...Huh. Didn't expect something like this from GM...

LLN.com
General Motors will exhibit the Opel Gran Turismo Coupe (GTC) concept at the Geneva Motor Show this week. Powered by a 300 horsepower turbocharged V6, the all-wheel-drive GTC is based on the next-generation Vectra's platform.

Given Opel's close ties to Saturn, it's safe to assume the concept will be relevant to the American brand, too.

It's not known hose closely the GTC reflects the new Vectra's design direction. It's also unclear if Opel plans to offer Vectra coupe. A two-door called the Opel Calibra was offered between 1989 and 1997, based directly on the Vectra.

...Its like they turned the current Vectra up from seven to eleven...

I like it, and it will be interesting to see what comes of it, that is, if anything does. Chances are that this is a preview of the next Vectra sedan, and I guess they are looking into giving us a coupe, which should be interesting not only for Opel and Vauxhall, but also for those of us in American with Saturn.

I like it.

I like it, except for thoes intakes under the head lights, they look out of place, they don't fit with the rest of the car.

Wow, it's got the GT-R's doors, and the G35's roofline and rear haunches...

Still, I like it, though. Just more signs that GM is finally moving in the right direction.

^Lets not get into that conversation again^

Ok then, Fix those huge intakes, and you got a sale. GM is really closing on the Japanese, I would buy that over the Accord Coupe any day. 👍

This car looks massive and heavy. Somebody said "ungainly"? Very much so. Though production versions usually do look lighter than the concept, I rarely find myself saying that a concept has the presence of a tank.

Wow. Awesome. I think those air inlets if they were moved down flush with the bottom of the lights, with tthe lining ditched and blended with the lights. They seem Citroën-esque to me. They look pretty decent from the front. The side is the only issue with the vents. The crase in the door is the real issue for me. It looks out of place and random. It also distorts an otheriwse perfect shape.

I don't think these minor inconventiences are enough to sway my opinion of the car much. It looks truely amazing.

My guess is that those huge air-inlets are just a style exercise, but if we were to remove them, my guess is that we would be getting pretty close to the next Vectra. Oh, and turn the exhaust exits down from eleven to about eight or nine, and the back should look closer to production as well.

...Given that this will have to defend itself against the new Mondeo, the next Accord, and the outrageous Camry, not everything in the car is all that surprising. I'm eager to see if Saturn will play ball with the design, as the transformation into the Aura should leave it looking similar, but somewhat different as well.

This V35/G35... uh GTR... uh new calibr........ Vectra coupe looks pretty good, I like it! (except those front vents)

I actually like the air intakes. That's taking liberties with the hood-grille-bumper interface one-step further.

I'm actually disappointed with the central grilles. If they'd tried to integrate a little more, the slash grilles integrated into the headlights would work better.

Take away all the interesting detailing (which we all know will be missing from the production version) and you've got yourself a very 'generic' looking coupe. Not ugly, but nothing special, especially without the premium badge that the similar shaped A5 or 3-Series coupe come with.

I love the Gundam-Deathscythe headlights. Whole car looks badass; I love what Opel is doing and I think Saturn is going to get more and more rings.

The upper half of the car is the next Vectra. The lower half of the car (especially the exhausts, whatchamacallits under the headlights, and L-shaped crease in the door) is concept-car experimentation that'll almost definitely be scrapped when it comes time for production.

Keep everything except the exhausts, under-headlight-intake-things, make the front brake vents a bit smaller, and it'll be a very nice car. I'm loving that interior, which doesn't look too crazy to be in production.

Compared to the outgoing Vectra, it certainly is an improvement...

But I think we Americans did one better...

The new interior seems to cross the two just a bit, combining the good looks of the American Aura interior with that of the rather practical European Vectra interior. The sheer number of buttons seems a bit overwhelming, but I think if were to contrast it against any modern Mercedes or even a Lexus or Infiniti, and you would probably find a similar amount of buttons there as well.

I'm a believer in keeping it simple, not much more required than your normal radio buttons, the HVAC dials, and maybe a few other clever things lingering about as well...

The sedan is apparently running around already...

Looks cool, at least from what you can see. There are obvious styling pieces shown on the GTC concept that appear to have made it on the prototype, particularly the lights and such. Overall though, you see the standard Opel look these days (an attractive one at that), and I kinda see a bit of the other EII-chassis Malibu in there... But only a bit.

Wow. That looks feckin' awesome. I love the air inlets below the headlights, and the exhaust outlets. The car won't work as well design-wise if they punt the exhausts.
My only concern is that bar across the grille... Either inset the badge and the badge only (aka Mercedes CL), or move the badge above the grille.

Leonidae
oh look, it has got a bangle butt!

Yeah. Kinda. Just a little bit. Which goes to show how little effort is needed to make it look great. Silly Chris Bangle, being shown up by a GM.

Afterthought: Next G6??? 👍

I think the bar doesn't look all bad, but to each his own.

This will not be a Pontiac. Pontiacs are Holdens. This will become a Saturn for the US market.

That rear-shot almost looks like a vector image.

Overall, I like it a lot, though I will agree the IS-F style swooping line on the side needs to be either toned down or deleted. I don't expect to see the rear tunnels or exhaust on the final model either (though as a VXR, that'd be sweet). I'm pro-air intakes, and will agree that if anything, the grille needs more work. The air intakes are something different, and I think they work well.

Exciting 👍

I'm guessing that the inlets under the lights are gone, or they're unimportant judging by the fact that they look covered in the prototype. It also looks like that line on the door is gone, but I'm not sure. Anybody see a more standard exhaust on that below the body? Anybody see the exhaust at all? That would indicate if they have kept the concept's style. From what I can see, it looks gone, but I'm not sure.

Afterthought: Next G6??? 👍

That is an interesting question that doesn't have a very clear answer. Current GM standards call for a G6 update in the not too distant future, probably around 2009, but that is where things get a little fuzzy. The Chevrolet Malibu is the first of the American Epsilon models to get the chassis upgrade to where the new European models are at. The Saturn Aura will likely get an update once these new Opel/Vauxhall models hit the streets, but even then, that isn't an absolute possibility.

...But the G6 is a different story. Rumors continue to fly around in Detroit that there is a new RWD platform in the works, basically a smaller version of the Zeta platform under the G8, and reportedly it will be placed under the next G6. That would mean that GM would technically have its first "true" 3-series competitor in terms of size, and the way rumors have been suggesting this, it appears that it has been GM's plan to have Pontiac be the "Costco" version of BMW.

Along those same lines, they have also been suggesting that the G5 would be moved up as the coupe version of the G6, both as RWD models, leaving the Cobalt/Volt and the Astra to deal with the small-car sales.

I'm not really a fan of the grille area. The intakes under the lights I kinda like, but the grille seems overly large and ugly. On the whole though, its a nice looking concept.

Slicks

I retract my statement. I couldn't see the front quarter view before, only the side-ish view. It looks fine.
