Hot on the heels of its 2007 World Rally Championship triumph, Ford has serious plans to get back into the hyperhatch market alongside the Subaru WRX STI with an all-new Focus RS in 2009.

Yes, 2009, not 2008. Ford will show a finished concept Focus RS at this year's London Motor Show in July, but the production version of the Blue Oval's new road rocket will not be launched until the London Motor Show in 2009. The company says its design department is just too busy getting all its other new cars - the slick new Fiesta, Kuga and Ka - sorted to have the time this year to get the RS ready.

But, while Martin Smith's design team is sharpening its crayons, the engineering team, led by Ford Team RS boss and ex Paris-Dakar racer, Jost Capitos, will be hard at work deciding on the car's final specification. First indications are that the car will have two-wheel drive and produce at least 280bhp, but don't take those as gospel yet.

The news that it will be front-wheel and not four-wheel-drive will disappoint rally fans wanting a clone of the Championship-winning car, but Ford is certain that once we have seen and driven the car, few will be upset. It says it has rejected the all-wheel-drive set-up as it adds cost and weight, plus it is working on a super sexy semi-active limited-slip diff that it reckons will not struggle to get the power down.

How much power those front wheels will have to handle is still unclear. While initial rumours suggest 280bhp is the magic number, that would put the car at a significant disadvantage to the Subaru and Evo rally weapons, each of which have around 300bhp to play with. Even allowing for the Japanese cars' power-sapping four-wheel drive, a 20bhp deficit could leave the new RS eating dust.

The other key reason for expecting more than 280bhp from the turbocharged five-cylinder engine is Ford Team RS's project Blufin. Set up to capture some of the lucrative aftermarket tuning business for the Focus and Fiesta ST, the dealer-fit engine and chassis tune-up kits, produced for Ford by tuning ace Roush Engineering under the Mountune name, will boost the standard Focus ST's 225bhp in steps all the way to as high as 260bhp.

So there's no way that the full-blown RS is only going to make 20bhp more than a warmed-up standard Focus ST. 300bhp then? That sounds much more like it.



Helping traction and handling will be some very special 19-inch wheels plus a completely reworked suspension system - new dampers, springs, anti-roll bars - that lower the car to improve aerodynamic downforce and sucker it down onto the road. The brakes will also be significantly upgraded for sure.

While the company claims that the final design has yet to be signed off, the first teaser picture of the car released at the WRC celebration dinner last December shows that it's going to be a very long way from modestly styled. It might not have the rally car's four-wheel drive, but it'll have plenty of the mud-slinger's styling cues.

The deep front airdam will be complemented by some muscular wheelarches and a rally-style rear wing to give the car some serious visual attitude. Expect none of it to be there for show. The whale-tailed Escort RS Cosworth was the only production car to generate positive downforce when it was built in 1992 and the new car builds on everything that car started.

And it's not just the exterior that gets new clothes. The interior will be swathed in a unique RS trim that, initial reports suggest, will mix proper rally style functionality without compromising comfort on the most important rally stage of all - the one to and from the office in the morning.

But as valve-bouncingly exciting as the rest of the car sounds, it's the price of the Focus RS that could be the real shocker. In the same way that the ST has captured the lion's share of the hot hatch market in the UK through its addictive low price/high performance mix, the RS is expected to undercut the opposition significantly.

Figures as low as £21,000 have been mentioned but expect something nearer £23,000 by the time the car hits the dealerships in mid 2009.

At that price it could kill the competition before it even turns a wheel, so expect the new Focus RS to sell out fast. And start talking nicely to your insurance agent now.

I love the old Escort rally car style bonnet vents.... the whole thing looks wicked! :crazy:

The interior is a bit odd though.. its like they are trying too hard and it looks messy!

I'd buy one, that thing is awesome! Although I think Americans would have a hard time shelling out that kind of money for a Focus.
 
They'd do it for a 300HP Focus. I want AWD, though...

Scrap the lower end Mustangs and just offer the GT500.
 
This thing looks amazing. The only thing I don't like is the tails, but then again, I hate pretty much all tail lights on pillars.
 
