So how many people here have had their wisdom teeth removed? I was told today by my dentist that I will have all 3 of mine removed (that right...I only have 3:odd: ) so for those of you that have gone through such an ordeal, what can I expect? how long does it last? should I try sedation dentistry? or just coment on your experiences.
thanks in advance guys:D

My wisedom teeth grew in such a way they they didnt need a dentist to "bring out the pliers".

That was good luck on my behalf, but I chipped a tooth two weeks ago eating an icecream cone, which was rather bad luck :(

Good luck at the dentist 👍

I have had no problems with mine either, but from what I've heard it can be pretty painful, especially afterwards the surgery.

How did you manage that? I chipped a tooth last year, but that was banging it off the side of a metal-cased computer.

My wisdom teeth are behaving themselves properly, and are thus still in-place.

My wife had all hers taken out four years ago. She had a general anaesthetic, and couldn't eat solids for a week. After that she looked like she'd been in a fight for about another week.

Basically, you're looking at a major operation, lots of drugs, and lots of pain.

Sorry!

I haven't seen a dentist in about 6 years and my teeth are fine, too bad you have to go, try gas though, it's like pot but a dotor gives it to you.

I cant explain. I had just finished eating the cone when I ran my tongue over my top teeth. One of them felt a bit rough and when I looked in the mirror, the very tip of my one incisor had vanished, apparently down my throat.

I filed a rough area away with a nail file and we're back in business. A bit scarey though, considering it was a cone.

I had mine pulled out a couple of years ago because there wasn't enough room for them to grow in properly.

It was a relatively painless experience due to the local anestezia and the vicodan I took for a few weeks after that. The operation itself took about an hour and a half. Could have been shorter, but the dentist had to break a tooth to get it out. That took some time.
But all in all, the operation was painless and you only really feel some slight pressure on your jaw as the doctor does his work.

I doubt many dentists will put you completely under when extracting your wisdom teeth, but you really don't need to be completely sedated.
I loath the dentist, but having my teeth pulled wasn't such a tramatic experience as I thougth it was going to be.
The following weeks are what suck the most. You're going to have 3 large holes in your mouth that are going to ache a bit. Eating food is going to be difficult as chewing will be an issue. Food also loves to get stuck in the holes where your teeth used to be. If you don't clean them out regularly, the food starts to rot and will give you some horrendous breath. :yuck:

You're gonna be just fine. :)

thanks guys,
the ony problem I'm worried about is that the root of one tooth is very close to the main nerve in the jaw, and any mistakes and i could have no feeling in my jaw:eek: and my dentist also was talking about somthing, saying that one of the roots may have put a hole in my sinus (??) and that might be a problem i guess....and does anyone find it strange that i only have 3 wisdom teeth?? my upper right side is just missing it....:odd: (is that normal??...lol)

I've got 1 wisdom tooth coming in right now and I gotta say, it's damn annoying. Whenever I eat rice, the grains always get lodged all the way back there and it's a ***** to get them out :irked:. Not sure yet if I'll be keeping my wisdom teeth. This one feels a bit crooked but there's no inconveniences...yet.

I've had 3 teeth pulled between the age of 7 and 10...each was because the dentist fudged up with the fillings and got the wrong tooth putting me through excruciating pain for almost a month till they scheduled another appointment. After each tooth was pulled, it wasn't bad. A lot of bleeding for an hour or so followed by not being able to eat solids for a few hours. After that, I just had this weird hole in the side of my mouth where the tooth used to be. Then a month or 2 later, the tooth would grow in but with a funky pointy shape that makes me think of 2 incisors sitting side by side

Does anyone here have an ingrown tooth? I've got an extra tooth growing underneath and between 2 of the teeth inside of my mouth. I'm fairly sure that'll stay or not because it hasn't caused any problems since the dentist found it 2 years ago.

Your sinus is a hole.
Teeth are really susceptible to genetic impurities and mutations, which helps explain why virtually everyone has moderately different dental structure, and why most of us have some kind of oddity. Like my teeth, one had an air pocket in it that didn't show itself until I was fifteen. My front two are bent inward, too, but that's from concrete, not chromosomes.

I'm absolutely terrified of the dentist, man; I'd pass out before antiseptic kicked in. But good luck with the surgery. I wonder if that means you're going to drool uncontrollably for an hour and a half...

Haven't had my wisdom teeth pulled out, but I had four others pulled out about 6 months ago (the ones right behind the incisors, or canines, or whatever they're called). I was knocked out though, so no pain during the procedure. The puss-like* stuff that comes out of the holes for the next week or so though is just nasty.

Because I had those teeth pulled out, and my braces are pulling the rest of the teeth forward to meet my front teeth, I might not need my wisdom teeth pulled out. I hope.

*I originally typed in *****, but it got asterisked.

I had all 4 taken out a couple of months ago. Like boom said, the procedure itself wasn't so bad thanks to the local anesthesia. 3 of them came out without much of a hassle; except for one, he had to struggle a bit with one of 'em. Then comes the sewing, which felt really weird.

Hopefully, you'll get the kind of thread that dissolves after a few days (which is what I got). If not, you'll have to come in later, once you've healed, to get it taken out; which I've heard hurts like a b*tch! The first 2-3 days after will be hell, but once it's all over you'll be glad you did it.

Good luck man.

I had all four impacted and removed at once when I was 18. They knocked me out for it. The recovery was painful and long. Good luck.

