Online Site Finds Out You Can't Kill a PS3
Posted Aug 13, 2007 at 01:50PM by Ryan A.
Online site PS3 Vault did a series of experiments to its PlayStation 3 unit that were designed to test the console's durability and stability. Before we proceed though, please note that we do not recommend doing the following to your PS3 units even though the results acquired are favorable.

Anyway, what the said site did was leave the PS3 unit on for 108 hours alternating between playing video games and watching Blu-ray movies. The interesting part here is that the test was done three times under these environmental circumstances: a typical family room, the back of a freezer van, and a heat sauna.

Curious? Here are the results:
  • Family Room: Console ran continuous for the 108 hours with only one incident happening at 12 hours in - a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds. For the remaining time allocated no incidents were reported.

  • Back of Freezer Van: Temperature started at 50F and was progressively scaled down over the next four days to reach zero degrees. We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees , this was maintained for the last 24 hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden , blackout to the screen, this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen. 108 hours in and still working fine.

  • Heat Sauna: Starting temperature was 100 F and Gradually increased to 120F over the last 24 hours. The only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64 hours at 110 F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colors.

How To Kill a PS3 Console
So how good is the console when put under extreme operating pressure and alternating environments The total concept of the Ps3 console instills robustness, stability and durability, the overall package combines the latest chip technology and peripheral advancements. The following results of the console are noteworthy reading and were done under the following guidelines. Results were recorded accurately to provide an actual operating statistic.

The following conditions were applied to each testing environment
  • Continuous usuage of 108hours with no interruption to power supply
  • Game of choice was Resistance Fall of Man & Motor Storm, Enchanted Arms
  • Blu Ray movies – Several – around 10 different titles , Casino Royale, The Departed, Pirates of the Caribbean, Terminator 2, Superman Returns…
  • Console was positioned on standalone timber unit with approximate 10cms of airflow under neath.
  • Same 10 players were used over this period each playing or using the unit for a maximum of 1.5hours in any given session.
  • Same controllers were used throughout the testing period
The following cycle was copied and used in each testing environment.
Start time Monday 9am –

  1. 2 hours blue ray dvd titles
  2. 4 hours continuous play on Resistance FOM
  3. 2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm
  4. 2 x blue ray dvd movies
  5. 1 x blue ray dvd movie
  6. 1 x blue ray dvd movie
  7. 2 hours continuous play on Motor Storm
  8. 6 hours of Motor Storm
  9. 6 hours of Resistance Fom
  10. 10 hours of Blue Ray Dvd 7 titles
  11. 1 hour of Motor Storm
  12. 3 hours of Resistance

  14. 2 hours blue ray dvd title
  15. 2 hours blue ray dvd title
  16. 5 hours Resistance FOM
  17. 5 hours Motor Storm
  18. 1 hour enchanted Arms
  19. 3 hours blue ray dvd titles
  20. Repeated from the top until 108hours
Environment 1 Typical Family Room
  • Temperature 73 F
  • Console Ran continuous for the 108hours with only once incident happening at 12 hours in – a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds. For the remaining time allocated no incidents were reported
Environment 2 Back of a Freezer Van
  • Unit was placed inside the closed van with controllers and screen mounted outside, - no one was willing to sit in side the van for any extended period of time
  • Temperature Started at 50F and was progressively scaled down over the next 4 days to reach 0degrees.
  • Incidents We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees , this was maintained for the last 24hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden , blackout to the screen, this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen.
  • 108hours in and still working fine
Environment 3 Heat Sauna
  • Again console inside and controllers and screen outside.
  • Starting temperature was 100F and Gradually increased to 120F over the last 24hours.
  • Incidents Strangley enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.
  • This console is now back in a normal environment and working fine.

Not a big surprise to me, my PS3 has been running 24/7 since Folding@Home was released (March?), if I'm not playing a game or watching a Blu-Ray movie it's Folding & it's not always air conditioned, for several days a week it's 90 degrees+ in my house (It is summer in Oklahoma!).
It's one tough machine!

I feel better about the heat issue now after reading this. My PS3 is sat in a glass fronted cabinet (I've got a two and three year old, the PS3 has to be kept away!) and noticed it gets bloody hot in there. I only play it now with the glass door open (its a sliding one so it's not a problem.)

I even went as far as to buy a cooling fan from Game (£15 in the UK) which clips on the back and plugs into the USB. Whatever you do, don't get one!! It is so bloody noisy, with five fans blasting away. On top of that, it increased the PS3 temp so much that the systems own fans were screaming their heads off within minutes.

Needless to say, it soon came off!

Maybe it's the location of the PS3 that upset it? But if anyone wants the fan, PM your details and I'll post it to you. I ain't using it again!

Send it to Jenson Button. He needs all the fans he can get right now...

No, seriously, that's a generous offer Dasildon (and welcome to GTP by the way 👍)

I'm quite glad to read this too, since my PS3 is in my bedroom, which gets to pretty ridiculous temperatures in the summer here in London (well, not this year...), and it does get very hot, but so far it hasn't been a problem.

Quite impressive to survive those conditions.

One thing we have to bear in mind though is that my original Playstation and Playstation 2 were fine for about 2 years then they began to get problems reading discs. We need to see how the PS3 performs in the long run.
