1) Quoting a post, 2) Adding HTML

Hi

Please could a member of staff advise on the following?

1) I just setup a tuning garage, luckily, I've had some positive feedback - both regarding individual setups but more importantly, the theory behind my setup techniques.

What are the rules about quoting people if I wanted to use some of the positive feedback as promotion on my tuning threads OP. Can I just quote what they've said, in the same way as "quoting" someone when replying to a post?

2) I have a proven setup calculator that has worked on GT5 and is working very well on GT6, a fellow GTP member has taken my mathmatical equation and created a mini calculator using HTML, the calculator is already on other websites - is there any way I could add it to a post on my tuning thread?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give..

Regards
"H"

I don't think that first question has actually come up before; though, if a member has actually said it, I see no reason why you couldn't include that quote in your OP 👍

As for the second question, you'd get a more knowledgeable answer from @Jordan, but my take on it is that most user-content-heavy websites try to limit the ability to include HTML, as it allows too many loopholes to be exploited. Perhaps forum software has better filters these days - I simply don't know, other than that HTML hasn't been available here at GTP for a great many years. I'd say your best bet for the time being would be to provide a link to the calculator.

Thank you for your reply.. 👍

I'll have to try and track down the guy who transformed the equation into a physical calculator as he's much more knowledgable on these matters than me (i.e. doing a link).. It took me ages to work out how to hyperlink my posts into a tune index! He might know a way of linking the calculator..

I saw the icon that said "code" and it had html option, and I had delusions that it'd be a simple copy and paste job..

Should've known better!!

Thanks anyway :D

For linking, you can either copy/paste the web address and the forum software will automatically convert it to a clickable hyperlink once you've posted, or, you can wrap [url=www.insertaddress.com/here]Highlandor's Calculator[/url] tags around it, replacing that placeholder address. Just quote this and you'll see it 👍

1.) It's no problem if you'd like to collect other's quotes in your post.

2.) There's no way to embed HTML directly into your post. Your best option is to post the HTML version of the calculator on another web page, then just include a link to that page in your post.

Also, if you're having trouble with BB code formatting, don't forget to take a look at this reference guide.

Cool - thanks very much for your help on this.

I have a learning disability which is unique (that's what the specialist who diagnosed and treated me confirmed) - part of my brain that deals with visual infomation has an extremely low IQ, whilst the rest of my brain has a very high IQ. It means that I constantly fluctuate between being quite intelligent to being almost non functioning, this happens continuously throughout each and every day.

The reason I mention this is because I clicked on the link Jordan provided and ummm, haven't a clue what this all means!!

Could you clarify - when you talk about "linking", do you mean it's the same theory as linking an image or video to a post? So, the actual image would be on say photobucket, or a video is on youtube, but by quoting the link to it, the image or video appears on the post?

Apologies for the dumb question - this is one of those times the bad part of my brain is being used..

Apologies for the double post, I've managed to make some progress but have run into a couple of problems.

I've accessed a link and can make the link "work", but is there any way to make the calculator physically appear in a post?

The other problem is that it quotes my website? I'm going to move all my setup and tuning from my site to GTP, which is why I created my tuning garage thread. There aren't many, if any tuning threads which solely deal with online setups, aswell as offering a service to tailor a baseline setup to individual needs.

I feel that this will help add something to the Tuning sub forum, but technically, having the link to my site on he calculator is "soliciting", so do I have to get this changed, or could this be permitted as I'm "giving something back" to the community?

Ah, I'm sure that could be very frustrating at times. Of course, many people struggle with understanding how post formatting works, so don't worry about it too much.

If you look at each individual section of the guide I posted above, and then try to work through those examples, perhaps it will help. Note that if you click the "More Options..." button below the post editor, you'll be taken to the full editor screen with a "Preview" button, so you can experiment with the formatting options as much as you want, in private.

Yes, by a "link" I simply mean highlighted words which, when clicked, open up another web page. I see you've included a link to your page already. 👍

Unfortunately, no, there is no way to make the calculator appear within a post. As you are providing a resource, you are welcome and encouraged to link directly to your website.
