Excerpt:
The truth is, the Google workplace is pretty chaotic. You are expected to keep track of your own priorities and use their free resources to stimulate motivation and creativity. They are very selective about who can work for them, obviously they would not hire some slacker who can’t keep his priorities straight and isn’t very productive. There is a lack of structure at Google but they want it to be that way because of their beliefs.

I wouldn't think it would be. I also don't understand this whole "coming up with ideas" thing. What ideas? Better ways to land a ship at a dock? How to make a knecker knob that much more functional? Or just some boring advertising ideas? There's only so many boring ways to advertise, you know.

My job at Ford is really nice, too.

I am a co-op Kettering student, and my first work term is almost over.

I didn't have too much work to do, so I bought some headphones and listened to music all day, exposing myself to new genres and such. I made a list every day of the songs I like that I didn't have.

I was free to search the internet for hours on end when I had no work to do.

We get 11-12 off for lunch... so the restaurants aren't packed when we get there.

I get paid $14 an hour and I'm 19.

They gave me $1200 to help with my apartment costs.

You can come in anytime from 6 to 9 or so, as long as you work 40 hours that week.

I got a free membership to the fitness center, too.

What's your favorite from the list?

Mine is
An excellent cafeteria and of course it is free. They call the 15 lbs that you gain from working there “the Google 15″, because the food is freshly prepared and you have so many choices that you end up eating a whole lot.

BTW, Ford is doing horrible as a company, they might merge with Mitsubishi just to save their ass.

10 reasons why I won't work for Google (even though I'll have the degrees and the GPA to do so, if I wanted, in a few months):
1. west coast only
2. internet economy likes to chew you up and spit you out
3. companies touting free food as a reason to work there are historically doomed to failure (see: CA)
4. look at that stock price
5. holding a tech position at a tech/software company means you are pretty much disposable
6. a company with that much monopoly on a sector is doomed to a consumer backlash sooner or later
7. they are investing time/money in things that will not directly result in revenue
8. I like a schedule, and I like people around me to have a schedule
9. I doubt the salary will be that great with so many workplace perks
10. I am looking for a job, not a company that thinks they are my life

Who cares? This thread is about jobs.

I work maintenance at a local city-owned golf course. I only get $6.75 and the work can be grueling in the summer heat and sun, but you have to remember that golf courses are big. There's plenty of places to slack, and with only two bosses--who don't really care anyway--to cover 27 holes, sitings are few and far between. They don't really care if you don't call in when you're "sick", which I've done a few times this summer. You can pretty much have any schedule you want--I now work Friday-Sunday (yeah, all weekend, though only about 4 hours Saturday and Sunday) while I'm in school the other 4 days. It's not that bad, bsides the pitiful pay. I mean, VTEC gas mileage means 1.5 fill ups a week!

Well Mac D's is a great place for a first yob! According to the employee pamphlet every great CEO of every great company ever first started working at a MacDonald's. ANd now they're making millions a year! No joke!

1. west coast only
Don't diss my coast.

All excellent points

9. I doubt the salary will be that great with so many workplace perks
The salary is good, but the cost of living in the Bay Area is second only to New York City. A living wage for one person is north of $50,000. Even the crappiest apartments are $1000+

10. I am looking for a job, not a company that thinks they are my life
Google owns their employees like cattle.

Uhhhhhh, yeah. Let me know when that happens. Even if that was remotely possible (and it's not possible, since DCX and Mitsubishi have an ownership agreement), it's not like Mitsubishi could "save the ass" of anything larger than a lemonade stand, let alone Ford.

👍

I'm getting a job this winter when I'm 14 and all I'm saving up for is a base PS3 and a game. Then I'm going for my car.

My dad and my grandpa own a NAPA auto parts store and I'm going to be a "gopher", go for this, go for that. Stocking shelves too. I can't wait! I'm spending a good chunk of my summer there (when I'm not at PCC) I've worked there on a Saturday or two and I help park cars for the Rox baseball games in the summer, so I got a little cash to spend (around $30 a game is what I get) I really want to work. :)

Working for Google seems cool to me. For about a week. Then you'll get bored out of your mind with freedom like I do in the summer and want to quit.

That's awesome, dude. At least you don't have to look out for a job - guaranteed one!

Hm, I just checked. I guess it is legal to start working at 14. But still, a bit early, don't you think?

Not for me! :sly:

The law in Massachusetts says you can work on a family farm at any age. That's a bit much, working in the field I mean. Taking care of animals isn't bad though, I guess.

@ GT4_Rule, yeah it is pretty awesome. :)
