Since I'm already doing renovations, I might as well renovate my PS5 too!

My PS5 was displaying error messages last winter, telling me to let it cool down. These warnings would appear for a few seconds, and then everything would return to normal without the console shutting down. This mainly happened in a public lobby on GT7, in the menu between races. I could hear the fan running very loudly when it happened. After some research, I discovered that this is often caused by the thermal liquid metal present on the console's silicon, so I ordered some a few months ago. It happened last night between two races... so I set about making this repair as quickly as possible.

Here is the error message it displayed.

A few screws removed later, the motherboard is turned over and the silicon is revealed.

The thermal pads were in good condition. However, you will notice the dry areas on the silicon; this is represented by the thinnest layer in a lighter gray.

This is what it looks like after cleaning with 99% isopropyl alcohol. It's supposed to be a mirror. You can clearly see signs of overheating on the silicon...

And here is the result with the new thermal liquid metal is applied evenly.

Reassembling everything, plugged it back in, and everything seemed to be working fine. I tried to recreate the moments when I heard the fan running louder in GT7 or another game I knew, and I couldn't hear anything anymore! Mission accomplished!

My PS5 is about 3 years old. If you've ever seen error messages like this, you might want to consider this repair. It's really not as complicated as it seems.

Here's the YouTube link to the video I followed, in case it helps others...!

Final Fantasy 16 almost fried my PS5 back in march and only had 1 year old lol I kept getting the overheat messages every 2 minutes until it did shut itself off. I had to take it in for maintenance and it was left as good as new! I'm very impressed that you could just do it by yourself, kudos!

Man you're brave. Im guessing you use the ps5 in a vertical position?

For the first year and a half, yes. It has a metal bubble on the bottom of the silicon...
Im a little paranoid about keeping my PS5 Pro healthy. Have it horizontal and use two 120mm fans and two 80mm fans with a thermostat contoller to ventilate the cabinet. Also monitor the internal cabinet temperature with a Bluetooth thermostat.

The round that received the most elimination votes was:
Round 1 - Ford Escort RS Cosworth '92 (CS) at Red Bull Ring - S02 Afternoon (8 laps)
Therefore, the entire combo has been dropped from next week's line-up. @Worst_Driver Nicktune wins Prize A, and gets to choose an entirely new car and track combo to replace it.

The round that received the second most elimination votes was:
Round 3 - Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type A (FD) '02 (SH) at Kyoto Driving Park Yamagiwa - S04 Late Morning (8 laps)
This means either the car or track will be replaced for next week's line-up. @DRD_Niagara is the Prize B winner and they have the option to freeze the car or the track, or they can give that option to the Prize C winner. If they give the freeze away, they get to decide what car or track replaces the part of the combo that is left unfrozen by the Prize C winner.

Prize C goes to @Nicktune - they get whichever option the Prize B winner does not select.

Preliminary prize winners, please don't announce your prize selection until all incident reports have been filed and it's confirmed you don't have any penalties.
  • It is recommended you visit SNAIL combo history, along with other data on our car and track history, to review how many times we've raced each car and/or track.
  • Please remember, originality is always appreciated. Although not required, picking cars and tracks we've never raced is a plus.
  • What's more important is, you thoroughly test any combo you are considering, before making it your official selection.
    • For example, any car you select must not hit its rev limiter, either hard1 or soft2, at any point during a race, even in the draft.

IMPORTANT:
  • When posting your Prize A or Prize B selection, please list the complete in-game name of the car and/or track you are selecting.
    • For example, if you want to choose the Integra Type R as your car selection, post "Honda Integra Type R (DC2) '98".
    • If you want to select Monza for your track, post "Autodromo Nazionale Monza".
    • Being specific helps us to update the lineup accurately and also helps avoid any confusion among the drivers.
  • Please be sure to list the HP and Weight (LBS) of any car you select.
  • For track selections, include the Preset Weather and the Time of the Day (e.g.: S01 Afternoon) or it will be set to default.
    • Available settings can be found under Time/Weather Settings, when creating an online Lobby, after selecting your track.

Car Selection Guidelines
See Section 3 of the SNAIL OLR, Policies and Guidelines.

Track Selection Guidelines
See Section 3.1 of the SNAIL OLR, Policies and Guidelines
.

1Hitting the "hard" limit causes the RPMs to "bounce" and reduces torque and speed.
2Hitting the "soft" limit ceases all acceleration potential. Meaning, you're not going to go any faster.

Prize B: @Nicktune

Je gèle la bagnole - C’est à vous
(I freeze the car - Over to you)

Expressed in Parisien street French, with a touch of formality.

@JamCar0ne
Keeping it in the french theme, you know it was coming sooner or later as its already been a back up car once or twice in my picks but never ended up being used. Here's its time to shine.

Prize A: Renault Avantime 3.0 V6 24V '02 (CS Tires) @ Dragon Trail Gardens Reverse, Early Morning, S03.
Mid div lap time: 2:05

@Dragonwhisky @JamCar0ne

Fun fact about this weird car. Renault designed it to capture the empty nesters market. They thought that after the kids grew up and left the family home, the parents enjoyed their minivans (or monospace as the french call them), like the Renault Espace (Non F1 version), so much that they would want to treat themselves with something more luxurious while keeping some of characteristics of the minivan like the higher up seating position. Renault then had the genius idea of a luxury two door minivan and the rest is history. It flopped catastrophically because of course it did, just look at it. I'd still go crazy if I came across one in person, I think there is one or two that got imported in my province.
