Word of warning: this is not the place to discuss your crack habit or any illegal drug use. Nor should it lead to any site rule breaking!

Neither is it expected that a mass opinionated debate between those for and against smoking breaks out. If that was the case this would be in the Opinions forum.

Do you smoke cigarettes? Or cigars perhaps? Partial to a pipe or maybe a bit of chew? what's the smoking culture like in your country?

Over here in China smoking is pretty much a hard thing to avoid. We don't have public smoking bans but it is expected one exercise restraint when on public transport or in certain places which are public. But strangely not hospitals.

To meet somebody here it's as common to be handed a cigarette as it is to shake hands. Most people smoke and even if you don't, it's polite to take the cigarette offered and just put it away somewhere to dispose of later.

I'm also a fan of pipes and cigars but rarely smoke them as they are more of a luxury item and I never seem to find the time to sit down and have a good puff over the course of a few hours.

So how about? Let's discuss!

Breathing in the smog in the cities makes smoking less of a health problem to consider I guess 💡

^Lulz

I smoked around a 20's package a day, now down to 10-15. I plan to stop completely by summer, downgrading a few fags a months, to get the body accustomized to it.

Been smoking for 10-15 years, too many. Really want to stop. And stop smoking cigarettes is way harder than pot, which I stopped from one day to another without problems...

So no pot anymore,
no alcohol
and soon no cigs.

Trying to get a more healty lifestyle...

I also smoke and about a 40 gram packet of rolling tabacco in approx. a week and a half.
Already been smoking less and less, also decided to stop this year after approx 15 years of smoking.
Regularly I smoke about 7 cigs a day.

I started smoking when I was about 15 years old. Was up to about 30 per day in 2007 when I called my sister and told her she should come and take me to the hospital as I had really bad pains in my stomach. She knew I must have been in pain if I was going to go to the hospital. I smoked one walking into the ER. The doctors checked me out and said it was my gall bladder, gave me shots for pain and admitted me, removal the next morning. A nurse came to the room at about 5 PM and said she wanted to put a patch on me, I told here I didn't need a patch I needed more morphine as I was still in pain and hadn't sleep in 2 days I could live without the patch.I haven't smoked a cigarette since, it took almost 6 months for the smell to leave the house. I had a cousin start to come over to watch NASCAR, he was a heavy smoker and the smell started to return to the house so I banned him from smoking inside and put up "NO SMOKING" signs in the house. It doesn't bother me to be around people while they smoke, I have quite several times before but this is the longest. The only time I get a craving is when someone lights one with "matches" something about the sulfur and tobacco combination.

I smoked for ten years, and a month ago today is when I bought my last pack of cowboy killers. I've been getting chronic headaches and intense mental fogginess since I stopped - indeed it's been incredibly hard - but I feel better and have saved over $200 so far. I've tried to quite before and failed, but this time just feels different. I want it, I don't want to smoke.

I didn't start smoking until I was 18 (the age you should've known better) and first it was more a casual thing, a few cigarettes a day but it went 'out of control' when I started living on my own a short while later, I soon smoked almost a pack a day and I still do.
And apart from one occasion, I never really seriously tried to stop but increasingly thinking about giving it another go, still enjoy smoking though unfortunately but I do acknowledge I'm addicted.

So far the annoying habit stuff, my current brand is nothing special, just plain old Marlboro which I always come back to, sometimes I smoke Benson&Hedges (Gold) and I've tried Gauloises several times amongst a few other less well known brands but Marlboro is stocked everywhere and I like their taste.
I've also tried cigars many times but when you're used to inhaling through your lungs I often make the mistake of doing that too with cigars.

As for smoking in public places, a few years ago that was banned here too although there seem to be loopholes or exceptions made since for small cafés and such.
At first it was more strict, resulting in some genius creating a 'church for smokers', basically a pub allowing their customers to smoke on religious grounds (think he even invented an entire religion for it).

I've been smoking since I was 17. I used to smoke lambert and butler but the skyrocketing price of cigarettes in the uk convinced me to start rolling my own. My favourite brands are amber leaf and golden Virginia. Rolling can be a bit of a pain at times. Especially if it's raining and you have no choice but to roll cigarettes outdoors.

