F1: 2009 French Grand Prix Cancelled
Written by: SPEED Staff / GMM

Paris, France

The French motorsports federation has announced that it will not promote the race in 2009 due to financial difficulties.

"For reasons related to the financial situation, the Federation Francaise du Sport Automobile (FFSA) has decided to cancel the Grand Prix of France," said the entity in a statement.

"The FFSA would like to thank all customers who attended the Grand Prix of France and have supported this international event in recent years."

The French race was on the calendar announced earlier this month by the FIA for the 2009 season. The decision leaves the 2009 calendar with 17 races after the Canadian Grand Prix was also absent from the schedule.

🤬 the FIA and their ridiculous santioning fees!

I'm not as pissed off (or as surprised) that there won't be a race at Magny Cours, the races there have usually been boring.

French Grand Prix cancelled for 2009
15 October 2008

The French Motorsports federation has cancelled the Formula 1 race at Magny-Cours for next season. The FFSA announced on Wednesday evening that due to financial problems it could not organize the French Grand Prix in 2009.

Having the Canadian Grand Prix dropped from the 2009 calendar and now the French Grand Prix there are just 17 races left on next season's calendar.

In a statement the French automobile federation announced that due to the financial situation it has decided to cancel the French Grand Prix and they thanked all customers who attended the French Grand Prix in recent years.

Can't say as if I'm too broken up about it. It is Magny-Cours, after all. The Red Bulletin put it best when describing the 2007 event: "the circuit is near a small town called Nevers, which, when pronounced correctly, tells you when everyone wants to come back".

Roll on the new circuit for 2010, then ...

Gah, you beat me to the punch by an hour! How did I miss this thread?

I say they move the next French GP to Le Mans!

now i would watch that 👍

but i really do hope they fill this empty slot. i mean im sure they could put the canadian GP here or even with another european event. i mean they got unused tracks they could put there with all these new tracks taking place of the old.

That certainly sucks. Way to go FIA, you just shot yourself in the foot TWICE!!!!! :grumpy:👎
Not that I loved Magny Cours or anything, but the track does have something special that no other track has......

An audience that is falling asleep?
Well maybe other than that, the course is located on the countryside pretty much like Autopolis. Provides such a different surrounding than any other races IMO. Also, you got to remember that Michael Schumacher holds the record for most wins on a single Grand Prix circuit on this very track...... :p

Bad news for french fans. I wonder if a reserve track gets put into the season now?

Have you ever watched a race on the Bugatti circuit? - it's as dull as dish water. You'll be begging for them to take it back to Magny Cours.

The lap time wouldn't be long enough on Bugatti, full circuit FTW!

i think he was talking about the full 24 hours of le mans circuit not just the main race circuit.

When will people understand that the FIA does not care whether a race is boring or not? The FIA does not cancel races because they are boring, because you and every other Formula One fan keep tuning in to the race year after year after year, no matter what. The FIA cancels and creates races strictly for financial and political reasons; but mind you the FIA will make any other excuse like "pit lane not long enough", or "buildings are too small" or any other arbitrary reason.

If the race promoters make too many concessions (Read: profits before paying out to Bernie) against the FIA's wishes, and there's promoters out there with more money to offer Bernie Eccelstone, then one race gets canceled and another shows up. And once you lose a race, good luck getting it back without an ironclad contract and an army of lawyers.

The FIA will never hold an F1 race at the Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans. The last time a circuit over 5 miles was used in Grand Prix racing was 1980. An 8-mile circuit is not practical for safety cars, driver and fan safety, and of course, preventing paying fans from bringing in video cameras.

The FIA held a race at Le Mans, but it was at the Bugatti au Mans circuit in 1967; when safety was a whispered four-letter word by everyone except Jackie Stewart. Formula One possibly had a chance to race on circuits like that 40 years ago, and they've almost all disappeared since. So what makes you neophytes think an F1 race will be held on such a circuit nowadays?

I wouldn't like to see F1 at La Sarthe. Not for technical or safety reasons, but because La Sarthe is used for the 24 H of Le Mans (cars and bikes) and it should stay that way.

It's as processional as the Valencia GP was. Normally only used for MotoGP isn't it?

*Psssst... here's a hint. F1 is boring!*

Le Mans isn't the only other circuit in France ya know....theres also Paul Ricard, but then again thats now considered "just a test track".

I'd say it can improve in a few areas, but I wouldn't say it is boring. The last few seasons since Schumi retired have seen a leap in competitiveness. Next years changes could make it even better, but we'll have to see on that one.

the only thing i remember from college biology was that my teacher told us NEVER to say the word NEVER. because there is always something that could happen even if its proven wrong time and time again there is always that posiblity that in an off chance it could happen.

but i think we all agree the FIA wont hold a race at le sarthe we where just commenting that it would be a great race to wach and it would be nice if they did take it there.

and as for the video camera thing the FIA already has trouble keeping people from bringing in video cameras. just check youtube.

Okay, it will not happen.

The video camera comment is what we call "car-sasm"...