Well I'm one of the fortunate ones.I've never had to get mine pulled, and considering I'm 26 I don't think I ever will(Knock on wood),but I have known a lot of people who have had them pulled, and the drugs you get for the pain are pretty dang strong;)

I had them out about half a year ago. YOu can expect numbness and pain in chewing harder items for the next week or so, and after about 2 weeks your mouth will have its full range of motion back without pain (although a little way ago I was flossing and I got an unusual amount of blood from that area, so I'm thinking I should have it checked). So yeah, have fun eating apple sauce, soup, pasta, yogurt, and ice cream for the next couple days.

I had mine removed last summer before I started my final year of High School. The surgery itself wasn't that bad because I was unconcious(sp?) but when I got home I nearly passed out when I tried to change the gauss pads for my mouth. That was excrutiating. Other than that I was fine because I was on painkillers for about two weeks. Eating was not fun though.

I had 3 good'un'healthy molars pulled out about a year ago now so I could have my braces. One came out in 7 pieces, another 5 and the other 4 I think. I had a bucket load of local anaethestic injected into me and was numb for the rest of the day.
Has anyone ever heard of a dentist 'cutting fibres' in you mouth that supposedly twist your teeth around? I had pretty twisted teeth before and they want to stop my teeth rotating once my braces are coming out.

At the age of 4 my brother had 9 teeth out under General anastetic (sp?) after they became all roted. It was a mixture of fruit juices, yogurts and inheritence of my motehrs bad teeth who had a similair problem as a child.

[Professor Frink voice] Yes, after the pinching and the yanking and the hurting! [/Professor Frink voice]

My wisdom teeth didn't help throughout my tests in high school so I had them yanked out a year after I finished school.

In all honesty though I did have all 4 teeth pulled out. I could've had only the bottom ones removed since the x-rays showed they could make a mess trying to come out. The top ones didn't look like they would create any trouble, but the dentist told me there was a possibility they'd get crooked as well over time, with my luck I didn't want to chance going through the procedure twice.

I haven't had to have my wisdom teeth removed yet. Right before I had my braces put on, the dentist did remove four of my teeth, though.

I chipped my two front teeth on my knee when I was about 12. I kicked a tree hard and my head swung forward and I hit my face on my knee. I have the dumbest injuries.

When I got mine removed, I was not too concerned as the roots of the teeth had not dug in very far. So I went to the Oral Surgeon's, and got very heavily drugged. Within about 30 seconds or less after having the painkillers injected into me, I was out cold. I woke up maybe a half hour later, not knowing what was going on, but feeling quite tired. It was all over by then, so I was then helped to the car by my dad and the surgeon since I could not keep my balance. For the rest of that day, I was partly sleeping, partly watching TV, and eating tons of scrambled eggs. It was actually quite an enjoyable day as all I did was sleep pretty much. The pain was almost non-existent then and for the week or so when there is swelling.

One more thing, when you need to clean out the holes where the teeth were removed, be very thurogh (sp?), because I got two infections that way, so they had to get rid of the infection by popping the swelled area in the gums and simply pushing out all the pus (very painful).

 wow, thats almost as bad as dislocating your arm playing "red-rover" with a really large girl (she was huge...i swear!)

I only had two (the other two never came in) and it was terrible.

I got them out at the dentist, he broke out the pliers. He injected my jaw with enough novacaine (sp?) to kill a horse. It's a good shot where he sticks it in nice and far and then grabbs your cheek with his hand and yanks it around while injecting. Very nice.

Then, after my jaw was numb he went in with basically a pair of pliers and twisted my tooth from side to side. It had to fight to keep my head from being torqued. After a little while of twisting I could feel the tooth bend more than my head was. After some more disgusting bending it came out. I could see my tooth and the blood reflected in the dentist's goggles.

Then he did the other tooth likewise. No pain during the procedure but I did pass out afterward when I tried to get up. Yes that's right I passed out (I don't like blood).

So the procedure was terrible.

The next day or so was spent just trying not to swallow blood. I packed gause (sp?) into the holes to catch the blood, but its hard not to get it on your pillow when you sleep. The pain wasn't bad. I think I was on pain medicine for the first day or two, I don't remember very well.

Once it stopped bleeding and aching (I think it was like 4 days), I was fine.

I'd recommend getting them surgically removed before they come in. That way they won't move your other teeth around and you won't have to deal with your dentist yanking them out. I've heard that some people have a very easy time of it when they're removed surgically. My sister, on the other hand, has problems with anistesia (sp?) so she threw up first thing after having them out - I suppose that calls for a gause replacement. :)

Anyway have fun. Sometimes it's a nightmare, other times it's cake.

Edit: I didn't get infections in the holes, but then again, I didn't eat scrambled eggs right afterward either. It was pretty much icecream and oatmeal for two days.

had all 4 yanked out senior year in high school. procedure wasnt too bad, teeth wasnt too crazy so no oral surgeon for me, the regular dentist handled it fine. plenty of yanking and twisting tho. then he used pliers for bottom ones. healing was a ***** tho. spent the next two days in hell. i do hope you like the taste of blood cus itll be bleeding for a while. by the 4th day i was about to gag cus i was so sick of the taste of blood in my mouth. eating was a real pain in the ass too. nothign but yogurt, mashed potatoes and apple sauce. even talking was hell. for the next month my cheeks were swollen and my friends nick-named me "chipmunk" during that time. oh yeah the cheeks will prob get discolored too (from bruising) so have fun with yellow, green and purple cheeks

Thanks, Klos – I haven't honestly laughed at anything I've seen the net so hard in so long.
