f1 and 1 were bargins compared to this

Within a month of both the UK and World records being smashed for auction prices for private number plates, the Daddy of plates A 1 is likely to beat both by a mile.
A 1, originally issued in London in 1903 is the UK's most famous registration plate, having had a continuous and well documented history since Earl Russell managed to secure it by getting his Butler to queue up all night outside the licencing authorities office in London in 1903.
The current owner, who obviously wishes to be kept anonymous is likely to bag around £10 million for the number, which is what a private bidder is rumoured to have bid to the owner.
If it reaches this, it will beat the recent £7 million paid for the number "1" in the UAE last month. The current UK record stands at £430,000, recently paid for F 1, by a Bradford car dealership.

I wonder how much for a "1" plate in some US states.....

I'd be cool to have the best plate from the best state, and it would probably cost far less than these ones.

At the end of the day it's still just a number plate. Having A1 as your Porsche or whatever isn't half as cool as having A5TON on your DB5. I can understand having a plate that means something to either yourself, or the car, but there's only so much that a plate is worth no matter what the letter and numbers combination is and it certainly aint £10 million.

Instead of "1" what about a 999 9999 (or 999 999)? Or ZZZ ZZZZ (ZZZ ZZZ)? Why is "1" so wanted? Its just a number. IMO getting a personalized plate with a word is better. eg YSS and his TopGear plate. :D

There is a VVVVVVV on a MINI down the street from me at home. I thought that one was pretty nifty. It's either that or 6 Vs. I don't know.

That is crazy money for a number plate. They could have bought this "1" more than 10 times in New Zealand for that price.

Did you take that pic?

I remember a new story a few years back about that plate being sold for a large(ish) amount.

Ask the drivers in F1 why they all want the number 1 on the nose of their cars...

Yes, I took it a while ago when I was up in Auckland.

The last person I know who bought "1" was Shane Cole who founded Paradise.net. He put it on his Diablo Roadster that he bought after he sold his company to TelstraClear. If I remember correctly he paid about NZ$750,000 for it.

I don't know if he has moved to Auckland though. I haven't seen him around in Wellington for a couple of years now.

If I had the money, I would defiantly get 1 as the number, but I would need one of the greatest cars on Earth, thats really hard to get.

I think In Illinois, you can't GET 1 because that's the Gov'ner's plate

You've gotta run for governor as a Chicago Democrat to even think about getting that plate.
