Ok, alot has gone down over the past day with the Formula 1 commission. So we know what’s happening next year:
  • Knockout qualifying system – Qualifying will now take part in three phases. The five slowest cars will drop out after a first 15-minute session, another five will drop out after a second 15-minute session. The remaining ten cars will then compete for pole in a final 20-minute session.
  • Tyre changes are back – Use of tyres will be free with the only restriction being that drivers are restricted to 28 identical tyres for the weekend.
  • Friday drivers stay – Teams that finished outside of the top-four in the constructors championship will still be allowed to have a 3rd car during friday free practice sessions.

man those are some sweet good new rules, of course there more, how about the pitstop? will only one team member be allowed in at a time? To me i Think the Knockout thing will be a problem.

What fake action? It’s a qualifying system for heavens sake! One lap qualifying was generally considered boring to watch on TV – this system should be pretty good to watch on TV (and also much better at the track).

it seems like something the wwe or some other crappy wrestling show would have. i ilked the 2 day qualifying and the 12 lap 1 hour session was even better imo.

Knockout Qualifying: Puts more fast cars at the back of the grid. GOOD.

Tyre Changes: Puts some strategy back in, keeps all the teams competitive. GOOD.

Friday Drivers Stay: I'd say top three should be excluded.

Any final word on engine specs? What numbers are they getting from the V8s? Toyota's saying about 600+, I think.

How?

Only the bottom 6 teams are allowed to use a 3rd car/driver on friday.

Over 700BHP.

Knockout qualifying, say Jenson Button has a horrid first session gets knocked into group 3, starts from the back... or something else like that.

For three qualifying rounds are they going to be using the same fuel for all three sessions AND the race? That puts a lot of strategy into qualifying sessions. Nowadays, the teams see what they can do in practice, and then load up fuel for one qualifying run and the race. With extended qualifying, fuel load and tires become even more of a problem. Say a weaker team loads up ultra-light, they can pip a few better ones and get into the next bracket in qualifying, skip most of session two so they have some fuel left, or make it to session three and skip it, starting near the front.

Hmm... I guess it depends. I still like multi-session qualifying better than flying lap... and if qualifying is longer for the better teams, and that taxes them in terms of tires, fuel and engine condition, I'm all for it.

The single flying lap format was good for mixing up the grid (as opposed to the older format), but qualifying "battles" were fun to watch when they had them.

For the first 40 minutes fuel is free. For the last 20 minutes you put your race fuel in and you’re allowed to replace the fuel you use in that last 20 minutes (how they’ll control that I’m not sure). Tyres are free throughout the weekend, I believe.

So those in the last session should have a fuel handicap? I'm confused by that last bit myself.

Sort of, because they’ll want to have low fuel so they can set fast laps, but they can also refuel the cars to what they were at at the start of the last 20 minutes.

'cause there's no reason to keep it one-type.

Yes there is,

No tyre changes ment that drivers had to use their skill to look after the tyres, one lapse of concentration and your race could be ruined (I.E. Kimi in Europe GP).

i think it was blake who said that it's
unlike f1 to limit performance.

you end up having drivers unable to
push since they have to baby their tires
halfway through the race.

I think they shouldnt change the tyres, makes the race more interesting. Specially if a wheel flies off or something, lol. Now thats good tele 👍

The V8 rule sucks... less downforce and less power makes for "same-same" racing... now less downforce and the SAME amount of power would be fun.

I really didn't mind drivers having to "baby" their tires during races... made them all the more fun, because you had people going at every which speed...

No, I have no problem with trying to slow the cars down, they will always be trying to do that. My problem is putting a numerical value on the maximum performance of a car e.g. putting a limit on downforce, rev limiting engines etc.

Blake

there is a difference between limiting performance and redirecting it. by going to v8s they are trying to give a challenge to the teams to get performance a different way. by not allowing tyre changes they were limiting the amount of grip and speed they could maintain.

But then you could look at it the other way by saying it was challanging the tyre manufacturors to create a tyre with as much grip as possible and the durability to last fo 320kms.

Blake

i could but i wont and you cant make me!

imo changing tyres is part of racing. its fun to watch and adds extra planning. spa was fun to watch because of it. i think it was a silly rule from the get go.

now changing engines imo is just the fia trying to slow the cars down full well knowing the teams would claw a lot of power back thus helping tech development.

I respect your opinion but I think it would make the race a bit more boring since its less down to driver skill and more how tyres can act in a short period of time.

you wernt saying that last year i bet... dont you like watching them change them in the pits?

Its 4 blokes changing wheels, i could go down the local garage to see that sort of action ;) lol

Tyre changes are good, I remember in 2004 McLaren used to screw up their races during the pit stops.
