I saw some day 1 footage today, tough luck for Marcus Gronholm as he took a corner too fast and rolled the Ford on its side. Petter Solberg's luck is changing as he is fastest after the first day, hopefully he keeps it up and the Subaru stays reliable. Mikko Hirvonen is doing very well also after day 1.

Tough luck for Australian Chris Atkinson where a rock damaged his wheel and caused him to crash in a following corner. Xavier Pons had to retire due to engine problems.

from memory after day 1

1. Petter Solberg
2. Mikko Hirvonen
3. Sebastien Loeb

We don't get much TV coverage here currently, because of licensing problems and all that stuff. Nonetheless, we'll get 30 mins twenty-past-midnight on monday. :indiff:

Lucky me that I've signed up for WRC+, complete with live time-tables and Radio WRC.

Loeb gained the lead on the first stage today (by .7 seconds), but P. Solberg regained the lead in the second stage. (to 3.5 seconds).

Edit: P. Solberg just gained an additional 1.5 seconds to Loeb in SS10.

Edit: Loeb gained the lead with 4.8 seconds to P. Solberg after SS12.

At the end of Leg Two, Loeb now leads Solberg by 37 seconds after the Norwegian had power steering problems on the Subaru when he hit a rock.

There's a 3 minute gap to the man in third, Manfred Stohl.

After rolling on Day One, Marcus Gronholm has risen to 11th, while fellow roller Chris Atkinson is eyeing off the last driver's championship point. He sits in 10th but is only 17 seconds behind 8th place after a solid Leg Two.

Loeb increased his lead to P. Solberg with 12.6 seconds on SS15. Solberg blames his brakes, which apparently started to fail a bit into the stage. Split times reflect this, as early in the stage Solberg was slightly quicker than Loeb.

First win this year for Sebastien Loeb

Continuing their fantastic drive, the Citroen Xsara crew of Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena took their 21st World Championship victory in Leon, which was also the first for the Kronos team. It was a double celebration as the squad took the lead of both the drivers and manufacturers championships. Following in the footsteps of the reigning World Champions, Dani Sordo and Marc Marti finished just off the podium, on the Spaniard's gravel debut in a World Rally Car.

Secured in a country renowned for its beauty and party atmosphere, Sébastien's impressive victory was as invigorating as a shot of tequila. The win was achieved in three phases. On Friday Seb and Daniel swept the roads clean for the benefit of Petter Solberg amongst others, but still hung on grimly to limit the deficit to just a half a minute.

The next step was to make up the time lost, reducing the gap to a combative Solberg. It was only on Saturday night, after SS13, that Seb found any sort of breathing space. The final phase of the victory plan, which took place this morning, consisted of controlling the lead precisely. A painstaking task at which Seb and Daniel excel.

All victories taste sweet, but for Seb – sheltering under a sombrero – this one was special. « To start with, it's the first win that I have the pleasure of sharing with the Kronos team, » he said. « Also, I've won a rally that has not been kind to me in the past. Finally, it's been a win that I've had to go out and grab by the scruff of the neck. The tight battle makes this victory really worth it. Also, it's put us at the top of the championship. In other words, everything is good! »

The same joy was shared by Dani Sordo, who revelled fully in the exuberance of youth. « How do I describe it? » he commented. « Fourth place is fantastic in itself. Added to that is the satisfaction of having had a good feeling with the Xsara on gravel, setting some decent times, and having made only one mistake – a spin at the start of the rally. Also, I have the knowledge that next I am going to drive the Xsara on asphalt on my home rally – the surface on which I have most experience. So how do you think I feel! »

Understandably, emotion ran high for Marc Van Dalen, Kronos Total Citroen team principal. « I feel very proud of our team, » he said. « It's a big day for Kronos Racing. This win is the result of a complex process that started a long time ago, with the aim of reaching the top. It's also the reward for all the work we did last year, as well as during the off season, to put our plan for collaboration with Citroen into place, which trusted us and rent us perfect cars. This triumph tastes all the sweeter because it has been given to us by Sébastien and Daniel – an extraordinary duo both in the car and out of it. Now we must not rest: we have to keep working and build on our success. »

Thanks GaryR.

