It's harsh considering there's such a large demograph of users, a handful of which don't understand forums let alone BBcode.

I am tired of seeing people quote a post with a handful of large images in threads that are intended for posting images such as photomode galleries, and the funny/amazing pics thread (especially when it's the post right after or on the same page). It uses more bandwidth, it makes loading times longer (regardless of how fast your computer may be), more scrolling for everyone, and IMHO is inconsiderate to an extent.

I propose that warnings or something alike a reminder to keep image quoting to a minimum if not out altogether. 0 point warnings can be issued when user continually quotes large (and/or large number of) images. Further neglect can result in a small infraction. If one wants to respond to a pic or video, they can spot out the or [video tag] in quoted post and erase it; it's not a lot of trouble to go through.

Though I don't see it making its way in GTP anytime soon, I did want to bring your attention to it so that you the reader may also cut down on being lazy and not doing a little extra work. Thanks for reading.

It depends, IMO. If the picture/video is from several pages away, then I suppose it would be fine to quote it. However, if the post in question has like a thousand images, then the person quoting it should only quote one picture. I'm not sure if everyone notices this, but the little white speech box beside a name in a quote will direct you to that post.

See if you remove the img tag of an image, you get the image URL. If someone wanted to know what that person was responding to, they can click on the link themselves.

As Penguin said, if its from a couple pages back and it's not massive (fnar) then quoting it should be fine, but it there's a wallpaper sized image commonly seen in the Awesome and Cool photo thread then it's a waste of time loading for those with slower computers. Especially if the OP is two post up.

We could do a similar thing to notifying people about grammar:
First offence gets a friendly reminder from a fellow member (seen it lots in the GT5 section) saying "At least make an effort - makes the site look cleaner :)"
Next is generally a less-friendly reminder from a mod.
Third is an official warning from a mod.
Last is an infraction (after how many warnings - I don't really know).

Happy 12k post as well, Andy 👍

I'll remove unnecessary image quotes if I see them but I don't think we should be handing out warnings for it.

Can't agree more-with the folks like me with crappy internet, it really is annoying.

It shouldn't matter how many times it's quoted though. I believe that once the image has loaded once, your browser will just get any future quoted copies from it's cache.

It's more annoying having to scroll past it, again...

Another forum I visit has a neat little feature that automatically converts all quoted images to "Click to see the quoted image" texts. It's not vB based though so I don't know if the same could be applied here.

Sorry, that was too ironic to miss. :sly:

The first time you load the page, the browser doesn't understand the image is coming from the same location, so it does indeed take extra time to load. After the image is cached, it doesn't take any discernible amount of additional time.

It's annoying, but only if the same people constantly quote 10 pics just to comment on one is it worth pointing out...it's more "bad form" than anything else. I think it's just annoying when people constantly quote an entire wall of text to point out one tiny thing in the post. I'll use the old ^ (caret) to sometimes refer to something which otherwise doesn't need quoting, if it's just above me, and I'm on the GTP-app. Again, I can't imagine handing out infractions to people for that.

Some people are just new to the ways of the Internet message board, especially one who's demographic includes ages 13-73.

Ah. But yes it is annoying scrolling past the same picture 9000+times...

This is, fortunately, one of those rare behavioral problems that can (and best) be solved by software. It is an annoying problem, and one I hope to get around to fixing here some day.

Perhaps there is a way for the software to pick up any IMG tags and that sit in between quote tags and remove them by default.

I find that annoying as well, but I don't think it's infraction-worthy. Perhaps we can deploy the software Jordan mentioned that can reduce this quoting trend. Something like AOS' concept.

I don't understand why image quoting as a whole should be disabled when the mods can (and do) intervene when people get obnoxious about it. Am I missing something?

Image/video quoting just ruins bandwidth & wastes thread space. For me I replace it with a short description of whatever the element is, or the word *snip*.

How does it cause bandwidth issues? If it has been loaded, it's been loaded. It isn't loaded separately each time it shows up. I can understand being annoyed with scrolling past images, but just make it a soft-rule in the Funny Pic thread if it is too much of an issue.

And again, this just smells of "punish everyone because certain people abuse it" even though the ones who abuse it have already been being told off.
