2005 Le Mans lap times vs. my GT4 replication times...

I wanted to see how good of a job PD did with "La Sarthe" and the "LMP 1" cars, since this seems to be a hot topic on this board. :)

Based on some stats I've been able to dig up, I tried to mimic like cars on La Sarthe 1, to see how close to the lap times that were acheived last weekend. I had to use "Arcade Mode" in order to get HP and weight "close" to RL, but was not able on the Audi R8. This year's rules really cut them down on power, and was outside the scope of the 20% adjustment. In order to compensate and get a similar power to weight ratio, I increased the weight, but it's not adustable "enough" to be accurate. For all intents and purposes...I was close.

The driving style I used just was to just try to be smooth, slow in, fast out, accelerate after all the apexes and ride the kerbs on the exit corner. Not qualifying style, but a "brisk race pace", promoting even tire wear. I used the gear indicators to dictate braking points and gear selection. I didn't go for late braking, but let the indicator flash 3-4 times before braking. To put my driving ability in perspective, not at all bragging or saying I'm the fastest guy here, but my previous best on La Sarthe 1 is 3:00.77x, Minolta, stg 4 with R5s. Though I've driven La Sarthe 1 a lot, I only went for a "fast lap" a few times. My other fast laps are 1:28 at Suzuka, 1:22 at Grand Valley, GT mode F1, and verified by the mods.

The "Real Life" stats:

- 2005 Audi R8 520hp
950kg
hp:kg ratio .547
top race speed 310km/h, 192mph
qualifying time 3:37.795
best race lap 3:39.781
tires that last 20-30 laps (reported double and triple stinting of 12-13 laps between pits.

- 2005 Pescarolo Judd ~620hp (reported 100hp more than Audi, I don't have an exact figure),
900kg
hp:kg ratio .688
top race speed 325km/h
201mph
qualifying lap 3:34.715
best race lap 3:34.968

My Arcade mode stats/settings:

- Audi R8 626hp
990kg
hp:kg ratio .632
top speed (quick settings limited to 330km/k, to make sure I could ride the rev limiter at 310km/h)
Lap times were between 3:38-3:40; My B-Spec Driver with 95 machine skill and 81 for the other settings got 3:39-3:41
Tires were R1

- Pescarolo Judd 635hp
900 kg
hp:kg ratio .705
top speed (limited to 340, same reason)
lap times were between 3:35-3:37
Tires were R1

* Additional info to consider:

I used Traction Control because I used the DS2 vs. my DFP, and I haven't used the DS2 since GT4 came out. But using the DS2, I would be forced to drive "smoother".

I have yet to verify GT4's tire degredation. I doubt that R1s would last 24 laps as the Audis did this year. So I'm not sure how much the suspected GT4 softer compound would make a difference.

Arcade mode doesn't allow for suspension or aero changes...both cars tended to understeer.

I'm sure faster times are possible if pushing at the limit, and my test was in no way and exact science, but I think that all in all it resulted in some pretty close times to Real Life.

👍 PD.

There is no coverage on this race where I live so could you tell me which cars won there class.Sorry if this is too of topic.

It sure did. Very ingenious test. I would never have thought of this. Thanks for the info.

Of course, it begs the question: Why couldn't PD have made your setup the default, just for the sake of realism? In GT mode, the cars are 30 MPH too fast on the straight, and well over 20 seconds per lap too fast around the track. I don't understand their thinking.

You need to alter the carsr power in arcade mode to get similar results, PD have upped the power of the LMP cars to allow them to keep up with the Group C racers so you're times in GT4 should be a lot faster unless you reduce the cars power to the same ammount used on the real cars.

EDIT: read his post too quick and missed the fact that he had done that :dunce:.

with chincanes on i did a 3min 14.614 secs in a bentley speed 8
(licsense special-15)

Parity.

Look at the cars and classes that make up the top "race cars" in GT4. GT1, LMP1, LMP900, Group-C...Minolta, Toyota GT-One, Sauber, Nissan 92C, R8, 787, etc. Different eras, different rule bases, different specs. All most people see is "LeMans type cars", and would want to race against each other even though the cars span some 20 odd years of rule changes.

I think that one of the problems is in real life itself in that the top class never really had 3-4 different manufacturers/cars at any given time. I loved going to an ALMS race but the LMP900 field consisted of 2 Audis, 2 Panoz, and 2 Caddilacs. For PD, it would be impossible to field 6 "different" cars, from the same era/class. It's easier to just make all the "LMP-type" cars have ~800hp, with similar weight, so the racing could be somewhat fair. I doubt that it would be too hard to get the R8s to put out those kind of numbers less the restrictors and boost limitations. It would suck to have the ALMS spec R8 and want to race it against your buddy in say the Toyota GT-One, but it would be pointless if you are 100-200hp down.

Also, I'm sure that nobody saw the 100hp cut or 50kg weight penalty coming for the R8s this year. Got to love the French for giving the home team the edge.

3:35.535 in an Arcade Mode, 627hp, 195mph limited Speed 8 on R1 tires. Probably not the same as in the licence test, but closer to the Speed 8 from last year.

Very interesting. It's cool to see how the lap times compare.

And teh Pescarolo's still lost. They did put up a good fight, though.

ahh.. just so u know.. the R8's were given the hp cut and the weight penalty because of upcoming rule changes made by the ACO.. it wuz pretty bad that they still beat the C60's.. LMAO

oh.. and awesome job on the lap time comparioson.. i dont think u coulda done it better.. 👍

Granted...but that's a heck of a handicap though. I'm all about supporting the "Privateer", but that wasn't even a "race", given no tech difficulties, in a class that's supposed to emphasise parity.

All I'm saying is that the changes came "conveniently" at a time a French team was in the running...but I digress. :p

The more ironic thing is that they also banned the "quick-release gearbox" Audi nicely implemented, and the Pescarolo (at least the one car) suffered from gearbox problems. If they had the Ricardo, they would have still had a shot.

****Update on tire wear:

R1s won't last 24 -26 laps at La Sarthe 1 as they did in "Real Life". :)

But the "double stinted" tires were a "special compound" developed to cope with the heat, that I'm sure PD couldn't have factored in by the GT4 release date.

Nice work and interesting comparison! I truly enjoyed this years Le Mans more than ever, as I was able to follow it with much more knowledge about the tracks and its challenges and difficulties!

Colnago: I'm sorry you will have to change your singature soon, now that BMW has confirmed it bought the majority of SAUBER. I'm sorry to see my Swiss team leave...despite they keep the factory in Hinwil (Kanton Zurich/ Switzerland), it will count officially as a German team from next year on. NOw I hope they will get NICK Heidfeld back! AAAwesome!

Great...more good news. 👎 I knew they were going to use BMW "lumps" next year but this sux. Well, I'm still in denial that Kimi left and its too late to take off my SAUBER/Red Bull sticker:

:D

If BMW wanted to do something, they should have bought Minardi, I'd love to seem them in the running, which would make the grid more competitive as a whole. Well, maybe VW/Audi will get some larger "attachments" and pick up the ball with some F1 involvement.