Though we hardly needed the line down the bottom to realise that this was a press release.

They're all the same.

Shame for Gronholm really, but that's racing. Good thing he was okay afterwards.

Solberg needs to put rock smashers on the front of his car! He is so unfortunate around rocks. Rally Japan last year was the worst though, I felt so sorry for him :(

He needs to get a win under his belt, I would be heartbroken if I kept hitting rocks like that.

I just glad Solberg was finished in second, I had a bad feeling he was going to drop out.

Corona...   Rally...  Corona + Rally = 👍 :) Wish I could see what the races were like but you guys are doing a fine job of giving some details atleast, thx!

It seems to me that this is how it is in WRC:

- Solberg/Impreza STI is best package IF he doesn't have tyre problems or other car problems

- Loeb/Xsara WRC is sure winner if he doesn't get slowed down or crashes

- Gronholm/Focus possible winner if it's not tarmac and if he doesn't make a lot of mistakes

Other than that, yea.. To me it seems like Loeb is really the best driver around. His car is just pure awesome too. Loeb just has the consistency to be a winner. Solberg can be a bit too random at times and he always seems to have tyre or car problems. Gronholm is a really good driver too, but not as consistent as Loeb.

To me looks like Loeb has the ability to bo extremely fast and race safely AT THE SAME TIME... Petter is fast, but lately (one year already) his luck isn't on his side. And Gronholm is an overall driver (very fast anyway) with a fast car and strong possibilities.

Maybe the unconventional tarmac experience Loeb has is making him faster than the usual aggressiveness of dirt drivers, i don't know... the "precision" that road racing demands is helping him beat the rest, rally is not always sideways after all

Particularly in this day and age. Loeb's style is perfectly suited to modern WRCars.

Solberg has been unlucky, yes. But I think there are two points to make: I think he has been guilty recently of overdriving the car; he may need to "slow down to go faster", that is, find a better rhythm of driving that is easier on the car. The second point is that I think the Subaru is far too fragile. For Petter to have the power steering fail after what appeared to be a minor impact is not acceptable. Even Chris Atkinson's tree incident in Sweden shouldn't have damaged the car as much as it did. You can't expect the drivers to dodge every rock and rut out there, so the car has to be strong enough to cope with a mild battering. You don't see the Ford or the Citroen having a major system like the power steering fail every time they hit a rock at the wrong angle.

But that is simply my opinion.

I agree. And he always seems to have tyre problems too (or maybe that's just me). Of course there's also the thing that Loeb almost always seems to pick the best tyres, picks harder compounds where needed and such (or so it would seem).

Gronholm is a very good driver, but he is missing that road racing precision needed for tarmac rallies (which Loeb has).

Loeb has the whole package. Reliable car and fast enough to be competitive with the other big boys (Ford, Subaru, and in earlier seasons Peugeot). He's a very consistent driver, and he can drive fast AND safely.

Anyway, I think we're in for a good battle this year. If Gronholm's Focus can keep doing really good on gravel, and Solberg doesn't have as many problems as he's had so far, we're in for some good racing. 👍

Since the BFG tires were better in Mexico, I was wondering where the Michelins are better?

BFG = Michelin by the way, they just change the label on the side.

Since last year Michelin/BFG has had an advantage pretty much everywhere. Their tarmac tyres are better (unless it's wet and then perhaps Pirelli are better), their gravel tyres are better (especially in hot, abrasive conditions like Mexico).

Pirelli are possibly better in wet, muddy conditions, but it's hard to say. The fact the only Subaru are using Pirelli makes it tough to judge. Though it was interesting to note last year (when Peugeot and Mitsubishi were also using Pirelli), Marcus Gronholm was not very happy with them.
