New Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The Most Sporting Road-Going 911

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is sending the new 911 GT3 RS to the starting line: Delivering even more engine power, offering lower weight, and featuring shorter transmission ratios as well as body and suspension elements upgraded to an even higher standard, the new 911 GT3 RS sets the foundation for homologating the racing version of the 911 GT3 and therefore offers everything it takes for ongoing success on the race track, continuing the series of absolutely uncompromising, sporting 911s homologated for the road.

The heart of the new 911 GT3 RS, the power unit, is based on the engine already featured in the 911 GT3. Like the latter, the RS power unit now displaces 3.8 instead of 3.6 litres, delivering even more power and revving up even faster and more dynamically.

The engine featured in the new 911 GT3 RS delivers 15 bhp more than its counterpart in the 911 GT3, that is maximum output of 450 horsepower from the fast-revving naturally-aspirated power unit. This means specific output of more than 118 bhp per litre from the six-cylinder, an extremely high figure for natural-aspiration technology even in the strictest worldwide comparison. And unlike many other high-performance engines, the power unit in the new 911 GT3 RS remains fully suitable for everyday use.

The new 911 GT3 RS comes exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox optimised for short gearshift travel, low weight and high efficiency. To enhance the level of performance throughout the entire range of engine and road speed, the gears come with a shorter transmission ratio than on the 911 GT3, deliberately making concessions in terms of even higher top speed.

To further improve its sporting behaviour, the new 911 GT3 RS comes for the first time with a purpose-built and specially set up PASM suspension, with wider track not only at the rear, but also on the front axle. Accordingly, the body of the new 911 GT3 RS is wider not only at the rear, but also at the front through the use of additional wheel arch covers.

The front axle comes with nine-inch-wide wheels running on 245/35 ZR 19 sports tyres, the rear axle features twelve-inch-wide wheels incorporating 325/30 ZR 19 sports tyres.

The dynamic engine mounts featured as standard also serve to improve the car's driving dynamics to an even higher level. Depending on driving conditions, the mounts change in their stiffness and damping effect, improving the connection between the engine and the body when driving under very dynamic conditions.

As yet a further point the car's aerodynamics develop even more downforce than on the GT3, again benefiting the qualities of the car on the race track. Racing qualities are also why Porsche is introducing another new option in 2010, a lithium-ion battery delivered with the car and, replacing the conventional lead battery, reducing weight by more than 10 kg or 22 lb.

The new 911 GT3 RS shows its close connection to motorsport also through the dynamic looks of the car borne out in particular by its low ride height, the new, extra-large carbon-fibre rear wing with its specifically designed wing supports made of aluminium, the characteristic dual tailpipes on the extra-light titanium sports exhaust, as well as special front and rear parts exclusive to this model.

Sales of the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS are starting in Germany in January 2010. The Euro base-price is Euro 122,400.- without value-added tax and national specifications. In the U.S. the 2010 911 GT3 RS goes on sale in early spring of 2010 and will be priced at $132,800.

Lithium Ion battery: Epic win. Ultra-light. Possibility of bursting into flames instead of merely bubbling up under high heat.

But seriously, what a nice car!

+: nice crisp video, awesomely quick car (it's in High Def on Youtube)
-: soundtrack and howling tires cover up the sound of the engine. Pretty pathetic launch... director probably didn't want to waste any hard disk space trying to "get it right".

Looks the goods 👍
Pity the great soundtrack over shadowed the sweet tone of the 3.8.

At 1.19, a shot of the tail light, with brakes applied looks awesome ...is this new?

Very cool product, not much different from previous model but still have a superior quality compared to most of the competition.

I agree with other member, it will be very bad if we dont have porsche in GT5.

I quite like the sticker job on that thing. A definite improvement over the last car.

I still think I'll have a 911 Turbo when I buy my Porsche, but this would be tempting as a track car...

Amazing car even if that wing does make it look a bit ricer.

It's not rice if it's functional...

My money no object dream car (well, maybe a Zonda R with unlimited funds).

Having driven a gen 1 GT3, I can only imagine how good the gen 2 GT3RS must be... I'll take mine in white without graphics please... like a junior GT3 Cup car.

