I don't know the science behind it, but we humans just love watching race crashes. I have enjoyed this bizarre habit from young age and since I am a video editor I compiled what I felt were the best crashes of the year. All major race series' are included. Enjoy.

I'm not sure what it is, seeing thousands of pounds of a equipment destruct in an instant. Watching seemingly solid and rigid structures deform and fall apart in an instant, the dust kicked up and bits and pieces flying everywhere, the exhilarating nature of just how dangerous it is.

There is something I find intrinsically fascinating about race car crashes, a fascination that is immediately lost when you consider that there is a person stuck right in the middle of it.

Yeah I'm the same. The main thing is that nowadays not many race accidents are fatal or cause serious injury so we can subconsciously let that bring us some inner peace as we watch the cars plough into each other in all sorts of ways :)

The safety in motorsport is simply incredible these days, it's actually quit amazing to watch the total annihilation of a car, as the driver remains perfectly unharmed.

The amount of times I have watched Robert Kubica's crash at montreal and Jari-Matti Latvala's crash in the Portuguese rally nearly 1 hundred times in total, I am still amazed watching them how the drivers escaped completely unharmed.

ah, on the op's video, pretty awesome production! I really like how it flows with the music... even if I don't like the music, heh

That flying Seat was indredible...

Haha wow, just last night I was tearing Youtube apart looking for some crash videos. I came across one I particularly liked, let me just find it

Ok found it

Thanks! That's exactly what I was going for anyway - keeping the video in sync with the music. It adds a lot to whatever you are watching when both go together.

In before someone posts Belgium 1998 :p

I find it very interesting watching crashes and picking apart the physics of it all and working out what caused it. Of course, its also quite a dramatic and spectacular part of motorsport, but as we always have to add, not the be all and end all of motor racing.

Dessy, love your work, Mate! When Algusari's (spelling?) wheels came off in practice at china, he must have stained the bottom of his suit!

also watched the 2008 reveiw, and it, also, was awsome. I have fond memories of that season asi it was my first season of f1

I can't believe you guys enjoy watching crashes. Are you all closet NASCAR fans?

I'll admit there have been some spectacular crashes in which the drivers walked away unscathed, but I don't think I can honestly say I enjoyed watching it happen. That's just morbid.

Cheers, thanks for the kind words. I was thinking of doing one for the 2010 season since I have footage from every race and almost every qualifying plus whatever features happened pre and post show. The only issue is that the footage will have lap numbers and positions so it won't look as clean :/

It's human nature to want to see people put themselves in harms way, even the ancient Romans liked it, that is what the coliseum was built for after all(granted the specifics were different but the basic concept was the same). The risk is also what makes it exciting, if you need an example, a trycicle race will never draw 100,000 fans to a track and a few million more over TV because frankly there is very little risk involved.

Also, I'm very open about my NASCAR liking(I also enjoy F1, WRC and most other things with 4 wheels and an engine).

Edit: Oh yeah, great video!!!!👍

No 2010 compilation is complete without this one. It was a bit late in the year to make the cut for yours though Dessy. I know it has been posted around here once or twice, but still relevant.

Two things about that op vid:

1. For being the "Aaron's Lucky Dog" car, that NASCAR isn't so lucky, seeing as it's involved in at least 1 major accident every year.

2. LOTS of Formula and Indy car flips. Crashes like that could get someone seriously injured or killed despite all the safety technology. I can see why it's a major concern and why a lot of those divisions are starting to take precautions and look at preventing it, like reducing the speed of the cars.

Here's another 2010 crash that was missing from the OP's video:

It was Sebastien Buemi, not Alguersuari.

Morbid? No one died, so how can it be morbid? No one has posted a fatal accident and no one here is saying they enjoy watching fatal accidents. Its actually the fact no one died which makes it all the more interesting to me at least, especially with accidents like the one in this post.

Why does enjoying crashes mean we are NASCAR fans? Have you not seen BTCC? WRC? GP2? There are several series that feature more crashing than NASCAR does. No we are not necessarily NASCAR fans...we are fans of dramatic demonstrations of physics.

From that angle, it looks like he ran over raikkonen.
