Well, some background I guess first. I have at two 1987 MR2s, both projects. One is called the "red" one, and its a fixer upper I got for 500 dollars that didn't run, had some issues interior wise, mostly with sun damage and just the color brown in a red car. Its been put on hold temporally while my other project, the black MR2, gets its work in. What work? An engine swap... replacing the damaged 20V Silver Top with a good one. So, on to some pictures and the likes.

To start with, the Red MR2, on hold. This car also sat for 7 years or so, and now runs. I'm currently redoing the entire interior...

Still have a few things to hook up before the car can drive again, such as the drive axles... but the engine does start and sounds good. I'll get some more stuff up when its completely put back together, maybe a video of it at the autocross event this upcoming weekend.

No turbo cause I am lazy... and thats good for about 190 HP at the moment...

BTW, could a mod move this.. I just realized this is not the "Photo" area I intended.. would be better off in "Automotive." Just kinda saw the word "photography" (give me a break, its late) :dopey:

The old MR2s are the only ones that does it for me.. The later models got heavy and weird looking..

There is a very nice Mk2 MR2 here in Auckland, equiped with a boot mounted intercooler and big top mount turbo. Good for 600hp and no traction.. :D

But I'd rather have 140-150Bhp and 1000kgs than 220Bhp and 1250kgs...

The Miata I got to drive this weekend did VERY well with 125 at the wheels !... (and a 1000kgs...)
 
But the black one is more at 190 HP and 950 kg at this point ;) If not 900 kg, I've pulled some heavy things off (AC and the steel bumper guards... which are useless from the low ride height :p)

And I'm wondering how this thread hasn't been moved...

190 and 900... Mmmmm.. VERY tasty !...

Btw.. You _should_ move it to Hobbies... - or cars in general ?... You can do so yourself with the admin tools in the lower right corner....

Cool my friend in HS also had a black MKI with the SC rims. He drives a WRX now but he loves the car and wont sell it. :p
 
Nice :D The new motor looks really sweet. How did the throttle bodies get broken like that on the old motor?

I've got an '87 NA. Did a motorswap last summer because the original engine exploded... at the time I didn't have the experience to do a fancy swap like yours, so it just got one of the 7rib motors.
 
Well, I know now that I can move it. Other forums I'm use to dealing with don't let you move it yourself :p

The ITB got damaged from over torque I believe. The people that did the previous swap over torqued most everything it seems... tad to happy with an impact hammer :indiff:

Thursday should be when this will all be together... probably gonna have to ditch my advanced Black and White photo clas that day... oh bummer :p
 
I prefer the Mk II, but I appreciate the cost limitations of fixing up old cars (:

That poor red MR2 was badly mistreated.
 
Yeah, it was...

The MkII is nice looking, and is actually what got me into MR2s, but after learning about its greater curb weight compared to the MR2 AW11 and the MR2 Spyder, its lowest on the list of MR2s for me... AW11, MR2 Spyder, then the SW20.
 
mmm 20v quad throttle goodness. one of my mates has one of these, with the stock 4ag, 70hp at the wheels. i raced him a couple of weeks ago and we were dead even :D

i found the inlet system of the aw11 interesting. into the boot, behind a panel, into the rear, over the other side, back into the boot, behind a panel, then to the side air intake. i can see why guys put those ugly snorkels on them. why not just swap the filler cap over to the other side

speaking of, love how the petrol tank is beneath the armrest. and you look like you're in for a fun time filling the radiator and bleeding the hyrdo cluitch lines. mr2s rock :D

That sounds a little low... stock in the US they were 112hp at the crank. Unless this is one of the really old ones, there were some produced before the 4AGE.

The V8 is being done by bill strong, v8mr2.com.

Another interesting note on the gas tank, which is under the center console as you said. The center of the gas tank is at the center of gravity of the car, so the weight distribution of the car shifts something like less than half a percent front/rear when the tank goes from full to empty.
 
70 WHP sounds very low... the drivetrain eats maybe 20% from the crank.... so more like 90 or more WHP would make sense.

My current intake removes the AFM system with ECU programming... so the air filter is right on the inlet to the quads.

Yes, we had to replace the fuel pump on the red one. That was a pain in the ASS. Other things have not been so difficult to date :p
 
it's an original 86kw engine with over 200,000km on the clock, so it's gonna be a little bit tired :) not every dynos are necessarily 100% accurate horsepower either, just a good comparison tool

that's wicked about the fuel tank tho, i'd never thought of that :D learn something new every day!

Of course, the whale tail spoiler saves you from the spoiler issues...

Long's MR2 is great aside from the sleepy pop up lights :/ Those just are bleh :p
And mine would own it off the line ;)

Speaking of mine, it should be rolling around and terrorizing poor ricers within the next 12 hours...

ANd I need to get to school...
 
If I ever get a chance I'll probably just draw what my car would look like. I was seriously disappointed during my search for what my MR-2 would look like.
 
And the MR20 prowls again...

Update...

Its running now.. replaced the starter... smoe pics from a drive. Yes, those are cheap steel wheels and tires, because I had them laying around when we were setting it up. The Falken Azenis on my Corolla will move over to it tomorrow morning for the autocrossing...
