At 1 I seem to manage just fine, but if I move it up to 5 I find myself overshooting on the corners... shouldn't a higher number be more of a crutch and make the game easier?

Plus a question for the more mechanically-minded of you, when a car reaches top speed, should it keep a steady speed? I bought a '71 Ford Mustang Mach 1 and upgraded the air intake, engine and transmission and when I hit max speed my revs keep rising to 6000 then dropping to 5500, losing me a few MPH in the process. Can I stop that from happening?

Thanks.

Most of the folks in GT Planet seem to be using ABS+1 with good results, so you may want to keep it there.

As for the rev-limiter, you'll just have to ease off the throttle a little bit to keep from bouncing off of it -- though it may seem like an odd feature for a '71 Mustang to have. I guess magically giving it the limiter was easier than modeling all the metal bits exploding from underneath your car... or putting a rod through your driver's helmet. I think that would qualify the game for an MA 18+ rating.