I have no idea how many I smoke a day. At one point, I'd smoke around 30 (yes, 30) lambert and butler per day. That was back when I'd go to the pub every day, and smokers know that you don't feel "the burn" when you have a few drinks in you. I cut back to around 20 per day before I started rolling. When I first started buying tobacco, I'd go through a 50g pouch in around 8 days. Nowadays, a pouch will last me around 2.5 -3 weeks. Buying rolling tobacco in Japan is a bit of a pain as you need to go to a specialist store. The actual tobacco is reasonably priced, however, the filters and papers are far more expensive than they are in the uk. In Japan, the smoking laws differ by area. Most of the time, you have to find a designated smoking area. These can be few and far between. Especially in the more upmarket areas. You can smoke in most restaurants and bars, although each place has it's own rules and some places have smoke-free hours.

Hopefully, 2013 will be the year I finally give up smoking. I just don't enjoy it any more. I miss the days when that first one in the morning would give me a nice buzz. I occasionally gag while smoking too. It will be tough for me to give it up, but with a wife to think about and our plans for the future, I'm running out of excuses.

Edit: As a nice incentive to help me quit, my wife said I can go out and spend a few grand on a nice Les Paul when I manage to kick the habit. There are few things I enjoy more than plugging a Les Paul into an amp and playing.

I've been smoking for about 35 years now, and have seen many changes over the years here in Canada. At one point in time, there were ashtrays in stores for the patrons, nowadays, your choices are extremely limited in comparison. Outside, and only in certain places. Times have changed.

As for myself, I know exactly when I'll stop smoking, shortly after I'm cremated...:sly:

Have a good one

I have tried smoking but it never really caught on with me.

I spent one night on a college trip to Berlin with 3 other guys in my room coughing all night because I smoked a Marlboro that evening. Everyone hated me that night. :guilty:

I stopped smoking last week after a good 20 years at it.
I must say it hasn't been as tough as I feared it would be - I've been using (2mg) gums and some vile microtab things which you dissolve on your tongue and they seem to work reasonably well at overcoming the worst cravings. I tried patches before and although they did work pretty well they made me feel incredibly unwell at times (going to work at 8am on a Monday morning feeling like you're totally drunk/high isn't as fun as it sounds, remarkably)

I'm tracking my progress with some app I got on my phone which provides a nice little distraction/encouragement showing how much you've saved and how many cigs you haven't smoked along with health benefits etc.

Strangely I found that the worst moments are about 3/4 through a meal - I start thinking "yep, a cigarette would be great after this", something I never noticed before.
Also, I'm definitely more imapatient and irritable, especially when forced to wait for things (buses, girlfriend, loading times etc). I'm constantly hungry, but my digestive system is behaving oddly; and my sleep pattern is disturbed and irregular.

On the plus side, I can now succesfully open my mouth and utter intelligible, fully-formed words before 9am (rather than just grunting and croaking like an asthmatic pensioner), I can wear gloves in cold weather (without having to constantly take them off and stow them to light/smoke one), I don't have to keep going outside in the rain/wind/snow/smog to have a cigarette, I do feel generally more mentally alert and I'm drinking far more alcohol to make up for it (joking of course - a nice drink makes me want a smoke even more!).

So it's so far, so good - can't say how well I'll be doing in another week or two but I'm determined to stick to it.

I smoked a lot when I was around 13/14, I got involved in the wrong crowd due to a band I was in at the time and they all smoked like chimneys, it was mainly the social side of it that attracted it to me. Still, I haven't been smoking regularly for a year or two now and I really don't want to go back. Sure, I'll have the occasional one during band practice or when I'm out with friends (not often) but I don't think I'll be going back to how I was. I'll write a response to this in a few years from now and see where I am then.

No, it adds health problems. Breathing smog and smoke is probably worse then breathing smogs without smoking.

I started smoking when I was 17, so I've been smoking for nearly 35 years. I used to smoke ready rolled cigarettes, but for the last 10 years I've smoked roll ups. We nip over to Belgium once a year to get my years supply of tobacco. A 50g pouch of Amber Leaf here is around £16, in Belgium it's less than £5. Even taking into account petrol money and the ferry, I still save around £1,300 a year that way.

I have no problem having to smoke outside. I would never have smoked in a restaurant next to other people eating anyway. I don't like other peoples smoke while I'm eating, so why should they suffer mine? If we visit the home of non smoking friends or relatives, I will expect to go outside to smoke, but if they visit us they have to accept that I WILL smoke in my own home. The only exception is if a young child is with them. I'm quite prepared to step out into the garden then. I'm more than happy to be reasonable, but I did tell a couple to 'do one' not long ago. If you see a person sat at a table outside, having a cigarette, don't go and sit on that table and then complain about the smoking!

