Ok the two choices are these... (based on my needs)

1. Philips Expandium Mini CD/Mp3 player

Pro: Cheap ($40)
Cons: CD format old, takes more time, no radio or record features

2. Neuros

Pro: Great features (broadcasts, records, radio), Good value for HD based player($199), 20gb
Cons: Still a little out of my price range

*Note* I will not buy an iPod if you want reasons check out the Neuros site again

Other alternatives could be...

Philips HHD100

Pro: Nice design, 15gb
Cons: On the expensive side (retail $399?), no record or radio and doesn't broadcast

Muro 256mb Mp3 Player

Pro: Has most of the same features as the Neuros (broadcasts, records, radio)
Cons: Small storage(512mb max), almost as expensive as HD based players ($179)

Thanks for your help.

Nick:rolleyes:

go for the neuros. Also, don't rule out the Nomad Jukebox Zen NX and the Dell one. I normally would NEVER reccomend dell but the Dell one is made by Creative labs.

I looked at those two briefly with a bunch of other HD based players and never went back because it just wasn't worth it to me. Thanks

Nick:rolleyes:

I got the Philips from an online merchant for $270 plus tax. I like it but it freezes sometimes so you just have to hold a coupla buttons down at once and it unfreezes.

freezing should be fixed with a firmware update - i LOVE how Phillips made the Neuros open source. It's a step in the right direction for this sort of thing 👍

I have the Zen NX Extra, 60gb's of files and music. It's awesome.

lol, that's cool, I actually don't have that big of a collection though. They say the Neuros can be upgraded (after market) with 40, 60 and 80gb since it's just a laptop HD.

The majority of those hardisk players use laptop size HDD's. I was going to get the 30gb version, but they didn't have any and becaue it was January sales time, I managed to get a fair amount off the standard price.

I'm still impressed with the sound quality of the thing. I'm using the same pair of in-ear sony headphones and i've encoded most (I haven't gotten around to ripping all my collection yet) of my CD's in 160kbps LAME mp3. It sounds way better than my old minidisk player.

Yeah but even though the use laptop HD's it doesn't mean you can replace them. Once they're done that's it you have to get a new mp3 player.

I was going to buy an iPod, but then I looked at the prices.

40gb iPod = £450
60gb Creative Jukebox = £280

Hmm 20gb less storage for £170 more, that makes complete sense!

I looked at that neuros site and that broadcast thing looks really cool. Although i'm wondering if it would be easily interfered with.

It looks like you want that, so just bloody buy it!

Yeah... I was wondering how this poll might pan out because from the start I was leaning toward the Neuros. I really don't have the money to fork over for it though. That's why I was considering the Philips mini cd because I can get by with that ok...

Even if the iPod does come out with a "cheaper" one it is still outragous for what you get, then again so are these Thumbdrive mp3 players. I figure this...

iPod(10gb)... $250
thumbdrive(256mb + other features) ... $150-200
Neuros(20gb + other features + broadcasting)... $200

Hmm.... ?

At least for the Creative Zen it's not worth it to me because I don't have that much music and I'd rather have the features than just have my whole collection around especially since I have a laptop and an extra Hd.

There are smaller ones, but then you can't change the hdd. The only thing about it, with the carry case on it's pretty big. Well not massive but abit big.

I still have a 128mb stick MP3 player (also by creative), those mini CD's are only like 180mb in capacity. I think it might be best just to save your cash for the Neuros.

yeah... I don't understand two things...

1. why apple came out with a "mini" ipod 4gb?
2. why HP decided to just slap there name on the ipod(like i read though it was a good move for apple)

Btw, the neuros is bigger than the ipod, it's not that bad but the back pack(black part) could be better. On it's defense it does have a lot more features it has to pack inside.

1. Maybe 4gb HDD's are easier to downsize.
2. I'm pretty sure that's just the start of HP trying to produce electronics products as well as pc's. (I read it on a news page)

Actually the carry case that came with my creative player looks allot like this one for the iPos. Heh.

The new iPod is going to be 60 British pounds (about $100?) It will obvioulsey have a smaller HDD but I believe it will still have a good capacity.

I'll belive that when I see it.

Hmm.. Well that's better than the Rio 1.5gb at $300, I honestly don't know what some of these guys are thinkin? Still not really worth buying the ipod

it's not really that it's just. With the players today I expect all player to have certain features... Voice record, radio, radio record, back lit, eq(maybe), etc. stuff like that... as long as it's more than a gig I think it doesn't matter because I can transfer music then and my taste won't change that drastically. Plus the neuros can transmit meaning no wires, who wouldn't want a feature like that?? I have that cheap ass irock transmitter.

The mini ipod will retail for about 250USD when it first comes out, but will probably lower to 200USD after a while.

I suggest an iRiver iFP-395T...extremely tiny and 512MB storage isn't too bad.

Does the size of the player matter to you? Because that Neuros is huge. I have a RioRiot-20GB. I got it because I had a deal for only $150. When I bought it, I figured size wouldn't really matter, but after I've had it for about a year and a half, you really begin to notice the inconvenience. You really have to think about how you are going to use it. If you're planning of listening to it while excercising, then you really do need a smaller mp3 player. It depends on you though.

The options on the Neuros are actually really good though. If you don't mind having a large player, then go for it. I think it is worth the $200.

iPods ARE outragously overpriced, but they are probably one of the best mp3 players you can get. Since when did SonicBlue make a Rio 1.5GB for $300? It better be extremely small for that much money..

The size doesn't really matter in the case of the Neuros because of the features but if it was just a player like an iPod then yes that would matter a lot. I also happen to hate rio because of their SP250 Mp3/cd player that I had that was absolute crap! The Rio players out now are way over priced for what you get even at $150 to me. If you look at most mp3 players today they have some other function than just playing mp3s. All the companies that didn't figure this out yet will probably fall. At least IMO.

I have had the Muro 512Mo for 2 weeks and I really enjoy it.
The FM transmitter function it excellent !