Front wheel drive? I think I'll pass. I don't know how well the Mazdaspeed3 and Caliber SRT-4 handle with that kind of pwoer at the fronts, but it sounds like it will be more of just a handful and not as fun to drive with that kind of understeer. Maybe they'll think of some way to handle the power, but I'm pretty skeptical of this car beating out one of the AWD twins.

Looks? It looks amazing. That is a very mean looking exterior. It looks like nobody car design some parts of an interior for themselves any more. I think I've seen that gauge cluster in probably half the new cars that have debuted in the last year.
 
No no no no NO NO NO NOOOOOO! not again! FORD, get your act together! don't take cues from TRD Aurion or whatever thingamajic aussies have there with over 300bhp and FWD! that is the wrong way to go! Just steal the haldex from Volvo and use that with this new, powerful hot hatch that you believe to be an Evo/STi fighter.. which it isn't. with cars like this, it's just plain stupid to start cutting corners.. No matter how fancy differential it has ( stolen from MS3 without a doubt), FWD is FWD and there's only so much you can do with it. :ouch: :grumpy: :yuck: :guilty: :indiff: 👎 :irked: 🤬
 
ABSO-LUTELY.

Its one sexy ride, and I have complete confidence in its performance based on previous well-sorted cars from Ford. A damn shame we won't see it in the US, really, but we can all hold our breath a bit longer for the MKIII car in the not-too-distant future.
 
I hope they dont carry over DT like alloys as they weigh a ton and I dont think 300hp in FWD will be too much of a issue if the chassis is well sorted. Loads of people have GTI ED30's and Leon Cupras remapped to over 300bhp and I havent heard any real complaints of the handling being adversely effected. Now putting the power down on the road in the rain is complete different subject.

Should see a good focus RS with a rumoured more powerful leon cupra. Both cars are really popular in the UK and I dont think this RS will be any different.
 
Believe me, it will handle. I've driven a pimped ST, and it can shovel. Sure, you're a touch traction limited in first and second, but real world performance leaves a Mustang wanting all over the board. Third gear overtaking is incredible with over 300lbfts, and turn in and lateral grip is excellent. Leaves a Mustang GT for dead. The standard ST is a little flat... but the RS will have fixed that. This car will be quick.

And I'm not the biggest Ford fan, so this is saying something. :)
 
And by "Mustang GT" you are obviously referring to the 1999-2004 260BHP version because the new/current gen will walk it (this RS). The '05-'08 GT's with the 5spd gets to 60mph in less than 5 seconds AND HANDLES WELL DESPITE ITS LIVE AXLE--I doubt this Focus RS will get within a half second of that assuming it has any sort of traction in first gear.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about how "horrible" and "incompitent" the new GT is--because it just simply isn't. There was an episode of TopGear where they (wrongly) pitted a Mustang GT (2005-2007) against an Exige--and yes the Exige is a track car by design but the Mustang wasn't that far behind it in the end (despite the Mustang costing less than half of the Lotus). About a second's worth? I doubt the RS could hang that well with the Exige. Don't get me wrong I really like this RS--but I'm also irritated at your comparison / bash of the Mustang GT. Its not slow and its not inept in the handling department--a 300bhp 320lb.ft. power rating may not seem like much but it delivers the power very well. Remember, they do race these Mustangs around circuits people.

I wouldn't be completely sure of that either. Sure, the GT isn't going to win any awards for handling prowess, but its no slouch either. Proper components and tires, as always, will make the car handle just fine.

That being said, the now-defunct Cobalt SS Supercharged easily outrun the GT when they were doing hotlaps at VIR last year. I'd suspect that the Focus RS would do it easily as well, given the clear power advantage in that arena.

They are clearly different cars, and personally speaking, I'd still have the Mustang over the Focus. Its that attitude and exhaust note that make the difference.

Go to the Focus vs the STI/Evolution? I'd likely choose the Ford. Well, only if the R32 isn't included...
 
Well, when you get to modifying... the Mustang will go quicker. But handling, this Focus will have the live-assed Mustang licked. Sure you can give the Mustang more grip if you want, but it will never flow like the Focus.

