Unrecognized USB device error

I am trying to do a game save onto a portable USB stick. At first when I tried I got the unrecognized USB device error message. I was told the USB stick needed to be fat32 format for the ps3 to recognize. So I formatted the USB stick to fat32 and tried again. I got the same message unrecognized USB device. Anyone else ever encounter this? Anything else I can try?
 
Try formatting the drive in the PS3 from the XMB, without anything (read: games) running in the background.
 
If you squeezed and forced it in, it may be broken, that happened to me and I got the endless popping up screen of having to reformat it, but it was a cheap $10-20 plastic thing so I bough a different one an it worked

How or where do I do that? If the drive isn't recognized how can I re format it through the ps3?

I am sure it isn't broken I tried using it in my laptop and reformatted it just for good measure and it still did not work.
