20 Years Since "The Great Storm"

20 Years ago today, many residents in the south east of England were waking up to destruction and chaos everywhere.

Although only a category two hurricane, the ferocity of The Great Storm is a very rare occurrence in the UK.

Everyone remembers Micheal Fish blundering on the weather that "don't worry, there is NO hurricane on the news!"

What memories to people have of this storm?

I was 7 years old, had slept right through the whole thing, and came out the next morning to find 4 trees felled in my street, flattening two cars and one roof on the way!

According to the Beaufort scale of wind intensities, the storm had sustained winds of hurricane force, although there are some who would use the term European windstorm to describe the system as the term hurricane refers to tropical cyclones originating in North Atlantic, North and Northeastern Pacific, or the Central North Pacific. The storm had winds equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

Category 2...that's like Bank Holiday in Florida; you're back to work the next day! :lol:

But if you're not prepared, it could still make quite a mess.
 
I saw the great channel 4 documentary about this, it was called 'The Storm & The Crash' which covered that horrible year in which the stock market tumbled and then the worse storm in living memory hit! The UK was indeed battered :scared:

They still show the classic clip of Michael Fish getting it horribly wrong on the weather report!

Everyone makes such a big deal of it, big woop. And as for people berating Fish, they be fools if they take the weather report for fact.
 
Um, I've just heard of this from this thread, but are you guys saying the Wikipedia article is inaccurate? I mean, it says he was talking about Hurricane Floyd over in the Caribbean.
 
It's not innacurate.

He was talking about Floyd but the way he said it led everyone to believe that he was talking about the UK.