But yes, they are very different tools.

JCE, it's not a bash... you've got to remember we have different roads over here. Every road has lots of camber and every roundabout is a conundrum that live-axle cars struggle with. I going to have a hoot piloting the Mercury around. The Mustang is a fine vehicle, but not value-for-money over here - it would cost me more to source a Mustang GT than it would to buy this Focus RS.

However, I'm fairly certain that over a variety of road conditions, road types, normal driving, circuit racing, autotesting, high speed cruising... the RS will have the edge on the Mustang. If the Mustang is $5,000 cheaper over there, then I wouldn't be fussed. Since I know someone with a Mustang GT (an '06, I think) I'm going to ask to have a play and compare it back-to-back with my friend's tuned Focus ST.

And, um, I'd have the Focus over a GT. But I'm not the biggest fanboy of either. I want that Camaro. :)
 
I like that car but it does seem a bit like it's trying too much style wise, though I'm a big Focus fan so that probably wouldn't put me off. And yes, it will handle, Focus' handle very well, as for being traction limited, my 1.6 spins it's tyre's very easilly in 1st and 2nd if your not careful. I've jsut recently got it back from the garage, I've been driving a crappy courtesy car for that past couple of weeks and boy what a difference there is between a good car and an average-poor one when you step from one to another and back again.

Becareful when you drive the GT if it's a manual. You just might fall in love with it. :lol: If its an auto don't count on it being nearly as fast as the manual--infact its easily ¾ - 1s slower than the manual. I'll accept your statement about the cornering to a point. I just don't want the GT getting an undeserved review. :sly: Oh and remember to enter corners slightly wide in the GT when you drive it or you'll encounter some odd understeer at the apex leading to massive oversteer on the exit. While fun (and it is), it isn't very "technical" and doesn't feel as fast as doing it with more precision (which is also fun).

Given the fact the mkI RS was consistently, comfortably faster around tracks than the WRX, I think this new one running more power ought to at least compare.

And while I too am disappointed that we won't be seeing an AWD version... why all the whining about the Volvo's setup? It's not like it's a proper AWD system anyways; it's nose-led until there's slip. Having that particular drivetrain wouldn't do it any favours against the Subarishis, it would just add weight.

Yet another car we need over on this side of the pond, pronto. I'm excited 👍
 
They had me really interested, right up to the point it said "no AWD", then they completely lost me. Sorry but if they are even gonna come close to selling me the very nice looking Focus, either add in full time AWD or forget it.
I'd even take that fugly Imprezza STI wagonback or that nice looking Lancer EVO over a FWD.
I don't care or the sorry excuse of weight and cost either.
Way to not get it Ford.
 
Let me put it this way:

Audi wasn't concerned about weight.

I wasn't just excited about this car's prospects as a road car, but also as a Group N rally car, something that is desperately needed out there. There's too many Evos, STIs, and 15-year-old Celicas. If Ford would throw their hat in, we'd be a bit more interesting.

(On an off-note, Something from VW or Audi needs to get into WRC and/or Group N, too.)

I'd like to see a Rally version R32, although it would make the regular R32 pointless if it wanted to compete with the EVO/STI. Maybe the Ibiza would be a better choice.
 
The problem with the R32 is that it's V6 is too big for most rally championships. I think the upper limit for Group N is 2.5L nowadays. I could be wrong, though. The Ibiza wouldn't be bad, but with SEAT seemingly focused on touring cars, and Skoda's program having gone bust, VW or Audi might be the better Choices.

But, enough offtopic...the RS is front drive and chasing cars with AWD, which kinda lessens the car's rally image.

That is what kills the car for me. It would make a great hot hatch but when they say it is going up against the EVO and STi, I just don't think it has the "rallyness" to compare. A great boy racer, but not a rally car.

The only chance this Focus would have of matching the new rally sedans is that if Ford pulls off something similar to the Civic RR.
 
If it would be 4WD I would of like it a lot more... FF is no no for me. I will never in my life get a FF car
