I've also heard a rumor that one of the top Audi drivers has confirmed 2008 is the last year of the R10

Not too shocking to me once I think about it, alot of modern LMP1 prototypes have lasted 3 years or less.

Marshall Pruett says that Audi knows they must build a new car to compete with Peugeot, as they are pretty much at the end of the development of the R10 and the only way to go faster is to build a new car, the R15.

Hopefully it will be a gasoline powered coupe but that is a dream of mine

Audi's Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich has openly said he likes open cars and doesn't want rules that enforce closed prototypes.

But Audi may find some sort of advantage in a coupe in development so whether the R15 will be open or closed is up in the air.
 
interesting, i remember the R8 stopped factory backing after 3 years too.

Anyone remember this rendering by Kim Stapleton done last year?

The way that car ^ is designed though, i'm sure it makes too much downforce and the ACO wont allow it. That's why more and more LMP cars have F1 style front ends.

That's interesting. I'm glad Peugot is pushing Audi. It should make for some really good racing for the next few years.

Don't expect to see this, this is just an R8 body without the F1 nose, R8 roadcar headlights, and a roof ;)
 
Well whatever car they decided to create, i hope its not a Diesel.

Diesel just takes some of the fun away. Everyone loves to hear those Engines shake the ground as they go past, its what makes Le Mans !

And now the Audi's just whizzz on quietly :(


But yes i agree with Kjb, its great tht Peugeot are pushing Audi, I dont actually know who will win this year :O
 
Audi's attitude is that they're in motorspots to further the development of road cars. It's the main reason why they don't compete in Formula One: they don't see how the technologies used in those cars can be adapted into ther current line-up. That's why they made the R10 diesel: to prove that diesel vehicles aren't all trucks, and that it genuniely is a viable alternative to petrol.

In fact, Audi have always done it. Look back at the Quattro they introduced for rallying: at the time, the ethos was that rear-wheel drive was the way to go. Audi, on the other hand, say that four wheels putting power to the ground was the better way to go, and so asked the other maunfacturers if they'd mind it if Audi fielded a four-wheel drive car. The other companies said yes, because at the time the only four-wheel dirve car Audi made was the Iltis, a 75bhp truck-like thing they had been commissioned to make by the German Army. Audi rocked up with the four-wheel drive Quattro the next year and dominated everything.

Now they're doing something similar with a diesel-powered engine: proving that devices we thought to be unwieldly aren't just practical, but can thoroughly and decisively win.

Im with you on this one. The Peugeut Diesels sound ferocious and it is the duty of the ACO and FIA to find a way to make gas engines be able to compete with the diesels. Im looking at this the same way as turbo vs no turbos.

Its better for road cars and for the sport. I wont be missing LeMans this year for sure and i know allot of people that are with me there.

i hope they stick with the diesel as well. not just for the reasons you meantioned, but, diesel is different making it interesting by default.

Dunno if this a apparent trend for future LMP cars being done in a single-seater style. Years ago, the covered models had the appearance of being able to seat two people inside, even though only the driver is seated inside.
 
I have no problems with diesels. Hopefully the diesels will force the pertol cars to be better to beat them. I know that diesels have some inherent advantages but I think that you can can a petrol car that can be competitive. Of course I could be totally wrong. :)
