The site got bigger, more traffic.

That really doesn't explain the grammatical preferences.

this is 2001:

OMG wat hppns if u wur to drift in gt2 n do stff lik dat?

this is now:

I was wondering what the issue is with drifting in GT2 is and other related topics. (ok a SLIGHT exaggeration)

I guess people are realizing that intelligent (or at least coherent) posts are taken more seriously.

...You're not complaining, right?

It somewhat does, I think it was Jordan's decision that he wanted to clean the place up. He wanted the place to appeal more to new users, so the mods had to crack down a little.

No, I'm not complaining, when I joined this forum, I was expecting that kind of typing, but lo and behold I found educated people from all over, which is GREAT. :)

( About me being coherent, I don't really see where rabbits fit in to the equation)

QFT LOLZ.

No really. Is there a problem with coherent posts?

Last I checked, ORLY counted as Chat/1337 speak.

You're a hypocrite. Good going. 👍

I also find it funny that in the first image, they've forgotten the ' in Don't.

As far as I remember, the rules in the AUP about "txt talk" have always been there, but in the last 3-6 months it has evolved even more on the forums themselves. Really big forums in the past and now just aren't sucsessful when they have very loose rules; most of them are idiots to the extreme. GTP is a much better place trying to keep everyone under control like this. It's something we all have to live with, and seem to be getting on ok with.

Since about mid-2002, GTP has had a policy of suggesting, and when diplomacy fails, enforcing grammar and spelling. Earlier, the mods were a little more lienent, but as more and more people used too many abbreviations and "lazy" spelling for common words, so a line had to be drawn.

Since this site wanted to be held in a professional regard, the lingua franca of GTPlanet cannot be English for Stupids. For people of different native tongues and regional differences to easily understand what's posted, then typing in a semi-coherent, and somewhat uniform way is very important.

This isn't a dumping ground for two idiots to battle over who can use more meaningless acronyms, or who can post more images than text, or a smiley parade...this place is for discussion. If you don't like it, find somewhere else to participate in your childish antics. Those who have nothing to contribute but noise and disruption will be shown the door.

Here is an early thread:

Here is a new thread:

Ok, its not a HUGE difference, but on some threads there is l33t sp33k and stuff, but now they stress grammar and not confusing others.
What happened?

I don’t know, but the revised HTTP - (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) rules that you’ve apparently created and implemented in the links that you posted, both lead me to this site:

I agree. If you're going to criticise constructively or otherwise, make sure you're not guilty of it yourself. I usually just use 1337-speak whenever I want to prove an idiotic point or make fun of the chat/1337/haxor speak. The rest of the time I actually pride myself in typing the whole word.

Except when I'm typing fast and really don't care what comes out, which happens a lot in mass msn convos, for instance. But in general, you'll notice the typing style pretty much reflects the intelligence of the person who is typing. Hence, my abhorrence for the freakin "ORLY" birds.

Only the ORLY bird haters think my signature sucks :grumpy:.

I am pretty sure that it has something to do with GTP going global--with people from Asia and Australia on here, our text-speak and leet-speak has a very confusing effect and bad influence. Ever since the rapid growth of GTP, members from all over the world have started to join, and many of them do not have the good fortune to be fluent with proper grammar, let alone leetspeak.

Even I, until last year, did not know what the acronym 'lol' meant. Now I know it means, and am guilty of using it. It is not that acronyms and leetspeak are completely unacceptable, but it is encouraged to type things out, and take an extra 5 seconds.

By the way, I just typed a whole post in this thread without leetspeak, therefore owning all you... how do I say noob without leetspeak? Damn.

Is that a gun in your pocket? Are you going to list everyone who's viewing threads you post in from now on?;)

I'm pretty sure that, regardless of the good times that GTP is passing thru as far as posting quality, there will be bad times and we cannot change that...not the mods, not the admins, nor us.

Example: When PD releases its GT5, plenty of spoiled kids (as refering to their parents that have money) who have just bought the game, will come here looking for advice and help, maybe not immediately but they will eventually come. And many of these new members will not follow GTP's strict ethics on grammar and correctness at posting; so all we can do is the usual stuff, which is to guide them and help keep GTP's respectable reputation among the others car/videogame forums.

We are improving and many members who have posted in this thread have demostrated it so.

Moderators have been very patient and comprehensive on new members who seem to start getting a bad postwhoring habit, and that tells a lot about this site and that also make the other members to respect the mods advices and move a finger for a change.

This thread is not getting hijacked and let's not do so for the sake of the topic.

Ciao!

Are you saying that anyone who gets GT5 (or any GT game) as soon as it comes out is a spoiled kid? That's idiotic.

A lot of us that are "sticklers" on decent grammar and spelling, also don't spend as much time in here as we used to.
And trying to teach a pig to sing, only annoys the pig, and wastes your time.
The level of asshatery, as a result, has gone up.
Another thing that has happened is that those of us that are "old-timers", only hang out in threads started by or with replies by other "old-timers."
Lastly, some of us also have lives that restrict our time more, and we just don't hang out in here as much as we used to.
