Racing with DFP...times!

:dunce: After ~10 hours of practice with the DFP of a friend, we raced the Nurburgring 4h. 15 laps each... thing is: after 30 laps, the best lap time achieved was 8'55.xx.
When I got home, on my DS2, on the 1st lap did 8'54, with mistakes and everything :crazy: Is playing with the DS2 really faster than the wheel???

After thinking about it some more I got the conclusion that, on the DFP (while being easier to lose control, bumps and alike) we got scared of messing up, so corner entry is slower. We play more cautiously and consistent, besides being slower on lap times. On the other hand, on the DS2, no hesitation on going over curbs or flooring the car.

Anyone has also thought about this? Any comments or am I getting :dunce: ?

ps. I would NEVER trade the feeling of playing with the DFP for the marginally faster times on the DS2 :dopey: :drool:
 
The key is centring.

If it all goes belly-up and you have a DS2 you can just let go. The wheels automatically centre and stay there. Try the same thing with the DFP and the wheels will go all over the damn place.

DFP is quicker - eventually.
 
You just need more practice. In the end you will be faster with the DFP. The amount of precise control is way higher than the DS2.
 
I remember there's been a discussion at the GTRP which is faster - the DFP or the DS2. As a conclusion, I came up with a statistic from the database comparing the top times of the licenses. There were just as many top times driven with a wheel than there were with a controller. And there's no way to make a scientifically correct approach anyway, as some people just are faster with a DS2, and some are faster with a DFP.
Your problem might have been practise. If you'd use a DFP for let's say two or three more weeks, I think you would be able to match your DS2 times. But I don't see a potential advantage on either side.

Although I must say I'm a DS2 user, and I am sure I would be a tad quicker with a wheel at times, given enough time to practise.

I agree with the Interceptor on this matter. Myself, I´m´way faster with the DFP. simply because I´ve used it for so long, that the DS2 feels awkwards.
 
Pros and Cons:

DFP: Very precise steering and throttle control. Slower centering and steering inputs, and throttle inputs - 2.5 turns for lock to lock.
DS2: Ultra quick steering and throttle control - you can go from steering full left to full right with a 1cm flick of the thumb. Less precise control.
 
when i bought my DFP, i thought that it would let me handle the car easier and drift better, but...I was wrong. I am so bad at the wheel that im starting to get pissed. But I prefer the wheel more cause it feels like a real car steering (expect for the "whirr" of the motor), everything is nicely done. Now I should go do more laps on Trial Mt with my DFP...
 
Remember you don't drive your own real car in real life with a DS2 do you if you did it would be easy to drive, what I'm saying is the DFP is harder but for good reason, it's more like real life:yuck: :lol:
 
you know, ive never used a DFP...ever. i love my Logitech DS2 wireless controller. and i have no money to go buy a DFP. i get more than decent times with it so im not complaining.
 
I thought it would take me forever to get used to the DFP after racing with the controller for so long.
Well, it took me only one day to start beating my DS2 times

Live for Speed with a DFP.........you have no idea what you're missing! :scared:
 
I have never played GT3 or 4 with a stick. I can't imagine playing a driving game without a DFP. If you want some serious and challenging DFP fun, run the Yellow Bird with medium racing rubber (to keep it more realistic) at the Ring. :nervous: You'll get lots of counter steering practice! If you don't, you ain't pushing hard enough.
 
Back in Prologue days when I first got my DFP I was worried that I would never be able to match my DS2 times, to my suprise not only did I enjoy the game much more with DFP but after some practice I had no problems matching and beating my DS2 times.

Everyone is different I guess but you should be able to match your DS2 times sooner or later.

How is that realistic? Medium racing rubber R3s? I play with N3s on that thing buddy. Sometimes even N2s.

I'm just saying:
R3 relative to N3 is just nomenclature. I've driven a 2WD 911 with performance street tires on road courses and the N series in the game (mainly on the Yellow Bird and other 2WD RUFs) don't feel realistic to me. IMHO of course.

N2's!...Not even a Porsche is that loose!:lol:

i totall suck with the controller but i'm damn good with a wheel. but i have played gt4 for probably less than 20 minutes with the controller. i like driving with radial tires as well...

Do you have your wheel mounted somewhere solid and comfortable?

ON the advice of the top guys, I tried a Momo wheel in GT3 and absolutely hated it. HATED. I drove better the first time I ever played GT3 at a demo in Best Buy than I did with the wheel. I gave up.

But with GT4 I tried again, risking the money on a DFP. The key is this time I made a little stand for the wheel to keep it rock solid and in the right position in front of a comfortable chair. I wouldn't dream of going back, and with a little practice I've even managed to gold some of the ice racing licenses without any wall riding at all.

Everyone know that I use a lot the DFP, the controller allow you to make impossible movement with the wheel.
 
what kinda lap times do you get with say the latest s2000 on tsukuba with n2 tires using a controller?
 
yeah i have a replay of me going about half a second faster. my line wasnt as neat as yours and i went in the grass at the exit of the last corner. i could probably get in the mid 1:06's if i really practiced hardcore.

but i dunno what my word means to you since i have no way of posting the replay on the internet :(.

The replay is from a few months ago. i think i'm gonna start playing gt4 again while i wait for the lfs patch.

one thing i noticed is on a few turns my line is smoother. like the link between the section right before the Dunlop wheel.

all i know is i dont have the time or patience to go as fast as you if i'm using a controller :p.

i dont have any way to prove my times. I havent done much testing myself at all so i dont know if a controller is faster than a wheel or not... all i know is i am much faster with a wheel and i havent seen many lap times done with a controller that i couldnt beat. maybe with grippier tires a controller is faster... i dont know :p. my bro is over so i might end up playing gt4 a bit more. I only play with radial tires most of the time :p

i think if some guy practices day and night with a controller he might be able to beat someone using a wheel... but for me it is much easier to drive quickly with the DFP than the controller

:EDIT: all i know is alot of guy that think they are fast are gonna get their virtual egos crushed in gt5 :sly: :EDIT:
 
We've had this discussion in WRS a few times. Bascially it comes down to what you feel best with. One extremely fast bloke uses either DS2 or DFP, which ever he belives is the best to use for that combo. Another extremely quick guy only uses DFP, and another only uses DS2.

I personally only use DFP and my DFP skills are much better than my DS2 skills now.

I grabbed a 2003 Honda S2000, gave it an oil change wacked on N2's and drove a few laps of tskubar with DFP.

1'06.661 (compared to your 1'07.9x) Still left a few tenths.

So what does that prove?
