Nestled in the picturesque commune of Varano de' Melegari, the Autodromo Riccardo Paletti has long served as a vital proving ground for Italian motorsport.
Originally constructed in 1969 as a modest 1.2-kilometre oval, the Varano Melegari circuit underwent rapid expansions to accommodate the growing demands of national racing. Rebuilt and renamed Autodromo San Cristoforo, the course was close to its current form by 1976, with a corner named after Jacky Ickx when the Belgian span off during a charity event.
In 1983 it was renamed in honour of Riccardo Paletti, a promising young Italian Formula One driver who tragically lost his life during a start line crash at the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal in 1982 - the last F1 driver killed on-track before Roland Ratzenberger on April 30th 1994, and the last in a race before Ayrton Senna the following day.
The track became known for hosting rounds of the Italian Formula Three Championship, a vital stepping stone for future international stars. Legendary drivers such as Riccardo Patrese, Michele Alboreto, and Giancarlo Fisichella all raced on the circuit in their development years, with its technical, highly demanding layout.
Beyond single-seater racing, the circuit established an enduring partnership with the iconic constructor Dallara, whose headquarters are located just across Il Ceno. Indeed Dallara's founder Giampaolo Dallara played a role in the circuit's original creation. Dallara has used the circuit for decades as an invaluable testing facility for prototype chassis, race cars, and supercars.
The track has undergone several upgrades to modernize its safety infrastructure while expanding to its present length of nearly 2.4 kilometres, and is a bustling hub for driver training schools and automotive research too.
