Mitsubishi has revealed its revamped 2009 Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder. The Eclipse GT is powered by a 3.8L V6 that generates 265hp and 262 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed manual or Sportronic 5-speed gearbox. Click here for first picture in gallery. - TechEBlog

The back end looks kind of nice.. The front says "I want to be like him... The GTR. ^.^"

Holy crap! Could they copy the GTR any more blatantly?
Otherwise it looks cool.

I'm glad they fixed the rear end, though while I think the front is also an improvement, it is a bit too close to the GTR.

Do the words, "Familial Resemblance" mean anything to you?

It's really too bad: I looks even more like the 2G, now, but it's still the same fat, unhappy sports coupe...

I suppose. You know I thought of that too. Which came first, the Evo or the GTR? They do have a very similar front grille. Then again, it's also very similar to Audi, which somehow always manages to be pretty gross looking.

It may have been intended to show resemblance to the Evo, but due to the way the front end of the Eclipse is shaped, putting the Evo front end on it makes it look very GT-R-like.
Besides:

My first thought was Evolution when I saw it, but yes, they all have the GT-R "mustache" now.

My only suggestion?

Sell me one with the 250-ish BHP turbocharged I4 and AWD from the Lancer Ralliart!

acutally it looks alot like itself...
eclipseralliart05_01.jpg

the front end is almost identical to the ralliart version, note i said almost. i don't care if it looks like another car, i still think it looks cool.

did i mention that the ralliart has 400 horsepower, is 4 wheel drive, turbo charged, and has a 5 point racing harness/rollcage?

Turn down the "X-treme" knob, slap a $30K sticker on it, and make it streetable and it would make a lot of sense as a middle-alternative to the Lancer Ralliart and Lancer Evolution GS-R.

The old one has lost a little of it's cool, but I think this one has gained it back. Yes, please!

The generation before this wasn't very cool either. Like I said, It hasn't been "cool" since they dropped AWD and the Turbo I4.

I think this is still my favorite eclipse:

I don't think it's really been the same since. Maybe this new one might eclipse it, but I think not.

The new *cough* Eclispe is as bloated and hideous as ever. The best looking Eclipse was actually the 1st gen Eagle Talon TSi AWD as seen here:

With the exit of the GSX Eclipse in 1998 (?) the Eclispe has been completely rubbish. No AWD means its WRONG WHEEL DRIVE.

My primary concern with the previous Eclipse is that it could have been better with a rear-wheel drive package. Or knowing Mitsubishi's rally heritage, 4WD would have also been good. The car (to me) looked like its own sports car. FWD doesn't usually spell "sports car." Now that I've seen the front and back pictures... I'm sorry, people... I just don't really like the "mustache" under the grill making it look taller than it really is. I'd paint over that with the color of the car instantly. I don't usually go crazy over black-colored cars like most other people. However, I do think the car looks more aggressive. The previous Eclipse had a lip spoiler while this newer one has a taller spoiler. This is a VERY sporty car lookswise. I still think it needs at the most, 4WD to really shine since I don't think Mitsu would go for RWD here.

As far as the "could they have blatanly ripped off the GT-R?" comments go, maybe this GT-R influenced the latest "fashion trend" in car design. The current trend has been taller grills on cars. If not taller grills, then mostly tall grills broken up by some sort of crossbar. It isn't exactly one very tall grill, just a grill broken up by a very dark gray or light black crossbar. I don't necessarily like that design with these recent cars, but it does provide that illusion of a front grill that's taller than it actually is. Black, in this case, provides an illusion. It's kind of like how black tights make a woman's legs seem slimmer. I like to think of these trends in car design as fashion trends because if one designer comes up with something hot, there are sure to be plenty of knockoffs across the board from different designers. I actually follow women's fashion trends outside of talking cars and sports, so I know what I'm talking about here.