Complete awsomeness.

Marvelous. Absolutely marvelous. Despite all the trouble that Porsche may or may not be in, this shows that they are still, unquestionably, the people to go to when you want to get a serious sports car done.

But, is this my favorite Porsche? No. I love the car, but if I'm spending my own cash, I'd be overly joyous with a "standard" Carrera S.

But if I'm not spending my money? I'll take a GT3RS in yellow with the black stickers, please.

Sorry guys but you can only have the car in black, white or blue. And the stickers are only Guards Red or White Gold. And of the available combinations, I think black/red is the only one that looks decent. Maybe white/red.

Argh! My dreams killed in front of me!

Throwback color schemes never seem to stick with those who made them famous.

Weirdly...

Rice: (no downforce advantage)

Though decklid spoilers sometimes help fuel economy by smoothing out a car's wake, your usual minimalist spoiler does nothing but obscure your rear view and produce no downforce.

Not Rice: (actually works)

Of course, the spoiler has to be properly reinforced, otherwise all you're doing iis buckling your trunk for no good reason, and if you have no front splitter, it's definitely rice...

Beautiful spoiler. See how they mounted it to the frame and not just the surface panels? I like how they made it just high enough to clear the wash from the roof, without making it too tall.

Another video, with engine sound: (from WorldCarFans)

Sounds rorty and hard-edged... :D ...I think (if I actually had the money) I'd buy this for the sound alone!

Beautiful car! But I wouldn't exactly call that Civic's spoiler Rice, as this is more rice, you can't exactly call OEM Rice, its just a accessory

Rice:

completly not functional, nor nice to look at!

Wow...:ill:

That same spoiler that is on that Nissan could easily be rice on other cars like those Accords that are all beat up but have that big wing. It all depends on the application.

And I think a 911 GT3 RS is about as far from rice as you get...

*Still would rather have a GT-R. Puts on Fireproof Clothing*

But this is the Porsche I'd most like to have...at least, of this generation. All things considered, I'd rather a 964 or 993 Turbo, despite both being slower and harder to drive.

Also...the graphics this generation have gone WAAAY over the top. I think I'll check the "Delete" option on that.

Its weird that green or orange does not come into play with the new gt3 rs, because i would definetely buy a green one with black decals.

Maybe on the ruf version...

CHANGE OF MIND: I just saw the Gold graphics version...much better, especially on a Black car...:3

They wont, unless we get more ruf. but it would be nice to pwn everyone with a nicely upgraded rs spyder.

Rice is usually defined as "non-functional ornamentation."

Most OEM spoilers are "rice". They're designed to have absolutely no aerodynamic effect, at all.

The new 911 GT3 RS might just be the most potent track car ever built for the street by Porsche, but that doesn't mean it's the first. The RS line goes all the way back to 1973 with the 911 2.7 RS when Porsche first combined an extra boost of power with the benefits of reduced weight. The original RS had impressive numbers for 1973: 210 horsepower, 0-60 mph in five and a half seconds, and a top speed of 152 mph.

The RS line continued through the 964, 993 and 996 model years, all the way to today's second generation 997 model introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. The 2010 911 GT3 RS might have significantly more performance than the 1973 911 RS - 450 horsepower, 0-60 mph in 4.0 seconds and a top speed of 193 mph, to be exact - but the inspiration remains the same as the original.

Porsche of UK has created a video highlighting both past and present RS models, featuring the 1973 911 RS and the 996 and 997 911 GT3 RS models on track. Needless to say, there's a lot of oversteer involved, and it's an informative and entertaining seven and a half minutes.

:D

Next weeks episode of Fifth Gear should be good :)

Fifth Gear - S17E05 - 1st July, 2010

(...)Elsewhere this week, Jason takes the phenomenal Porsche 911 GT3 RS for a spin. The £100,000 vehicle is a stripped-down, minimalist affair – but what this supercar lacks in frills, it makes up for in power. Track trimmings such as a roll cage and flame-retardant furnishings come as standard. The road-legal GT3 RS promises a top speed of 193mph, but how far can Jason push it?
