my country you can have all the peaces drawn in a paper and they cut them to the exact shape and size (with little extra cost on the wood store or whatever) all you have to do is paint (if you want it painted) and glue/screw it...

Serves me right for trying to help someone with what I thought is one of the best looking self made wooden cockpits with full instructions and cost on the net

Well I suppose, but I don't feel like going 10 miles for somebody to do the same as me for money...

I've got a huge sheet of 5 ply plywoood so I'll draw something up again.

EDIT: Ok I'm now getting somewhere with my cockpit. I'm using a (kind of) closed enclosure, and am starting to like it. 👍

Will update soon! :)

This is my new idea. I've test fitted it aswell (the front part) and it seems good. Will start to put it together during the week if I have the time, and then get a seat mounted up.

5x2.5 or 2.5x5 in the US is in fact heavy. From my experience, 2x4(US) is sufficient enough. Personally, I went from 2x4 to 2x2 (got lazy hand sawing 2x4 prior to buying my power saws) and nothing has changed really other than the weight. As for sturdiness, nothing changed. As long as you know where to put wood for reinforcements then you should be fine.

As for the new design, I think it looks better as it is more cleaner looking. I suggest if you haven't done the reverse mount mod for the pedals, you should do it now.

When I first built my cockpit, I haven't done the mod as I didn't want to void the warranty. Well last night and with only 2 months left on the warranty, I finally did the mod. Taking the pedals apart was too easy, but learning that I have to make adjustments on the rig was a lot of work. I had to adjust it so I can have a good angle for the pedals which is a lot of pain in the 🤬, especially when you're working on it alone.

Sooo, if you haven't done it and plans to do it in the near future, just try to do it now.

Thanks for the advise, and I have thought about inverted pedals, but I only got my G27 in July.... Maybe if I see another spare set cheap I'll do it.

Would the G25 pedals fit the G27?

Ok Ok...

So I got the front part dont. All that's really left of this bit is to make shifter and handbrake brackets, and clean it all up. (covered in dust and bird poop :D)

And its not sitting on poop. its sand/hay.

mightn't be an update tomorrow as I'll be a bit busy with other things, so it will probably be the next day..