I know the criticism about yellow-colored cars. UV Blue was a beautiful blue color for the Eclipse. I would have prefered UV Blue or that red pearl color for this prototype. Otherwise, I like this car to the tune of an approval rating of 95%. Just remove the "mustache" below the grill and think about maybe a RWD or 4WD drivetrain, and I'll go 100%. By the way, I have no problem with black on the rear bumper because it doesn't look very bad from the rear. I'd love to see the Ralliart Eclipse be sold in America. May happen either later this year or in a few years. This would be the ultimate Eclipse.

Looks like common trends in the auto industry to me...
This Eclipse totally says Evo cousin. Although it looks like the GTR to some extent, it really doesn't look any more like a GTR than an Evo.
That said, I totally love that rally Eclipse posted further down the page. 👍 Awesome looks and great performance I'm sure.

All that aside, I've never heard a single good thing about the Eclipses of old in terms of mechanical reliability. :ouch: (

Last thought...
My dad brought home an '08 Eclipse with 5,000 miles (rental). Had a great seat, interior wasn't bad, engine/ breaks were responsive, and the looks weren't bad either. My chief concern would be reliability but other than that I liked the car. Hopefully the same can all be said for this new model (without the concerns for reliability).

Wow, quite the improvement I say. I'd still wish it got an AWD version though.

It still has a gigantic ass.

I'm not really sure if I like it or not, it does look better then the previous couple of years though.

Oh and the headlamps remind of the Jaguar XKR.

Those "Altezza" or "Euro"...or whatever they're called...rear lights really gotta go. That fad got old just as soon as it came out.

Ehhh...wasn't the Eclipse there before the GT-R?

Apart from the black square gril on the front, what's so GT-R about it? I reckon the GT-R and Lancer EVO X got their inspiration from the grill from Audi...

Anyway, I like it a lot, I liked the previous Eclipse as well, they just made it better 👍

That's the eclipse I got to test drive the other day.
Wasn't all that bad. Certainly wouldn't be my first pick for cars of similar price and concept but overall I liked many things about the car.
As I said before, I really hope they just improve on a few areas and leave the rest alone.

It's still kind of fat and unhappy, but for the guys who miss the 2G Turbo AWD, they'll send you over to the guy who sells Lancer Evos.

It's still far too heavy and powering the wrong wheels for it's price-point. The Z is fairly close by, as is the Mustang.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Eclipse really serves a purpose as a standalone model in the Mitsubishi lineup anymore. With the Evo as the halo model, it can't tread too close, so I don't see 4WD making it back anytime soon. Perhaps the most logical way to go is to just base the next one on the Evo chassis and sell a coupe-ified Evo as an Eclipse. The nostalgic turbo-4WD lovers would get what they want.

I can agree with the FWD deal. Make the car wider, more powerful, longer... pretty much call it a supercar. I can even attest from playing Gran Turismo 4- I almost WANT this to be a 4WD car rather than a FWD car. Mitsubishi's claim to fame has been their rally racing success. So why not add to that with the Eclipse? I think Mitsubishi COULD do RWD with this car, but I don't think they will. This is a sports car to me rather than a plain jane "grocery getter." Its looks are vindicative of that. This is probably the raciest-looking FWD car since the 1999+ Toyota Celica before its days were numbered and became the Scion tC. I just think you can't continue to have this Eclipse as a FWD the way it looks and with the amount of horsepower this thing makes. The best news from Mitsubishi in regards to this car is to make it 4WD and maybe change up the chassis to better accomodate and utilize the 4WD capabilities. I don't think FWD is really cutting it in regards to what kind of capabilities and design this car has.

I have thought of one extreme possibility that I KNOW will not happen: they could change it into a mid-engined car and make it RWD. It would be the most affordable midship car other than the Lotus models. Either way, this car looks too sporty and too wide to be FWD. "Big ass" car or not, this car needs a drivetrain change and some other stuff to look and perform better than it should. And I'm sure all or most of us can attest to that. Something like the Ralliart Eclipse (not necessarily the 400hp engine and carbon trim) would suffice for a base model Eclipse.

I just had an Idea...Add 4WD...but make the V6 more powerful. (DI, TT) What do you get?
