Just like my Mitsu Lancer thread this is another car that has started to catch my eye.

2dr or 4dr it actually looks pretty good and it sounds appealing with a diesel engine (if it comes that way) although... it'd be nice if diesel was cheaper too...

The only thing that would kinda deter me from buying/considering this is the expensive cost if maintenance is needed and the vw stigma of being a... _ _ _ car.

Either way, after seeing the new one... I'd SOOOOOOOOO get this.

Anyway, what you guys think?

I quite like the Golf, apart from the ridiculous price premium they have over here. One of my relatives has a Golf GT as a company car, and as beautifully made as the interior is, I couldn't justify the cost. I was shocked to discover that with the options he'd added, his was worth nearly £23,000! £23k on a Golf! He was going for a GTI but company car tax was the issue, I think.

We were interested in one until they dropped the £16,000 price tag on us - and that was for a near-basic petrol! Diesel would have been another grand or something on top. A similarly equipped (market leading!) Ford Focus would be around £1500 less, and have more room to haggle.

You're lucky over in the US. According to VW.com, a car identical to the one you posted a picture of (5 door with bodykit, 18 inch alloys, 2.5 litre 170hp engine) costs £100 less than we're charged for the base 3 door (no alloys, 1.4 litre engine) at current exchange rates.

Personally, I really like the Rabbit. I test drove 2 of them on auto and one stick and really liked it. If you have a wider budget go for the gti but if not the rabbit is a great car.👍

EDIT: Here in America the Rabbit has a 2.5 liter straight 5 and its really cheap for the base model, like 15 or 16 grand

16k will get you a brand new leon FR which is the golf gti equivelant. Petrol or diesel.

To answer the question about diesels, we won't be getting a Rabbit TDI in the United States any time soon. Volkswagen is quite literally making little to no money selling the car in the US (built in Germany, weak dollar, shipping costs, absurdly low price), so it won't be likely. They'll be happy to sell you a VW Jetta TDI that will get well over 40 MPG in the combined cycle, but that'll cost extra.

My overall opinion of the Rabbit is of course, positive. As one of the VW guys here (despite now owning a Toyota), the Rabbit is what we all like. A very affordable car that has too much goodness as part of the package. Considering that you can pick up a Three-Door model with a stick and rims for just over $16,000 USD with taxes and such, it is an absolute steal in a market dominated by other Japanese cars that would cost thousands more with the same level of equipment.

My only reservation on the Rabbit is that damn 2.5L I5 engine. I'm just not a fan of it. Sure, I'm used to the slow-rev power of the old 2.0L I4, but it just seems like this takes it to a whole new level. The added power for 2007 was nice (up from 150 to 170), but the fuel economy isn't exactly "best-in-class" anymore. It would be best to just swing in and grab a three-door, no options other than the Tangis alloy wheels and maybe stability control.

...Otherwise, keep a close eye on the Japanese Rabbit, the Mazda 3...