Well. I smoke probs about 5 a day, yeah not good I know. The problem I have is that my Sixth Form has a smoking area and that is just where loads of people hang out, it is just so nice to go there and have a smoke.

I'm starting to question why I smoke (esspecially so while writing this post actually), however I really can't be bothered with the pain to quit.

At the moment I roll some (really badly however just about smokable), but also always keep myself a couple of ciggarettes for when I can't be bothered to roll.

I'm a smoker, but up until recently I wouldn't smoke at all during the daytime, only at night after I've had a drink. About a month ago I started working an auto parts counter (I was in retail sales about 7-8 years ago) and I had completely forgot what it was like working with the public. Now I can't wait for my 10 minute break to come up so I can go outside and suck down at least 2 cigs. It's back to the point where I want to smoke on my days off now... actually, I'm stepping outside right now.

Non-smoker here.

I have to say that it's hard to watch the government and society vilify all of you smokers in the US. It's amazing how your basic liberties keep getting trampled just because of a personal decision.

Never have smoked, never will.

I remember ages ago me and some of my friends helping a girl at my school go cold turkey once... It was actually quite scary how addicted she had become!

Now I am remembering that girl. Now I feel sad...

I smoke everyone in a while, usually to celebrate. Reds are the preferred cig, and I'll take any cigar I can get.

I've had about 15 to 20 cigarettes I'd say in my life. My first one was last year, had a few of them(over the space of months) and decided I didn't like them, would maybe have one or two if I'm drunk but I really don't want to start smoking regularly, because as far as I see it, it screws over your health, makes you smell bad and robs all your money.

Weirdly its legal to smoke them but not to buy them at my age.:odd:

A cigarette is really nice when you've had a few/lot though.

I've never smoked.

Ironically because my parents second hand smoke made me absolutely disgusted by the idea of having that "stank ass" taste in my mouth. I really don't understand the initial appeal.

I only smoke one or two cigars a day. That's it. I have a few favorites I like but will smoke a wide varity of cigars brands and lines. Any other stogie smokers here?

Current Favorites:

Flor De A. Allones
Partagas (1845, Regular and Black)
Henry Clay
Mr. B Candela

Have never smoked and don't intend to start as its killed a few family members, i work in a pharmacy and we run a program to help quit. I always wonder why people would decide to suffer the ill health from smoking in the first place (just to be clear im not judging anyone), i feel really bad everytime a certain OAP lady comes in and has a deeper voice than me.

I used to smoke cigarettes, cigars, and even an occasional pipe. I really started to smoke regularly when I was in the UK and it just seemed like the thing to do. When I got back to the states I continued but it declined until I turned 21 and started going to bars, then it went back up to a more regular frequency. When Michigan banned smoking from public places I really toned my smoking way down since it had transformed into something I only did when I drank. Now I don't smoke at all and can't because I work in healthcare (most healthcare systems in Michigan won't allow you to work for them if you smoke) and I have asthma.

I still get a craving when I get really stressed out or when I'm out having a few drinking, but I've been able to control it without any issue.

Depends on how good the cigar is and how it's been rolled.

I've currently got a pack of these here but haven't smoked one since September. I was saving them for festive celebrations but forgot to take them.

th

I often have my morning smoke even before I drop my meds. Get out of bed and don't even get dressed until I've had my first cigarette of the day.

I actually smoke less at home than when I'm working. On my day off I will not always get close to finishing a box of fags but during a work day I'll easily get through 20.

Well, work is always a tad bit stressful with the kids and targets to reach!

I'm assuming it all depends on the ingredients of the cigar and how tightly it is rolled determines the length of time it takes for it to smoke?

I smoke the occassional cigarette but not extremely frequently. I do worse things than this though :scared:

Been smoking since 16 here but I stopped for a long time because of sports. Now I smoke 4-5 a day. It relieves stress to me. I smoke quite a few cigars too. It's like a respect thing(much like Shem was saying) especially around the stock brokers, CEOs ect.

Now has anyone here tried an electric cigarette? I just got one the other day for $20. I got it so it doesn't stink the house or the car up. I like it but I feel kinda gay smoking it. How do you guys feel about those?
