DIY Handbrake for Your Wheel​

Hello GTPlanet!

I have created a super simple handbrake that you can use for your wheel. It's simple, it's easy to make, uses basic household materials, and it's functional. The following is an explanation of the basic concept on how to make this. In other words, you could probably create your own version using slightly different materials, but the general technique is still the same.

Materials + Explanation​

You will need (using my model):
- chip bag closer
This gives you the general structure of the handbrake.​
-stopper
This stops the chip bag closer from completely closing.​
-long balloon
This allows the chip bag closer to close again after yanking on it.​

-stick/pole

This is what you'll pull on to engage the handbrake.​
-cardboard
This is where you'll assemble everything​
-box
This is where you will mount the handbrake.​
-tape


-scissors


Procedure​

Step 1
Tape the stopper on one side on the chip bag closer.

Step 2
Tie the balloon around the chip bag closer. You might want to tape the balloon to keep it from moving around.

Step 3
Tape the rod onto one side of the chip bag closer.

Step 4
Put your current handbrake assembly aside. Tape the box onto the piece of cardboard. Inside the box, add as much weight as you can. I used clay (not shown).

Step 5
Take the handbrake and mount it onto the box. Keep in mind that you want to position it so that it will reach the DS3 controller when you pull on it.

Step 6
Create a sort of holder that will stop the DS3 from moving about when in use.

Revisions​


And you're done! Just find a place where you can put it. You might want to get some weights to hold it down.

I've been considering making a handbrake myself. I have some time in the evening that I need to occupy. If I get around to it I'll post back what I did.
 
The idea is nice but the problem is that this way the handbrake is still a button and not an analog handbrake which allows you to control the force yo apply.

Good for fun but not practical for hardcore racers :)

Can GT5 even recognize different handbrake forces? 'Cause this is what I mainly made it for. :lol:
 
I wonder if it would be possible to map the handbrake to one of the analog sticks, then use the mod and connect it to the analog stick instead, so it pulls on that? I might go ahead and try that, in which case we would have a cheap DIY analog handbrake.

Just checked it out, you can! :D

I'm going to revise the handbrake so that it will work by pulling on the analog stick.

Features in this revision:
-uses analog stick instead of "O" button to engage handbrake
-reduce the handbrake from moving side to side​

Firstly, I've added some cardboard on each side of the handbrake to reduce it's flimsyness.

Secondly, it now uses the analog stick to engage the handbrake. To do this, get a piece of string and make one loop on each end. Attach one loop to one analog stick. Remember to add something (I used tape, shown in the middle of Diagram B) to act like a wheel in a pulley. Then you need to tape the other end of the string to the end of the rod. This part is tricky, because you need to make sure that you don't overdue it as that will engage the handbrake without even pulling on it. But you don't want it too loose as you won't be able to engage it at all.

Don't forget to un-map the O button as the handbrake, and then map the right analog stick going up as the new handbrake (in GT5).

I know it doesn't look as neat, but it works!
 
The analog stick may be mapped but does it really mean that gt5 handbrake is implemented to measure analog or is the analog stick just acting as a digital switch. Can you modulate the hand brake power?

Lol, even though I applaud the craftyness of the handbrake, I believe it's been confirmed that e-brake can only be ON or OFF, so therefore this revision has not resulted in any benifit.

It does if you see it from an upgradeability point of view. If penguin would ever decide to switch to PC sim racing he could use this handbrake. PC sims do support modular handbrake axes.
