There was still a RS on the road, does not matter what the drive train is. If its a RS brand and its on the road. Then it was allowed in.
Iw wouldn't matter if there wasn't either an RS or an ST. WRC rules state that all that needs to be produced is a car with the same basic body shape. The old RS was based upon Group A rules, which had strichter requirements for road cars.

If you're talking about the Ford Escort then you are correct. But the Focus WRC was introduced in '99, when the WRC rules had been in effect for 2 years.

Yeah but many teams such a Mitsubishi were still running cars built under goup A rules, then Ford built the Focus Cosworth WRC a couple of years ago which was built to the proper WRC spec.

Looks great, except that the front needs a 2-3 inch drop. The wheel well looks too big, and the rears is much smaller by comparison.
They need all that room for the suspension travel on the rough tracks.

I'm going to make a real effort to go to the Rally this year. Especially as I'm probably not gonna bein college by then (unless they run it late again.)

In fact it was only Mitsubishi who were still running a Group A car in the WRC.

All the other players immediately built cars to take advantage of the WRC freedoms. So the '97 Ford Escort was a true WRC, ditto the '97 Subaru Impreza, even though both of these cars had been Group A cars in 1996.

The WRC rules enabled other manufacturers to build a competitive WRCar without the drama of having to produce a road-car version. So we saw the likes of Skoda, Hyundai, Seat, Peugeot and Citroen all produce WRCars in the late 90s.

Anyhow, to get back on topic, the new Focus looks like it will be very competitive next year (particularly with Marcus Gronholm on board). Christian Loriaux has taken his centre-of-gravity battle to new heights, or should that be depths? :)

By the way, has anyone seen where they store the spare wheel? It's amazing.
